There is no single price for hosting a 24/7 YouTube stream on an Indian VPS. Your monthly bill depends on the VPS plan, the transfer allowance for its India region, any bandwidth overage, and GST on your actual invoice. At YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, a continuous 30-day stream sends about 3.24 TB of video payload before overhead—so a low advertised VPS price alone does not tell you whether the setup will fit your budget.
Estimate the bandwidth cost first
A VPS uploads one feed to YouTube. YouTube handles delivery to viewers, so you do not multiply the VPS upload by the audience size. The key cost input is the encoder’s outgoing bitrate.
YouTube bitrate examples
YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval. These recommendations are from YouTube’s current help guidance, accessed in 2026; the page does not show a publication year. YouTube Live encoder settings.

These estimates use decimal terabytes and the calculation bitrate × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8,000,000 megabits per decimal terabyte. They are arithmetic estimates of payload, not provider-measured or invoice totals. Allow extra for protocol overhead, reconnects and other server traffic.

Convert your own bitrate
For a 30-day month, multiply bitrate in megabits per second by 0.324 to estimate decimal terabytes of payload. For example, 8 Mbps × 0.324 is about 2.59 TB. This assumes the bitrate remains constant and the stream runs for all 30 days.
What published Indian VPS prices do—and do not—tell you
AWS Lightsail
AWS Lightsail’s published Linux bundles start at $5 per month. Its general pricing table lists 1 TB of transfer for that tier and 3 TB for the $12 tier. AWS says Mumbai-region transfer allowances are half the amounts displayed in the bundles. That makes the displayed entry-level allowance inadequate evidence that a continuous 1080p30 stream fits: its estimated payload alone is about 3.24 TB per 30 days, before overhead. Check the current quota for the exact region and plan, and the applicable outbound overage rate before estimating a bill. AWS Lightsail pricing.
Contabo
Contabo publishes India-region VPS options with product-specific resources and transfer or traffic terms. Its pricing page shows US-dollar prices with a 24-month term; it does not establish a GST-inclusive INR checkout total for your streaming workload. Compare the specific product’s traffic terms and billing commitment rather than treating a headline price as a monthly all-in cost. Contabo VPS pricing.
How to build a realistic monthly estimate
- Set the stream format. Choose resolution, frame rate and codec, then use YouTube’s relevant bitrate recommendation as your starting point. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends RTMPS for a secure connection. YouTube encoder guidance.
- Estimate 30-day transfer. Multiply bitrate in Mbps by 0.324 for an idealized decimal-TB payload estimate. Increase the estimate to allow for protocol overhead, reconnects and any other outbound server use.
- Check the region-specific quota. Match the allowance to the actual VPS region, not just the provider’s general pricing table. For AWS Mumbai, AWS says bundled transfer allowances are half the displayed amounts. Check current overage charges as well. AWS Lightsail pricing and regional allowance note.
- Add the provider’s actual overage and base charges. Confirm currency, billing term, whether the allowance is outbound transfer, and how excess usage is billed. A plan can have enough transfer yet still be unsuitable if the server lacks CPU capacity for real-time encoding or the network route to YouTube ingestion is unreliable.
- Apply the tax shown on your invoice or checkout. Do not assume every provider uses the same tax treatment or that a listed price includes GST.
A useful comparison should include monthly base price, India-region transfer quota, overage rate, CPU/RAM/storage for encoding, network route to YouTube ingestion, monitoring and restart arrangements, billing term, and invoice/tax treatment.

How GST affects an Indian VPS bill
AWS India says GST applies to cloud services AWS India sells to customers in India. Its tax guidance describes 9% CGST plus 9% SGST for customers located in Delhi, and 18% IGST for customers elsewhere in India. This is AWS’s explanation, not a universal rule for every hosting provider or customer account. For your estimate, use the tax and taxable amount shown by the provider at checkout or on the invoice. If you need an input-tax-credit or compliance determination, confirm it with a qualified tax professional; a published VPS price is not a tax-inclusive quote for your account.

Check the streaming setup, not just the data allowance
YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, CBR, and up to 60 fps in its encoder guidance. Its developer guide requires a valid ingestion endpoint and application path, the correct protocol, and port 443 for RTMPS. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Confirm that the VPS can encode your chosen video in real time, if it is doing the encoding. An adequate transfer quota does not guarantee adequate CPU capacity.
- Use the correct YouTube ingestion endpoint and stream key, and keep the key private.
- Test the encoder settings and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A server can have sufficient bandwidth on paper but still suffer from an unstable route or a missing restart/monitoring plan.
The cited guidance establishes recommended settings and connection requirements; it does not establish that any particular VPS plan will perform reliably for your workload. Test the actual configuration before relying on it for an uninterrupted channel.
