Enabling software encoding may be exposing a CPU bottleneck, but “dropped frames” alone does not prove that x264 is the cause. In OBS, open View → Stats while the problem is happening and identify whether Dropped Frames (Network), Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag), or Missed Frames (Rendering Lag) is increasing. Each counter points to a different part of the stream path and calls for a different fix.

First identify which frames are being lost

Before changing encoder or VM settings, reproduce the problem and record the OBS Stats counters, encoder and preset, CPU use, configured bitrate, and when the counter starts rising. Save the OBS log from that session. If the problem appears only after a long run, record the elapsed time; that timing is useful evidence, but is not a diagnosis.

  • Dropped Frames (Network): OBS says this means the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Investigate the connection between the VM and YouTube ingest.
  • Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag): The encoder is not keeping pace with the configured output. Software encoding can make CPU capacity relevant, but confirm the counter and workload before concluding that the VM needs an upgrade.
  • Missed Frames (Rendering Lag): OBS is struggling to composite or render the scene. This is a rendering-resource issue, distinct from network loss and encoding lag.

OBS documents these as separate troubleshooting categories in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance. A counter that remains flat while another rises is a reason to focus on the latter, not to change every setting at once.

Fix network-dropped frames

If the network counter rises, assess the VM-to-ingest path and whether it can continuously deliver the configured bitrate. A brief speed test or a provider’s headline network capacity does not establish sustained performance to YouTube’s ingest server.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check upload capacity: OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not as a guarantee. Test from the VM and leave headroom for variation. OBS’s explanation and heuristic are in its network troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Check the route and software: Review VPNs, security or network-prioritization software, network drivers, routing, and provider-side issues. If YouTube or OBS offers another suitable ingest/server option, compare it using the same stream settings.
  3. Consider supported OBS mitigations carefully: On supported Windows builds, OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing. Dynamic bitrate can reduce the bitrate when the connection falters, but that may reduce picture quality and does not repair the underlying connection.
  4. Change one factor, then compare: Keep a note of the counter and stream-health messages before and after each adjustment. Otherwise, it is difficult to tell whether a change addressed the network path or merely coincided with a temporary improvement.

An Indian VM location alone does not reveal its route, sustained throughput, or loss to YouTube ingest. The provider, region, instance type, and measured path are needed before attributing network drops to a particular service or recommending a particular VM.

Fix encoding lag after enabling software encoding

If Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag) rises, reduce the work required to encode or verify that the VM has more usable CPU capacity. OBS notes that frame rate affects encoding performance as well as rendering performance in its encoding performance guidance.

  1. Lower output resolution: Test a lower output resolution while keeping the other settings unchanged, then compare encoding-lag counters and the resulting picture.
  2. Lower frame rate if needed: If 60 fps is not keeping pace, OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps. This reduces workload but also makes motion less smooth.
  3. Simplify the scene: Remove or reduce high-resolution media, expensive filters, and browser sources where possible. Use the same representative scene for each comparison.
  4. Review the VM’s actual capacity: Check what CPU resources the guest can use and whether CPU contention or quota limits are present. If the target quality still overloads software encoding, verify that the current VM can provide more CPU capacity or exposes an appropriate hardware encoder before considering a change.

No VM provider, SKU, operating system, OBS version, encoder preset, or CPU measurements are specified here, so there is no evidence-based instance size or x264 preset to prescribe. A generic GPU upgrade is not a reliable answer: virtualized and headless environments differ in which rendering and hardware-encoding resources they expose to the guest.

Fix rendering lag separately

If Missed Frames (Rendering Lag) rises, investigate OBS’s scene composition and available rendering resources instead of treating the problem as a bitrate or x264 issue. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes, and scene complexity and sources contribute to that workload.

Verify YouTube Live output settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, specifies RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 input codecs, with a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum. Select settings that both meet the platform’s requirements and can be sustained by the VM’s actual CPU and network path.

H.264 input format YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 or 720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s codec- and format-specific settings, not measurements of this VM’s upload capacity. In particular, 17 Mbps is YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p60, not proof that an Indian cloud VM can deliver it continuously. YouTube also says it transcodes live input to produce output formats for different devices and networks. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test for a sustained stream, not just a clean start

YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health and platform messages. A static scene or short idle test may miss a workload or connection problem that appears in the actual broadcast.

  1. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, scenes, and audio for the test.
  2. Watch OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream health during the run; note which counter changes and when.
  3. For a 24/7 use case, test for a representative extended period. A short successful session cannot establish 24/7 stability.
  4. Save the log and record the VM type, operating system, OBS version, encoder and preset, CPU use, and network measurements alongside the outcome.

Without those case details and a sustained representative test, it is not possible to conclude whether this VM can reliably stream 24/7 or identify one definitive root cause.

Common symptoms and next checks

What you observe What to check next First adjustment to test
Network-dropped frames climb VM upload capacity, route and loss to ingest, VPN/security/network software, and available ingest choices Test a bitrate the connection can sustain; compare the stream path or a suitable ingest option
Encoding-lag skipped frames climb CPU capacity and contention, encoder and preset, resolution, frame rate, and media/filter workload Lower output resolution; if needed, try 30 fps and simplify sources
Rendering-lag missed frames climb Scene complexity and GPU/rendering resources exposed to the guest Simplify the scene and verify the VM’s actual rendering capability
Stream starts cleanly but degrades later When counters begin rising, sustained resource availability, and network conditions over time Capture a log and run a representative extended test before changing capacity

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos without maintaining your own OBS VM, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
