Short answer: YouTube’s documentation does not establish a general RTMP session cap that automatically disconnects a continuous stream. Its “under 12 hours” rule concerns automatic archiving, not a 12-hour broadcast limit. If your stream stops at a repeatable time, check the encoder or relay’s output-duration settings, the YouTube stream configuration, connection protocol, and stream-health messages.
Does YouTube disconnect a live stream after 12 hours?
Not according to the official YouTube encoder guidance. YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That describes which streams are automatically archived; it does not say that a stream is forcibly terminated at 12 hours. The help page does not establish a general maximum duration for a continuous RTMP broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup and archiving guidance
Keep the archive question separate from the connection question. The fact that an under-12-hour stream is automatically archived does not explain why a particular encoder reports that its output reached a time limit. That wording may refer to a setting or limit in the encoder, a relay, a scheduled event, or another part of the setup; without the product name and exact error, the cause cannot be identified.
Find where the time limit is coming from
First establish whether the stream ends after the same elapsed time on repeated attempts, and which component reports the limit. Note the elapsed time, save the encoder log, and capture the YouTube Live Control Room stream-health status. These details help separate a local output timer from a connection failure or a destination-side issue. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents stream status and health information, but it does not provide a universal error-to-fix mapping for this symptom. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams
#1 Best Overall
- 【Hardware H.265/H.264 Encoding at 1080P60】Dedicated hardware encoder delivers broadcast-quality 1080P60 streams with H.265/H.264 compression. Reduces bandwidth usage by up to 50% compared to legacy H.264-only solutions, while maintaining crisp, crystal-clear video output.
- 【Broad Protocol Support for IP Distribution】 Supports SRT, RTMP(S), RTSP, UDP, HTTP, HLS, WebRTC, TRTC, Icecast and SHOUTcast — integrate seamlessly with CDNs, surveillance NVRs, IPTV systems and browser-based monitoring dashboards. One device replaces multiple single-purpose streaming boxes.
- 【Browser-Based Setup in Minutes】 Set up in minutes through any browser — no software, drivers or OS compatibility issues. DHCP is enabled by default to prevent IP address conflicts on your network. Note: basic networking knowledge (IP address, RTSP/RTMP configuration) is recommended for advanced streaming setups.
- 【Compact Design with Flexible Deployment】Palm-sized form factor (approx. 90×54×29mm) fits easily behind monitors, on shelves, or in equipment racks. Low power consumption ensures reliable 24/7 operation for live events, remote monitoring, and digital signage.
- 【Professional Audio & OSD Overlay + 1-Year Warranty】 Supports HDMI embedded audio plus external 3.5mm input. Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
- Encoder message or timer: Look for maximum output duration, scheduled stop, or session-duration settings in the encoder. The precise location and label vary by product.
- Relay or hosted service: Check its output-duration setting, reconnect behavior, plan eligibility, and logs. A relay can introduce its own session limits independently of YouTube.
- YouTube event or stream state: Check the event’s status and the stream-health message in Live Control Room. Record whether the encoder is still attempting to send after YouTube stops receiving the stream.
Verify the YouTube output configuration
- Confirm the selected YouTube stream. In the encoder’s streaming settings, verify that the chosen stream is the intended YouTube event or stream.
- Check the server URL and stream key separately. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a Live server URL and a stream key. Make sure each field contains the value for the intended stream; do not swap them or reuse a key from a different setup without confirming it is the right one. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Confirm the connection protocol. If using YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint, check that the encoder uses an
rtmpsURL and the documented server and path, port 443, TLS, and SNI hostname information. Google notes that an RTMP library can time out if it makes a cleartext RTMP connection to a YouTube server expecting RTMPS. Follow the endpoint details for your setup in Google’s RTMPS delivery guide, updated 2026-09-14.
Read stream health without mistaking it for a timer diagnosis
YouTube’s stream-health information can flag delivery or quality issues, including low video bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio. Review the health status around the time output stops and compare it with the encoder log. These issues can affect delivery or quality, but the API documentation does not say that they explain every time-limit disconnection. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams
- If health warnings begin before the disconnect, address the specific warning and then retest.
- If health is normal but the encoder reports a duration limit, investigate the encoder’s timer or the relay’s session configuration.
- If the encoder log shows a connection timeout, verify RTMP versus RTMPS and the endpoint details before changing unrelated video settings.
If a relay provides disconnect protection
A relay’s fallback feature can preserve some continuity during a source interruption, but it does not necessarily fix the cause of the interruption. Restream documents disconnect-protection windows of 5, 15, or 30 minutes, eligibility on paid plans, and termination of destination streams if the source does not reconnect before the selected window ends. That feature is a bounded fallback, not proof of a YouTube RTMP duration limit or a cure for one. Restream: Set up stream disconnect protection

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Before relying on a relay, check where its duration is configured, how long fallback runs, whether your plan includes it, and what happens when the source fails to reconnect. Use it for interruption continuity only if its behavior fits your needs; continue diagnosing the original output limit separately.
