If your YouTube 24/7 stream stopped after a cloud VM maintenance reboot, first confirm the VM’s state and reboot event, then check whether the encoder restarted and what YouTube Live Control Room reports. Only reconnect or change settings after checking the current ingest URL and stream key. The title does not identify your cloud provider, operating system, encoder, or YouTube error, so the steps below separate general checks from Google Cloud-specific guidance. An operator being in India does not by itself establish an India-wide network problem.
Recover the stream in order

Check the VM’s state and event history
In your cloud provider’s console, check whether the VM is running, stopped, or still recovering. Review instance events and reboot logs around the time the stream dropped. Establish whether the event was provider-initiated, user-initiated, or triggered from inside the guest OS before changing encoder or YouTube settings.
If you use Google Compute Engine, its reboot troubleshooting guidance distinguishes system events from user or service-account actions and recommends reviewing log details such as the method and principal. A reboot initiated inside the guest OS might not have a comparable Cloud Audit Logs method. See Google Cloud’s reboot troubleshooting guidance. For another provider, use that provider’s event and log views instead.

Check the encoder on the VM
If the VM is reachable, confirm that the encoder application or configured service is running rather than exited or stuck. If it is not running, restart it using the procedure appropriate to that encoder and operating system. Then inspect its output or logs for connection, authentication, ingest URL, and encoding errors. There is no safe universal service name or restart command when the software and OS are unknown.

Verify the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and the settings for the relevant stream. Check the configured stream URL and key against the values entered in the encoder. YouTube notes that previously used stream settings may load an earlier key; if a key was reset or rejected, copy the current key from the Stream tab and update the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it in logs or screenshots. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Read the timestamped Live Control Room health message
Wait for the preview and health state to update, then use the timestamped error message to guide the next check. Do not assume that a reboot caused a format problem or that a format problem caused the reboot. For example, YouTube’s guidance for an “Incorrect stream format” error calls for H.264 video and AAC audio; apply that fix only if the reported error supports it. See YouTube’s stream error guidance.

Check outbound network and ingestion if the VM and encoder look healthy
Confirm the VM can reach the internet, that the encoder is using the intended YouTube ingest server, and that the key is current. YouTube’s general guidance recommends available upload capacity roughly 20% above the stream’s total bitrate. This is general guidance, not an India-specific threshold or evidence that your incident was caused by connectivity. Review YouTube’s streaming network tips.

Confirm the viewer-facing result
Check both Live Control Room and the public watch page. A viewer’s playback issue alone does not prove that the encoder stopped. Likewise, seeing the encoder reconnect does not prove the same live event or its archive continued without interruption. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to start a feed; they do not promise that an arbitrary outage will resume the same event seamlessly.

Tell a VM reboot apart from an encoder or YouTube problem
These are separate failure points. Use the VM event history, encoder output, and Live Control Room status together; do not assign a root cause until the evidence supports it.
- VM stopped, recovering, or unreachable: investigate the provider event and instance logs before troubleshooting YouTube.
- VM restarted, encoder did not: the likely operational gap is that the encoder is not configured to start after OS boot.
- Encoder restarted but cannot connect: check its logged error, ingest URL, current key, and any reported encoding issue.
- VM and encoder appear healthy, but no feed reaches YouTube: investigate outbound access and ingestion using the encoder logs and Live Control Room health state.
- Viewers report playback trouble while the encoder remains active: check the watch page and Live Control Room before concluding that the encoder disconnected.
If the VM is on Google Cloud
Google Compute Engine behavior is an example, not a diagnosis for an unnamed provider. Google says most supported Compute Engine instances are set to live migrate during host maintenance. For those instances, migration is intended to keep the VM running with minimal disruption; Google describes typical disruption as much less than one second. Some configurations do not support live migration or are configured to stop, and may stop and optionally restart instead. Check the VM’s host maintenance policy, including its maintenance and restart behavior, against Google Cloud’s host maintenance documentation.

For a Google Cloud incident, the reboot troubleshooting guide documents compute.instances.automaticRestart events that can follow a host error or a terminateOnHostMaintenance event when automatic restart is enabled. It also describes other causes and guest-initiated events. Persistent Disk and Hyperdisk data persist through instance restarts under the documented host-event guidance. Do not apply these details to a different provider without checking its own documentation.
Prevent another interruption
Make encoder startup part of VM recovery
Configure the encoder to launch after OS boot using a service or process manager suited to the specific software and operating system. Then test the behavior with a planned restart: confirm the VM returns, the encoder starts, and YouTube receives a feed. A VM restarting successfully is not enough if its streaming process remains stopped.

Test failover before relying on it
If you have a backup encoder arrangement, test it while you can observe the result. YouTube’s streaming tips suggest stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable for the test, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. See YouTube’s streaming tips. A working backup should be judged by the actual viewer experience, not merely by a second encoder starting.
Keep a separate recording when archive preservation matters
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive backup. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a 24/7 broadcast should not rely on YouTube to preserve one complete archive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Consider whether the VM remains the right operating model
For future planning, compare keeping an encoder on your VM with a tested backup arrangement or a managed hosted-streaming service. Evaluate recovery after a VM restart, whether the public event and its chat or archive remain continuous, independence from the primary VM, monitoring effort, and verified service terms. A hosted service should not be treated as an immediate fix for a VM reboot unless it is confirmed to address that specific failure path.
