Yes, you can play Indian regional music on a 24/7 YouTube livestream only if you have the rights needed for the specific songs and recordings, the intended live and replay uses, and the territories you serve. Owning an audio file, having a YouTube channel, or holding a licence for a different use does not by itself establish those rights. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party matches and may interrupt them; its terms require providers to have the necessary rights for use on Google services worldwide.
What rights may be involved in a regional song?
A song title is not a rights clearance. A music track can involve separate rights in the underlying musical work and in the particular sound recording. India’s official IP India copyright explanation identifies musical works and sound recordings as distinct protected categories, and describes potential rights holders or contributors including lyricists, composers, singers, musicians, and sound-recording producers.
That distinction matters whether the track is a bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani, Hindi song, or music in another Indian language. A permission from one participant or for one recording does not necessarily cover the other rights in the work, a different recording, or all intended uses. Remixes, live-performance versions, compilations, and alternate recordings need to be checked as the exact material you plan to play.

What YouTube requires for live music
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights to exploit the live content on Google services “throughout the world.” The terms specifically include music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers—including public performance licences—and other royalty participants. Check each permission’s territory against that worldwide requirement; a permission limited to India may not cover the use contemplated by the terms.

YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If the system identifies a match that is not resolved, YouTube may issue a warning, replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it. A licence does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube advises licensed creators to ask the relevant rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist, and warns that a stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted.
Clear the music before starting a continuous channel
- Inventory the exact material. List every track and the exact recording or version you intend to use. Record relevant information about labels, remixes, live recordings, compilations, and transitions; a song title alone is not an ownership record.
- Identify the rights holders or authorized representatives. Check both the musical work and sound recording, and account for relevant performer rights. The IP India explanation describes possible roles, but does not identify who owns any particular track. Ask the rights holders or their authorized representatives to confirm their authority over the rights they grant.
- Get the scope in writing. Ask for permission that expressly covers YouTube livestreaming, any replay or archive, applicable territories, monetization if planned, and the intended duration. Read the actual grant: a local venue or public-performance permission should not be assumed to cover a global online livestream, an archive, or monetized use.
- Request Content ID allowlisting. Before going live, ask the relevant owner to allowlist your YouTube channel if their content is managed through Content ID. Keep the written licence and the owner’s allowlist confirmation together.
- Test and monitor the planned stream. Start with cleared material and watch YouTube Studio for warnings or interruptions. A licence does not automatically override YouTube’s matching process; if a warning appears, identify the matched material and address it rather than assuming the permission will resolve the platform action.
- Plan replays separately. Confirm that your permission covers any replay you want to retain. Keep a local recording if a replay is important: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube replay.
How claims, takedowns, and strikes differ
A Content ID claim, a copyright removal request, and a copyright strike are not interchangeable. YouTube’s general copyright guidance distinguishes claims from removal requests and strikes; a claim is not itself YouTube’s ruling that you own—or do not own—the work. YouTube says it does not resolve ownership disputes, so dispute a claim only when you have a substantiated rights basis and follow the process YouTube reports for that specific action.
YouTube’s account guidance says copyright strikes on active or archived livestreams may disable live access. Three strikes make a channel subject to termination. Treat a live warning or interruption seriously, and identify whether YouTube reports a claim, a removal request, or a strike before choosing a response.
Indian copyright context and limits
IP India describes copyright as including rights such as reproduction and communication to the public, and distinguishes musical works, films, and sound recordings. That framework helps explain why permission for one layer or one recording should not be presumed to clear every use. It does not determine whether a particular contract grants the rights needed for a specific livestream, archive, worldwide audience, or monetization plan.

YouTube’s general copyright guidance says rules and exceptions differ by country. Its fair-use discussion is US-specific; do not treat it as an explanation of Indian fair dealing. Nor should you assume that a local licence, Creative Commons label, public-domain claim, or YouTube music resource guarantees that a stream will avoid claims or strikes. For a track-specific question, check the relevant contract and consult the rights holder or qualified Indian copyright counsel.

StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos around the clock: upload the cleared recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Cloud playback means nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots. StreamNeo does not provide music rights or prevent Content ID matches, claims, or interruptions, so clear the material and arrange any needed allowlisting first. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
