A useful WISMO response does more than report a tracking status: it explains what that status means, what happens next, and who will take action if the answer is incomplete. WISMO means “Where is my order?”—a customer question about an order’s status, location, or delivery timing. A practical handler should return the best-supported status it can, then assign unresolved work to a responsible team or role.
What a WISMO handler needs to answer
Customers may ask “How far away is my delivery?”, “Is my order delayed?”, or simply “What’s the status of my order?” They are often asking more than where a parcel was last scanned. They want to know whether it is safe, when it is likely to arrive, and whether they need to do anything. WISMOlabs frames the question as “Where is my order—and what happens next?” WISMOlabs.
A handler should use current order and carrier information where available, but it should not turn an uncertain scan into a promise. When the available information does not answer the customer’s real question, someone needs to own the investigation and follow-up.

Use a four-part response
This is a practical response framework, not a published industry standard. It separates the customer-facing answer from the operational work required to resolve an exception.

- Status: State the best-supported position of the order or shipment in plain language. Include a tracking link when it helps the customer verify progress.
- Meaning: Explain what a carrier event or exception tells you—and what it does not. For example, “in transit” confirms movement in the carrier’s system, but by itself may not establish an arrival date.
- Next step: Say what the customer should expect next, whether they need to act, or when you expect to have more information. Avoid promising a delivery time that the data cannot support.
- Owner: If the issue needs investigation, identify the responsible team or role, the action it will take, and what update the customer can expect.

Separate routine tracking from work that needs an owner
Routine status questions can often be handled with current order and carrier data, a clear expectation, and a tracking link. Exceptions require a path to someone who can investigate rather than another copy of the same scan.

Make ownership visible in the reply
When an issue is unresolved, tell the customer that it has been routed, what the owner will check, and when or how they will hear back. Avoid saying only “we’re looking into it.” A concrete handoff helps distinguish an active investigation from a status message that leaves the customer to chase the same answer again.

- Name the next action, such as checking a warehouse handoff or contacting the carrier.
- Assign the work to a team or role that can perform that action.
- Keep support responsible for customer-facing follow-up if another team owns the investigation.
- Set a follow-up expectation the business can meet; do not invent a delivery date or resolution deadline.

Choose tools for the ownership gap, not just the tracking page
Available approaches include package-tracking apps, automated notifications, chatbots, CRM systems, and broader post-purchase platforms. When assessing a tool or workflow, check whether it supports:
- Coverage of the carriers and order data your business actually uses.
- Clear, fresh tracking information that can be translated into customer-readable language.
- Customer self-service for routine status questions.
- Enough context for a handler to understand the order and prior interactions.
- Exception routing to a responsible team or system.
- Integrations with commerce and support tools, plus a manageable setup and maintenance burden.
- Evidence for any claimed reduction in contacts, rather than an unverified performance claim.
Do not choose a platform solely because it displays scans. If exceptions still have no owner, the tool may make the status easier to see without resolving the customer’s unanswered question.
What the available figures can—and cannot—show
The cited sources include consumer figures attributed to external reports and vendor performance claims, but their original samples and methods are not established here. Treat those numbers as attributed claims rather than independently verified or universally applicable findings. The operational case for ownership does not depend on a single WISMO statistic: a status answers where the system thinks a shipment is, while ownership determines who acts when that is not enough.
