Better website animation does not mean adding more movement. It means giving each effect a clear job, choosing a rendering approach suited to that job, checking how it performs in real browsers, and preserving a clear experience for people who prefer reduced motion.
Start with what the motion needs to communicate
Before choosing a duration or writing CSS, decide what a visitor should understand because something moved. Useful interface motion can provide feedback after an action, establish hierarchy, show continuity between states, or indicate progress. If an effect does none of those things, remove it; MDN’s practical advice is to “cut down on all unnecessary animations.” MDN’s CSS performance guidance also makes clear that unnecessary animation has a processing cost.
Keep the choreography restrained. A button response should confirm interaction rather than compete with the page; a disclosure should make the change of state legible; a progress animation should help orient the visitor. There is no universally correct duration, easing curve, or number of effects. Choose based on the interface and confirm that motion adds information rather than simply activity.
Choose properties with rendering work in mind
Animation cost depends partly on what changes and how much of the page is affected. A change to width, height, top, or left can require layout recalculation (often called reflow) and repaint. A large animated region or many affected elements can increase the work. By contrast, transform and opacity are often preferable for movement and fading because they can avoid repeated layout work. Filters can also be appropriate in some cases, but their cost depends on the effect and the browser.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, animating an element’s width to reveal it changes geometry. A different design might keep its dimensions fixed and animate a transform or opacity instead. That alternative may reduce layout work, but it can change the visual result and is not automatically faster on every device. Do not treat any property as a guarantee of GPU acceleration or smoothness: profile the actual effect in the browsers and devices you support. MDN’s performance guidance and its comparison of CSS and JavaScript animation explain the rendering considerations.
Pick an animation mechanism that fits the interaction
| Approach | Good fit | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| CSS transitions or keyframes | Common DOM state changes, such as a button response, menu, or disclosure | Often the clearest way to express a straightforward effect. CSS is not inherently faster in every case; measure the result. |
requestAnimationFrame() |
Custom JavaScript logic that needs to update frame by frame | The browser schedules its callback before repaint. Prefer it to an arbitrary setTimeout() or setInterval() loop for animation. |
| Web Animations API | JavaScript needs to control effects that resemble CSS animations | Useful when script needs control over animation playback; choose it when that control justifies the additional logic. |
| CSS scroll-driven animations | Progress tied to scroll position or an element’s visibility | Use a fallback and verify support in target browsers; availability in Chrome does not establish support across every browser. |
CSS is a sensible default for a simple state change, not a universal performance rule. MDN notes that CSS and JavaScript animation can perform nearly the same in some cases, recommends CSS where practical, and recognizes JavaScript for more complex effects. For custom frame-by-frame work, requestAnimationFrame() provides a browser-aligned callback; MDN describes it as “an efficient way to make animations in JavaScript.” Read MDN’s explanation of CSS and JavaScript animation performance.

Use scroll timelines when scroll position is the timeline
A conventional JavaScript scroll handler can run on the main thread asynchronously relative to scrolling, which can make an effect vulnerable to jank. CSS Scroll Timelines and View Timelines offer a declarative alternative: one links animation progress to scroll position, while the other links it to an element’s visibility in a scroll container. Chrome for Developers documents these APIs and notes availability starting with Chrome 115; that milestone is not a current support matrix for all browsers. Check Chrome’s scroll-driven animation guide, test the browsers you target, and ensure the page remains understandable when the effect is unavailable.
Respect reduced-motion preferences without hiding meaning
The prefers-reduced-motion: reduce media feature lets a site detect that a visitor’s operating system is configured to minimize motion. Use it to remove or replace nonessential movement, especially effects involving large or pronounced motion. An interaction’s result must still be clear: for example, a menu should remain visibly open or closed even if its entrance animation is removed. Reduced motion is not a reason to suppress every effect regardless of function; preserve essential state or information in a less disruptive form. See MDN’s prefers-reduced-motion reference and its guidance on accessibility media queries.

Example: replace a nonessential scaling effect
This pattern keeps the normal state change while replacing a pronounced scale effect with a subtler opacity transition for visitors who request reduced motion:
.panel {
opacity: 0;
transform: scale(0.96);
transition: opacity 180ms ease, transform 180ms ease;
}
.panel.is-open {
opacity: 1;
transform: scale(1);
}
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) {
.panel {
transform: none;
transition: opacity 120ms linear;
}
}
Adapt the selectors and states to your component, and check that its content and open/closed state are still apparent without the scale movement.

Profile the effect instead of assuming it is smooth
- Reproduce the interaction on representative hardware. Include a mobile or lower-powered device as well as desktop; an effect that feels smooth on a development machine may behave differently elsewhere.
- Inspect browser performance tooling. Look for layout, paint, compositing, long scripting work, and dropped frames while the animation runs.
- Change one major factor at a time. Try a different property, reduce the animated area, reduce the number of elements, or change the animation mechanism. This helps identify what is driving the work.
- Retest accessibility and fallback paths. Enable reduced motion and test browsers where a scroll-driven effect may not be available. Confirm that the same information and state remain clear.
Use the result of those checks—not a blanket claim that CSS, JavaScript, or a particular property is always faster—to decide whether the effect belongs in the interface.
