When a test passes once and then reliably fails with “no suitable record found,” ask: “Did this test eat it?” Oleksandr Riaboshtanov uses that question in his September 22, 2026 DEV Community article to distinguish a test that consumes or alters its own data from one that passes and fails without a pattern. It is a useful diagnostic distinction, not a formal universal definition of flakiness.

What a repeatable second-run failure can tell you

A test may pass on its first run because the required record or state exists. The test then deletes, consumes, changes, or outlives that resource. On the next run, its precondition no longer holds, so failure is predictable rather than intermittent. Riaboshtanov describes three data-related patterns: an irreversible action consumes a target, an uncleared configuration change persists, or a record ages out of an index.

That differs from a failure that passes and fails without a clear pattern—for example, because of a race or timing window. The distinction is a way to investigate symptoms, not proof that rules out other causes.

Triage the failure signature

Use the same spec repeatedly, then compare what happens on the next run. Treat each pattern as a clue, not a validated classifier.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Observed pattern Possible explanation Suggested response
Second run cannot find a candidate The first run consumed the data. Create fresh data per run or select a new target each time.
Second run fails its precondition The first run left a state change behind. Undo the change in teardown and verify the undo.
The test passes after waiting An index, cache, or queue may expose the change eventually. Poll for the desired condition instead of relying on a fixed sleep.
It passes alone but fails in parallel Workers may be taking the same shared object. Lock per resource or give workers separate resources.

Choose data ownership to match the side effect

Create and clean up test-owned data

Riaboshtanov recommends this as the default: have the test create the data it needs, then remove it in teardown. This makes ownership and cleanup explicit, though it is not suitable when the product does not let the test reverse an action.

Borrow and restore existing data

If a test must use existing data, record its prior state and restore it through the same API that changed it. Do not treat a teardown call as proof of recovery: verify that the resource is actually back in the required state.

Borrow and rotate when an action is irreversible

Some actions have no reverse control. In that case, do not pin every run to the same target. Select a fresh target for each run and document why the test does not restore the previous one, along with the mitigation.

Check repeatability and eventual consistency

As a low-cost acceptance check, Riaboshtanov suggests running a Playwright spec twice:

npx playwright test tests/your.spec.ts --repeat-each=2

The intended check is whether the spec survives its own second run. This is the author’s recommendation; the command was not independently verified against current Playwright documentation.

If the failure disappears after a delay, the resource may not yet be visible in an index, cache, or queue. Replace a fixed sleep with polling that waits for the actual condition, with a sensible timeout and a useful failure message. A fixed delay can be both wasteful when the condition arrives quickly and insufficient when it arrives slowly.

Separate shared-resource races from data consumption

A test that succeeds alone but fails only when workers run concurrently may be contending for a shared object. If multiple workers can select the same record, one may consume or alter it before another uses it. A lock scoped to that resource can serialize access; alternatively, allocate distinct data to each worker. The right choice depends on whether the test is meant to validate concurrent access or merely happens to run concurrently.

Track per-test outcomes, including skips

Aggregate pass rates can obscure a test that stops running its assertion because its data is gone and begins skipping instead. Riaboshtanov recommends recording one outcome per test run and inspecting per-test history for repeated regressions or repeated skips. His suggestion to watch for a three-run streak is an operational heuristic, not an industry standard or a measured threshold.

Analytics tools can help surface test-level history, failures, or flaky behavior, but they do not replace correcting ownership and cleanup in the test. Flakiness.io describes test analytics and per-test performance history for GitHub and GitLab, including Playwright support (Flakiness.io). Codecov describes Test Analytics for surfacing failed and flaky tests (Codecov Test Analytics). Cypress documents flaky-test detection, scoring, alerts, and run history in Cypress Cloud (Cypress flaky-test management).
