Wondering what you can use your old phone for? If its camera, battery, wireless connections or ports still work, it may be useful as a webcam, camera monitor, music player or compatible USB-C power source—even without cellular service. The right choice depends on the phone’s condition and whether it still supports the software the job requires.
Choose a second job that fits the phone

A phone’s camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or local storage can still be useful after its cellular plan ends. Check the current app listing and the phone maker’s guidance for the specific model: the cited sources do not establish a universal minimum operating-system version.
1. Use it as a webcam
A phone with a working camera can serve as a webcam through compatible software, as Sony suggests in its old-phone guidance. First check that the phone, computer and chosen app support the same setup and connection. Then select the phone as the camera in your video-call software and test it in the room and lighting where you plan to use it.

Compatibility is the deciding factor: the available guidance does not establish one universal setup or guarantee better image quality than your existing webcam. Sony’s article is older, so treat any named app examples there as historical rather than current endorsements.

2. Turn it into a camera monitor
A spare phone can provide a live view in another room or at an entryway. SpareCam currently describes an Android setup in which one phone acts as the camera and another as the viewer. Its instructions are vendor guidance, not independent testing or a security certification. Read the current app requirements and test both the live view and any alerts before relying on them.
Set it up with safety in mind
- Use a stable stand or mount that keeps the lens clear without blocking airflow.
- Keep the phone out of direct sun and away from fabric or other material that could trap heat.
- Do not leave a phone with a swollen, damaged or unstable battery plugged in or unattended.
- Use steady power for a fixed setup, and check that the phone does not become excessively hot.
SpareCam specifically cautions about battery condition, heat, direct sunlight, fabric and blocked airflow in its phone-camera setup guidance. A repurposed phone is a convenience project, not a substitute for a purpose-built baby-monitor or security system.

3. Keep it for music or casting
A phone that still has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can become a dedicated streaming or casting device, keeping playback separate from your everyday phone. Sony also notes that locally stored music and wired headphones can be useful when wireless access is limited. The phone does not need an active cellular plan for those uses if the required content and connections are available.

4. Share power only if the phone supports it
Some compatible USB-C phones can act as a small power source for another device using a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, according to Sony. This feature is model-dependent: having a USB-C port does not establish that the phone can output power. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact phone before relying on it to charge anything.
If none of those fits, try a remote mouse
Sony also suggests using an old phone as a remote mouse for a computer. This is a fallback if the display still works and compatible software is available. Check the current requirements for the phone and computer before installing an app.

Before you erase, trade in or recycle it
If the phone is not suitable for another job, prepare it before handing it off. Apple’s current iPhone and iPad guidance says: “Before selling, trading or giving the old device away, you can transfer information to your new device and remove personal information from your old device.” Its handoff instructions were published June 12, 2026; exact paths differ by device and software version.

- Back up what you want to keep. Make sure your photos, files and other important information are available elsewhere.
- Check account access. Confirm you know the credentials you need, and sign out of accounts and linked services using the maker’s current instructions.
- Move phone-number and authenticator access. The FTC warns that services may still use the old number and that authenticator apps may need to be reactivated. Update those services before wiping the phone.
- Remove removable cards. Take out the SIM and any memory card.
- Erase the device using its built-in reset process. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and software version. The UK National Cyber Security Centre explains the general principles in its device-erasure guidance; account locks, including Apple Activation Lock or Android factory reset protection, can prevent a recipient from using a device until handled correctly.
Apple’s and the FTC’s instructions cover different devices and circumstances: use the relevant maker’s current process rather than assuming the same reset steps apply to every phone. The FTC’s phone-disposal guidance, dated July 2022, also points to manufacturers, wireless providers and local electronics stores for recycling options. Apple offers trade-in or recycling for its devices, subject to current program terms and geographic availability.

If the phone controls smart-home equipment, arrange another way to control those devices before erasing or giving it away. The UK NCSC includes this practical warning in its second-hand device guidance.
