First, confirm that the 20 KB limit applies to the photo field—not to a signature or another upload. Exam portals set different file types, dimensions, and size ranges, so follow the current instructions for your specific exam and application cycle. If the photo really must be no more than 20 KB, crop and resize it to the stated dimensions, save it in the required format, and check both the file size and the portal preview before submitting.
Check what the 20 KB limit applies to
Read the label beside the upload field and the exam’s current official instructions. A size listed for a signature does not automatically apply to a photo, and “20 KB” may be a maximum or the lower end of a required range.
For example, the DGCA Pariksha FAQ specifies a scanned colour photo of up to 70 KB, while its scanned signature is limited to 20 KB. An IBPS recruitment application guide for the 2025 cycle gives a photo range of 20–50 KB and a signature range of 10–20 KB. These are requirements for particular applications, not universal rules; check the live notice for your exam.

File size is only one part of the upload specification. Confirm each of these for the exact photo field:

- File type: for example, JPEG or JPG.
- File-size rule: whether it is a maximum, a minimum, or a range.
- Dimensions: the required pixel dimensions or physical print size.
- Photo conditions: background, framing, recency, and any appearance requirements.
- Upload method: whether the portal accepts a prepared image or takes a live photo.
One illustration of why these details matter: the DGCA Pariksha FAQ calls for a JPEG/JPG photo measuring 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, with a white background and no border, the face occupying about 70% of the image, and a photo no more than three months old. Those specifications apply to DGCA Pariksha, not to other exam forms.
Prepare the file to match the stated specifications
- Start with a clear, correctly framed image. Use a suitable digital photo if you have one. If you only have a print, scanning is one way to create a digital file; official guidance describes scanning and then cropping or resizing images.
- Crop and resize to the required dimensions. Use the dimensions specified for the photo field, rather than assuming a generic passport-photo size. Keep the face clearly visible after cropping.
- Save in the accepted format. If the instructions require JPEG/JPG, save the finished image in that format.
- Check the file’s size and appearance. Verify that it meets the size rule and open it to make sure the face remains clear. If the portal shows a preview, inspect that too before submitting.
There is no single compression setting that works for every portal. The required dimensions, accepted formats, and minimum and maximum sizes determine what the finished file must satisfy.

Why requirements differ
Exam authorities and application cycles can set different specifications, even when the upload is called a “photo.” A government examination notice dated 2023-06-30, for example, listed JPEG, 20–50 KB, and approximate dimensions of 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, alongside photo-age and appearance requirements. That dated notice is an example of variation, not a current rule for other applications.

For the same reason, do not use a requirement from an older notice or another exam as a substitute for the current official instructions. The exact field and application cycle matter.
