Yes, a driverless cab can collect information about you and your ride. Waymo describes interior and exterior cameras, microphones, and trip-location records; Uber describes outward-facing cameras and other driving sensors; Tesla’s Robotaxi notice describes exterior and cabin-camera analytics and sound detection. That is a real privacy issue, but it does not by itself establish that an operator is identifying passengers by face or profiling them. Collection, automated analysis, human review, retention, and disclosure are separate questions—and the operators’ published explanations differ.

What do driverless-cab operators say they collect?

The details below reflect the named operators’ published materials. They are not a universal description of every robotaxi, and the notices do not establish that every sensor records continuously or that every ride is reviewed by a person.

Operator and source Information described Stated purposes and limits
Waymo, official Help page and privacy policy Interior and exterior camera information; audio information; pickup and drop-off locations, route information, and device-location information during trips. Exterior audio detection can detect sirens. Interior cameras may help with cleanliness, lost items, emergencies, rule compliance, and service improvement. Waymo says it does not use facial recognition or other biometric identification to identify individuals. Its materials also describe limited human review.
Uber, Road Data Collection Privacy Hub and official notice Outward-facing camera, lidar, and radar data, as well as location and time data. Faces and license plates may be incidentally captured. Uber says the data supports autonomous-driving research and validation, and that neither Uber nor its partners uses it to identify, track, or profile individuals.
Tesla, Robotaxi notice Exterior-camera analytics, cabin-camera analytics, and sound detection. The notice describes testing, research, feedback, and service improvement. It says cabin camera and microphone are not used by default until needed.

These descriptions are not directly interchangeable: for example, Uber’s cited collection notice concerns outward-facing road data, while Waymo and Tesla also describe cabin-related sensing. None of the cited materials supplies comparable figures for how many rides are sensed, reviewed, or retained.

Is your conversation being recorded?

Waymo

Waymo says the microphones inside the car are on during voice calls with Rider Support or when a rider actively chooses to enable them. That statement concerns the in-car microphones; it is distinct from exterior audio detection used to detect sirens. Waymo’s privacy policy also says it may process video and audio information, so the microphone activation statement should not be read as a claim that the vehicle collects no audio in any other way.

Uber

The Uber road-data materials cited here describe outward-facing sensors. They do not state that Uber records passenger conversations inside the vehicle.

Tesla

Tesla’s Robotaxi notice includes sound detection and says cabin camera and microphone are not used by default until needed. It does not define in the cited notice what circumstances count as “needed,” so riders should not assume a more specific activation rule than the notice provides.

Can the cameras capture your face or license plate?

They may capture people or vehicles incidentally when recording the road. Uber explicitly acknowledges that faces and license plates may appear in its outward-facing data. That is different from using an image to identify a person: Uber says its road data is not used to identify, track, or profile individuals. Waymo says it does not use facial recognition or other biometric identification to identify individuals. The cited Tesla notice describes cabin and exterior analytics but does not state a comparable biometric-identification prohibition.

Who can see the footage or other ride data?

Collection does not automatically mean a recording is routinely watched by an employee. Waymo’s materials describe limited human review, but the cited information does not specify all review triggers or who may access particular recordings. Uber says access to its road data is tightly limited and encrypted; it may share data with partners, service providers, or authorities under specified conditions. Those statements describe controls and possible disclosures, not a guarantee that data is never shared. The cited Tesla notice does not establish comparable access or disclosure details.

How long is robotaxi data kept?

Uber says road data is retained only as long as necessary or legally required; the cited notice does not give a single fixed retention period. The Waymo and Tesla materials described here do not establish a specific retention period for ride video or audio. A precise number of days for those recordings cannot be stated from these notices.

Can you opt out of robotaxi surveillance?

There is no single opt-out that applies across operators or sensor types in the cited materials. Waymo gives riders a choice to enable the in-car microphones, while its cited statement describes microphones as active during Rider Support voice calls. Tesla says cabin camera and microphone are not used by default until needed. Those microphone and cabin-system statements do not establish a way to turn off exterior sensing, trip-location records, or all data processing. The cited materials also do not establish a universal rider control for deleting every category of collected data.

If you want to minimize what a trip can reveal, avoid sharing sensitive information aloud or on a support call unless necessary, and consult the operator’s privacy materials for the service and region you are using. A cover, bag, or phone setting cannot control a vehicle operator’s exterior sensors or its trip records.

What “spying” gets right—and what it overstates

The concern is justified insofar as a driverless vehicle can sense its cabin and surroundings and associate information with a trip. Operators describe uses such as safety, support, operations, testing, and system improvement; their notices also describe limits and controls. But the existence of sensors is not proof of a general facial-identification or passenger-profiling program. To assess a particular ride, ask separately what is collected, whether it is automatically processed, when a person can review it, how long it is retained, and under what conditions it can be disclosed.
