Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA reminder needs to distinguish done from dismissed. If neither has happened, it is still owed. Treating those outcomes as one Boolean—such as “opened”—can make a closed window look like an answer, even though the task remains unresolved.
Why “opened” is the wrong question
Akram Sakib describes a Windows morning checklist that opens at 8 a.m. and checks every 30 seconds whether the day has been opened. If the user closes the window without setting the stored flag, the day remains unanswered, so the timer opens it again. The problem is that opening a prompt and answering it are different events.
A single flag cannot tell the program whether the user completed the checklist, deliberately declined it, or simply has not responded. Those outcomes require separate meaning.
Model each reminder occurrence with three outcomes
Store two explicit answers for a reminder occurrence: done and dismissed. Derive owed when neither answer is stored:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Done: the user completed the work.
- Dismissed: the user deliberately declined or cleared the reminder without completing the work.
- Owed: neither completion nor deliberate dismissal has been recorded.
In the example, a reminder slot also has an at field. The slot is settled if either done or dismissed is true; otherwise it is owed. Only owed slots should be eligible to open when due. This keeps dismissal from being misreported as task completion while preventing a deliberate dismissal from triggering the same reminder repeatedly.
Handle closing, minimizing, and late starts differently
Closing is not automatically an answer
Closing a reminder window should not set done just because the interface disappeared. If closing is intended to mean “not now” or “decline,” record that as an explicit dismissal. Otherwise leave the occurrence owed and define a separate policy for when it should be shown again.

Minimizing leaves the reminder owed
Sakib treats minimizing differently from answering: a minimized window remains owed, but the timer should leave it alone rather than repeatedly interrupting the user. In other words, the state can remain unresolved while the presentation logic pauses.
Prevent a burst of overdue prompts
When the app starts late and several slots are already due, the example suggests dismissing other past-due slots after one has been answered. That is a proposed behavior for this checklist, not a universal reminder rule. A product should decide whether overdue occurrences appear individually, are coalesced, or are settled by a user action.

Choose state semantics for the product, not the platform enum
Notification systems can distinguish delivery lifecycle from user intent. Apple’s archived notification guide says that tapping an applicable button or directly closing the interface counts as explicit dismissal; ignoring a notification or flicking away a banner does not. Opening the app is represented separately. Those are mobile notification semantics, not a direct specification for a desktop reminder window. Apple’s archived notification guide was updated June 4, 2018.
Amazon’s Alexa Smart Properties Reminders API provides another example of service-specific lifecycle states: it supports one-time reminders and recurring schedules, and documents ON and COMPLETED statuses. Access is limited to registered Alexa Smart Properties partners, and the API reference lists geography-specific limits, including a restriction on health reminders in the UK and EU. These API states describe that service; they do not establish that every reminder app needs the same enum or exact three-state implementation. Amazon’s Alexa Smart Properties Reminders API reference
Questions to settle before implementing recurring reminders
- What does each action mean? Separate completing work from clearing a prompt.
- What counts as explicit? Do not infer a deliberate answer from inaction unless the product clearly defines that behavior.
- What happens when a prompt is hidden or minimized? Decide whether it remains owed and whether presentation should pause.
- How are overdue occurrences handled? Choose between showing each one, coalescing them, or settling some after the user responds.
- Where does the answer apply? Define whether a response settles one reminder occurrence or an entire recurring series.
The article is a software-design example, not a quantitative study; it establishes no measured performance or engagement gain from the model. As Sakib puts it: “If a boolean is forcing you to invent workarounds, it’s usually not the wrong value. It’s the wrong question.”
