If a website is missing from your browser history, the cause may be retention limits, a search that missed the entry, or a browser database that cannot be accessed. In Chrome, first check what history is available and try its built-in search methods. If Firefox shows a specific bookmarks-and-history database error, start with simple restarts before considering any repair that can erase history.
Why can’t I find a site in my history?
A missing result does not automatically mean history search is broken. In Chrome, the History page lists pages visited in the last 90 days. It excludes Chrome pages, Incognito visits, and entries that have already been deleted. If you use multiple profiles or devices, also check that you are looking in the profile you used when you visited the site.
Chrome can show visits from other devices when you are signed in and history sync is enabled. That means the signed-in account and sync settings affect what appears. Deleting synced browsing history is not a harmless search test: Chrome says deletion also removes it from synced devices.
Recommended Free Tools
- Could the visit have been excluded or removed? Check whether it was in Incognito, older than 90 days, or deleted.
- Are you in the right profile? Check the profile and, if relevant, the signed-in account and history-sync state.
- Is the entry present but hard to match? Try Chrome’s direct history search controls before changing browser data.
Google documents these limits and sync behavior in its Chrome browsing history help.

How to search Chrome history directly
Chrome provides two standard ways to search your history. Try both, using a distinctive word from the page title or a fragment of its web address rather than a broad term.
- Search the History page: Open Chrome’s History page and enter a title or URL term in its search bar.
- Search from the address bar: Type
@history, press Tab or Space, then enter your search terms.
If a short query misses the page, try a more distinctive title phrase or domain fragment. A match can only appear if the visit was recorded and remains available in the profile or synced history you are searching.

Chrome’s AI history search is a separate option
Chrome also offers optional AI-powered history search, but it is not a repair for ordinary title-and-URL search. Google says the feature requires a US location and English Chrome, and may be unavailable on managed profiles. It can search only sites visited after the feature is turned on; Google states, “Only the websites you visit after you turn on this feature can be used by AI-powered history and may appear in your AI best matches.” For best matches, Google recommends a precise query of two or more words.
The feature stores page contents locally in encrypted form, and Google notes that this local storage may affect Chrome performance. Consider that data-storage and performance trade-off before enabling it. See Google’s instructions for searching browsing history in Chrome with AI for current availability and details.

Firefox says the bookmarks and history system will not work
This Firefox message is different from a search that simply returns no result: “The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox’s files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.” Mozilla says inaccessible places.sqlite or favicons.sqlite files can trigger it. Common causes include another program using the file or file damage after an unexpected shutdown, such as a power failure.
Try restarts first
- Quit Firefox and reopen it.
- If the error remains, restart the computer and check Firefox again.
Mozilla says these steps often resolve the issue. Its detailed instructions are in Fix “The bookmarks and history system will not be functional”, last updated June 18, 2026.

Recreate the database only as a last resort
If restarting does not help, Mozilla documents creating fresh database files in the Firefox profile folder. This involves fully quitting Firefox and renaming or deleting the database files, including their SQLite shared-memory and write-ahead-log companion files if present. Renaming files where the instructions allow gives you a backup to preserve while troubleshooting; do not casually remove profile databases.
This step has a real cost: Mozilla warns, “Your browsing history will be lost,” although Firefox restores bookmarks from the most recent bookmark backup. Follow Mozilla’s profile-specific instructions carefully. The article also describes trying a new Firefox profile as a later fallback.

Diagnose before resetting or changing profile data
If the symptom is not the specific Firefox database error, establish what is actually happening before changing files or resetting the browser. Mozilla recommends clarifying what happens, what you expected, how often it occurs, whether other software changed, and whether new data survives a restart. Check extensions and use Firefox Troubleshoot Mode to help isolate extension-related or other browser issues. Mozilla’s troubleshooting and diagnosis guide provides the broader process.
Exporting history is not the same as repairing search
If you want to inspect or keep a local copy of browser history, the browser-history project documents a command-line utility that can export supported browser histories as CSV, JSON, or JSONL. Its version 0.5.0 documentation lists support for several browser families and profiles. Check that version’s supported browsers and commands before relying on it; exporting or inspecting history does not itself repair browser search.
