If you see “Your account is temporarily locked to prevent unauthorized use,” stop retrying your password, then use the account provider’s official recovery steps. The message indicates a temporary sign-in lock in some systems, but its wording does not prove that someone accessed your account, and there is no universal wait time. For a work, school, or government account, contact your organization’s IT help desk if the lock persists or returns.
What the message means
Microsoft’s Azure AD B2C error-code reference associates this wording with error AADB2C90114 and advises trying again later: Microsoft Azure AD B2C error codes. The exact wording also appears in reports about Microsoft 365 and Outlook accounts, but those community discussions do not establish one policy for every Microsoft account or for other services: Microsoft Q&A: Microsoft 365 account report and Microsoft Q&A: Outlook.com account report.
Some services show a lockout after too many incorrect sign-in attempts. For example, Australian Defence’s VERA guide says multiple failed attempts can temporarily lock an account, while Ohio University says its warning can appear after too many failed attempts from the current device. The message itself does not identify what triggered the lock, so it should not be treated as proof of a successful intrusion.

- Stop entering passwords. Repeated guesses may extend the lock on some systems. Western Kentucky University, for example, says additional failed attempts extend its lockout timer.
- Check the service’s official recovery page. If it is a personal account, use the provider’s verified password-reset or identity-verification process. A Microsoft Q&A response describes a security-code and password-change route for an Outlook.com report, but that is not a universal procedure.
- For an organization account, contact IT. Work, school, and government accounts may require an administrator to verify your identity or clear the lock. Use your employer’s or school’s known help-desk channel rather than links or contact details in unsolicited messages.
- After access is restored, secure the account if anything seems wrong. Follow the provider’s official security guidance, and do not give your password or recovery codes to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
How long does the lock last?
It depends on the service and its policy. Published examples show why one timer should not be assumed: Australian Defence’s VERA new-starter guide suggests waiting 30–60 minutes; Ohio University’s Office of Information Technology suggests 5–15 minutes; Western Kentucky University’s ITS says a one-minute lock follows ten failed attempts, with additional failures extending the lock. These are separate institutional rules, not a general Microsoft or internet-wide standard.

| Service | Published lockout guidance | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Australian Defence VERA | Suggested wait: 30–60 minutes | Department of Defence VERA New Starter guide |
| Ohio University | Suggested retry interval: 5–15 minutes | Ohio University OIT account and password guidance |
| Western Kentucky University | One-minute lock after ten failed attempts; further failed attempts extend it | WKU ITS FAQ |
Follow the instructions for your own provider or organization rather than applying one of these examples to a different service. If waiting does not restore access, or the lock recurs, ask the provider or administrator for the next step.
When to contact an administrator or support
For a managed account, contact your organization’s IT service desk if the stated wait has passed, the lock keeps returning, or you cannot complete the required verification. Australian Defence’s VERA guide directs persistent or repeated problems to its ICT Service Desk. Intel’s Azure Portal support guidance likewise tells users in that context to contact company IT or Microsoft Support: Intel support: Azure Portal sign-in issues.

For a personal account, start with the provider’s official recovery channel. If you cannot verify ownership through its self-service process, use the provider’s published support route. Never share a password or one-time recovery code with someone who approaches you claiming they can unlock the account.
Is a product needed to unlock it?
No physical product is identified as a way to clear this warning. Recovery depends on the account provider’s verification process or, for managed accounts, help from the organization’s administrator. Tools such as password managers or security keys may serve other security purposes, but they are not a fix for an active lockout.
