No. If all you need is an image of a rendered webpage, a hosted screenshot API can accept a URL and capture options, then return an image—without you installing or operating a separate Playwright or Puppeteer browser runtime. Use your own browser automation when the screenshot is one step in a more involved interaction, when an existing script already handles important behavior, or when deployment and data-control requirements favor self-hosting.
Can I take a website screenshot with an API?
Yes. A direct screenshot API is the simplest hosted approach for a capture-only job: send a webpage URL and the options you need, and receive an image. The provider operates the browser infrastructure; your application does not have to launch and maintain its own browser runtime for that request.
Browserless documents a REST screenshot endpoint that accepts a URL and Puppeteer-style screenshot options, can capture a full page or a selected element, and returns an image. ScreenshotOne also describes a hosted rendering API. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every page will render successfully or that one service outperforms another.

- You need one or scheduled webpage captures, rather than a sequence of browser actions.
- Your application can work from an image response and does not need to inspect or manipulate the page during rendering.
- You prefer not to maintain browser binaries, dependencies, execution capacity, and scaling for this task.
When you still need browser automation
A URL-to-image request is not the same thing as controlling a browser. If a capture depends on navigating through a workflow, clicking controls, or applying custom logic from an existing script, use browser automation. Browserless says its managed browsers can be connected to from Playwright or Puppeteer scripts; it also documents a Docker self-hosting option.

Do I need Playwright if my project already uses it?
Not necessarily. Playwright already has a screenshot API: it can save an image to a file or return image bytes, and it supports full-page and element captures. For modest capture needs that are already part of a Playwright workflow, using the existing project may be simpler than adding a separate service.
The decision is whether you need to operate the browser yourself, not whether Playwright can take screenshots. A hosted API shifts browser-runtime operations to a provider; it does not eliminate the need to decide what to capture or handle page-specific behavior.

How do the three approaches differ?
| Approach | How it works | Best fit | What you operate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct screenshot API | Send a URL and capture options; receive an image. | One-off or scheduled captures with limited interaction. | Your request and integration; the provider runs the browser infrastructure. |
| Managed browser session | Connect an existing Playwright or Puppeteer script to a remote browser. | Multi-step automation where you still need browser actions. | Your automation code; the provider runs the browser infrastructure. |
| Self-managed Playwright or Puppeteer | Your script launches and controls a browser in your environment. | Existing automation, custom runtime needs, or local deployment and data constraints. | Browser, dependencies, execution capacity, and scaling. |
These are workflow distinctions based on the documented service interfaces, not measured differences in speed, reliability, capture quality, or cost.

What should I check before choosing a screenshot service?
Hosted capture removes some infrastructure work, not rendering decisions. A page may load content lazily, require authentication, block automated requests, or behave differently depending on request settings. Browserless documents endpoint settings and troubleshooting for its screenshot API; check the chosen provider’s documentation against the actual pages and access requirements in your workflow.

What does a hosted screenshot API cost?
ScreenshotOne’s vendor pricing page, accessed October 5, 2026, advertised 100 free screenshots per month. It listed these paid plans at that time:
| ScreenshotOne plan | Vendor-listed price | Vendor-listed monthly screenshots |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $17/month | 2,000 |
| Growth | $79/month | 10,000 |
| Scale | $259/month | 50,000 |
These are vendor-published plan details, not independent market statistics. Request rates and overage prices differ by plan, and prices, quotas, and features can change; verify current terms on the provider’s pricing page before relying on them. No comparable evidence establishes total cost for a hosted API versus running your own browser.

What is the simplest way to screenshot a webpage in Node?
For a capture-only task, call a screenshot API from your Node application: provide the target URL and the provider’s supported capture options, then handle the returned image. The exact request format, authentication method, and response handling depend on the service, so follow its current API documentation rather than assuming that providers share an interface.

If the capture is already integrated into a Playwright script, use Playwright’s screenshot API unless there is a concrete reason to move browser operations elsewhere. For a multi-step script without a local browser runtime, a managed remote browser is a different option from a simple URL-to-image endpoint.
