Genuinely non-smart TVs are hard to find in the 2026 consumer market described by available reporting. For most buyers, a more practical choice is a TV with the picture quality, connections, and support they need, kept offline if they do not want the set’s built-in online features. That works as a display for HDMI devices, but it also means the TV’s own streaming apps will not work.

“Dumb TV” is an informal label, not a precise product category. The right choice depends on what you want to avoid: an account, internet access, home-screen ads, viewing recognition, voice features, or simply paying for capabilities you will not use.

Why are non-smart TVs so hard to find?

Tom’s Guide reported in February 2026 that nearly all TVs on the market have built-in smart platforms. Its TV editor, Michael Desjardin, explained the trend this way: “The reason almost no one is selling dumb TVs is because the business of smart TVs is too lucrative.” That is his explanation, not an independently established finding about every manufacturer or market.

The reporting describes the remaining non-smart options largely as commercial displays or basic sets from brands the author would not recommend. It is a reviewer assessment, not a complete inventory, and there is no established market-wide count or percentage of non-smart TVs. The practical point is that shoppers should not assume a standard consumer TV will lack internet features.

For a named alternative that is still a smart TV, Tom’s Guide points to the TCL QM5K as a budget set whose internet-based features can be disabled. It should not be mistaken for a non-smart TV; verify the model’s current availability and specifications before buying.

What do you actually want to avoid?

These concerns are related but not interchangeable. Being offline addresses network communication while disconnected; it does not remove the smart platform or its settings. Disabling automatic content recognition (ACR) addresses a specific form of viewing recognition, not every kind of data collection. A TV that stays online for apps may still have other platform or app data practices.

  • No internet connection from the TV: Use the set offline and connect only the HDMI or broadcast sources you choose.
  • No built-in streaming: A genuinely non-smart set would avoid a built-in platform, but the available reporting describes consumer options as scarce. An offline smart TV can also serve as a display.
  • Less viewing recognition: Look for ACR and related privacy controls, then check what the specific model says those settings do.
  • Fewer accounts or less setup: Check the setup process and account requirements for the TV and any external device. A streamer may require its own account or platform relationship.
  • Less expense: Compare the actual set’s price, picture, connections, and support rather than assuming that a smart platform is the main source of cost.

Which approach fits your priorities?

Approach What it provides Main tradeoff
Search for a genuinely non-smart set No built-in platform to configure. Selection may be narrow. Verify that the display has the tuner, ports, audio connections, and other features you need; no complete market inventory is established.
Buy a smart TV and keep it offline A display for HDMI equipment or broadcast sources, without connecting the TV to the internet. The TV’s online streaming apps will not work. Offline setup and update options vary by model and firmware.
Keep the TV online but disable ACR Online apps remain available, while a specific category of viewing recognition may be limited. Other telemetry and app data practices remain possible, and controls and results vary by platform and model.
Keep the TV offline and add a streaming device Online apps through an external device without connecting the TV itself. The streamer’s maker and the apps have their own data practices, sign-in flows, and privacy controls.
Use local media, a Blu-ray player, or a media PC More control over what equipment is connected and when. May require extra hardware, setup, and expense.

Compare the screen size and picture quality you want, the total cost and product support, your HDMI, tuner, and audio needs, whether setup can be completed offline, and which privacy controls and account requirements apply. If built-in streaming is not useful to you, paying attention to offline behavior and connections may matter more than the label on the box.

How does an offline smart TV work?

Many smart TVs can be used without an internet connection: skip network setup if the set permits it, or disconnect it after setup. The exact path depends on the model, operating system, and firmware. RTINGS’ offline-use guide, updated September 18, 2026, describes setup steps for several systems and notes that they vary.

With the TV offline, you can use connected equipment such as a game console, disc player, media PC, or antenna if the set has the required inputs or tuner. Built-in online streaming apps will not work without internet access. Offline operation limits the TV’s ability to send viewing information while it has no network connection; it does not establish that the TV never collects information locally. Reconnecting it may restore data transmission.

Does using HDMI prevent a smart TV from tracking viewing?

No. HDMI use alone is not a reliable privacy safeguard if the TV remains connected to the internet. A 2024 preprint examining Samsung and LG TVs reported ACR activity while a TV was used as an external display, as well as differences between devices in the UK and US. The findings are specific to the study’s devices and conditions, but they show why “I only use HDMI” is not the same as “the TV is offline.”

ACR is also only one category of data collection. RTINGS tested current TVs and devices and found that identifiable ACR traffic stopped or changed after opt-outs on some TVs. On others, ACR-specific traffic was difficult to distinguish from background services. Those results apply to the tested equipment and setup, not every TV or software version.

What can privacy settings and streaming devices change?

ACR and TV privacy controls

Controls can limit a specific kind of viewing recognition, but their names, scope, and effects differ. LG’s September 2026 privacy statement says that disabling ACR, withdrawing consent, or exercising applicable opt-out rights stops ACR collection on its products. This is LG’s statement about its own TVs, not a guarantee about all data collected by a TV or its apps.

Roku’s privacy policy covers Roku devices and services and describes disabling ACR through Smart TV Experience settings. Roku says unlinked mode is available only on some TV systems. Availability and menu paths depend on the product, so check the current policy and support information for the device you own.

External streaming devices

A streaming device can let you keep the TV itself offline while still using online apps, but it does not eliminate a platform’s data relationship. RTINGS found that Roku and Fire TV setup flows in its tested configurations involved platform sign-in and privacy controls. In the tested setup, Apple TV had a more compartmentalized model; that does not mean it is data-free. Each device and app has its own terms and settings.

If avoiding online services is the priority, local media, a disc player, or a media PC can reduce reliance on a TV platform or streamer, though they may add equipment and setup work. No connected-device arrangement should be treated as a universal privacy guarantee.

What should you check before buying?

  • Display needs: Choose the size and picture quality that suit your room and viewing distance.
  • Connections: Confirm the number and type of HDMI ports, audio outputs, and any antenna or cable tuner you need.
  • Offline setup: Check whether the specific model can complete setup without connecting to a network, and whether important functions remain usable.
  • Privacy controls: Look for the model’s ACR settings and opt-out options, and read what the manufacturer says they cover.
  • Accounts: Check whether the TV or any external streamer requires an account for setup or particular features.
  • Support: Review the manufacturer’s update and support policies for the model and software platform.
  • Real value: Compare the set’s price and features with what you will actually use; do not pay extra for online functions you do not want without considering offline alternatives.

For example, LG says eligible TVs receive security updates for up to five years from the initial release of the relevant webOS version, subject to its support policies and applicable requirements. That is LG’s policy statement, not a universal support period for TVs.
