Yes. In Windows 10 and Windows 11, you can turn classic System Protection on or off and change how much disk space it may use. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, then use the System Protection tab and select Configure. This interface does not offer a regular automatic schedule setting: Microsoft says restore points are created automatically “when needed.”
What settings can I change in System Protection?
The classic System Protection controls let you manage protection separately for each drive. In the Configure dialog, you can enable or disable protection and set the maximum disk space used for restore points. You can also create a restore point yourself from the System Protection tab.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the matching result and select the System Protection tab.
- Select the drive you want to manage, then choose Configure.
- Turn system protection on or off, or adjust the maximum-space slider, then apply the change.
To make a restore point manually, return to the System Protection tab, select Create, and follow the prompts. Microsoft describes automatic restore-point creation as happening “when needed,” rather than through a user-configurable routine schedule. Microsoft’s System Protection guidance covers the classic controls.
How do System Protection and VSS shadow storage differ?
System Protection restore points use snapshot technology associated with the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). The System Protection slider is the straightforward Windows interface; VSS shadow storage is a lower-level storage association that can be inspected and adjusted from an elevated Command Prompt.

- System Protection: Enable or disable protection for a drive, set its maximum-space allowance, and create a restore point manually.
- VSS shadow storage: Inspect which storage volume holds copies for a source volume, and change the maximum through
vssadmin. - Windows 11 point-in-time restore: A separate feature with its own Settings controls for frequency, retention, and maximum use. Its availability and defaults depend on edition and management status; do not treat its controls as settings for classic System Protection. Microsoft’s point-in-time restore documentation explains that feature.
How do I limit the space used by shadow copies?
For the classic restore-point allowance, use the System Protection Configure dialog and adjust the maximum-space slider. Windows may retain fewer older restore points when the available space is limited. Microsoft does not establish one universally correct percentage, so choose a limit based on available disk capacity and how much restore-point history you want to preserve.
For a VSS storage association, first inspect its source and storage volumes in an elevated Command Prompt:

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
vssadmin list shadowstorage
The command reports the associated volumes and space used. To set a maximum, use Microsoft’s documented syntax, substituting the appropriate volume letters and limit:

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=20%
The example is a syntax illustration, not a recommended setting for every PC. Inspect the existing association before changing it. Microsoft warns that resizing may cause shadow copies to disappear, so lowering the maximum can reduce the copies available for recovery. See Microsoft’s vssadmin resize shadowstorage reference and list shadowstorage reference.

It can make shadow copies disappear. Because restore points may depend on those copies, reducing the storage limit can reduce the recovery history available. Check which volume and association you are changing, and avoid lowering the cap casually.

Deleting copies is more direct and irreversible. Microsoft says vssadmin delete shadows permanently removes selected client-accessible shadow copies; deleted copies cannot be recovered, and previous versions or restore points that depend on them are lost. Confirm the target volume and the specific copies before running a deletion command. Microsoft’s delete shadows reference describes the command.

System Restore is meant to undo system changes without affecting personal files, but that is not a guarantee for every application or data situation. A restore point is a recovery aid, not a replacement for a separate backup of important files. Keep another copy of files you cannot afford to lose.
