Yahoo Messenger shut down in 2018, ending a service that began as Yahoo Pager in March 1998. Yahoo announced the closure on June 8, 2018, and users lost access after July 17. The news prompted reports of fans mourning a familiar part of the early internet—but nostalgia is a reaction, not proof that every person who grew up in the 1990s used the service.
When did Yahoo Messenger shut down?
Yahoo Messenger became inaccessible after July 17, 2018. Yahoo had announced the shutdown on June 8, giving users about five weeks to prepare. The service launched as Yahoo Pager in March 1998, so its run was roughly 20 years.

Yahoo Entertainment reported the launch and closure dates; TechCrunch also reported July 17 as the last day of access.
Why did Yahoo Messenger shut down?
Yahoo’s stated reason was that communications were changing and the company wanted to focus on tools it thought better suited to consumer needs. In its statement, quoted in Yahoo Entertainment’s June 8, 2018 report, Yahoo said: “As the communications landscape continues to change over, we’re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.”

At the time, coverage also placed the closure in the context of newer mobile messaging services overtaking desktop-era products. That helps explain the broader industry shift, but Yahoo did not cite a quantified user decline or identify competition as the single cause in its announcement.
Could users save their old Yahoo Messenger chats?
Contemporary reports said users had six months after the shutdown to download their message history. That historical window ended around January 2019; it was not an ongoing offer. TechCrunch reported the download period, as did Fortune via Yahoo Finance.
The sources documenting the shutdown do not establish an official way to retrieve Messenger histories today. If you did not save an archive during the original window, do not assume an old Yahoo account or a current Yahoo app can restore it.

Was Squirrel a Yahoo Messenger replacement?
Yahoo pointed users to Squirrel, an invite-only group-chat beta, when it announced Messenger’s closure. That was a suggested alternative at the time, not evidence of a direct successor or a lasting replacement for Messenger. Yahoo said there was no replacement for Messenger in its shutdown announcement, according to TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report.

Messenger had been around through a major transition in everyday online communication: from desktop chat services to newer mobile messaging. For people who used it, its closure could mark the loss of an old routine and a record of conversations. The Economic Times described fans mourning the end in its July 17, 2018 coverage, but that is qualitative reporting—not a survey of everyone born in the 1990s.
So the nostalgia in the headline captures a recognizable response, not a universal experience. The available reports do not establish what share of 1990s-born people used Yahoo Messenger or felt nostalgic about its shutdown.
