Changing your Yahoo password does not necessarily revoke a separate app password used by a mail client. Yahoo says app passwords remain active until you delete them. If you use Apple Mail on an iPhone, review Yahoo Account Security and, if you want to keep using Apple Mail, remove and re-add the Yahoo account using Yahoo as the provider.
What the 2016 report found—and what it does not prove today
On September 30, 2016, SecurityWeek reported that Zero Day Initiative researcher Simon Zuckerbraun found a Yahoo account configured in iOS Mail still accessible after the Yahoo password was reset. The report attributed the retained access to a Yahoo-issued credential that had not been revoked. Why changing your Yahoo password may not sign out Apple Mail
Your main Yahoo account password and a third-party app password are distinct credentials. Yahoo’s current help documentation says app passwords remain active after you change the main password; to invalidate one, delete it. Yahoo’s instructions for generating and managing app passwords
This distinction matters if you enabled two-step verification, Account Key, or another security feature that requires a third-party password for a mail client. A password change alone is not the documented way to revoke that client’s app password. Yahoo defines app passwords as credentials for accessing Yahoo Mail through other apps in its security-changes guidance.

Review Yahoo access and remove credentials you do not trust
- Secure the Yahoo account first. Sign in using your current credentials and check that your recovery and sign-in options are current.
- Open Yahoo Account Security. Review the connected apps and recent device sign-ins. These are separate views: a connected app is not the same thing as a current device sign-in. Yahoo’s unusual-activity guidance explains how to review them.
- Delete unrecognized or unwanted app passwords. Yahoo says deleting an app password is the way to invalidate it and remove the connected app’s access. Remove only credentials you do not need; a mail client that still relies on one may need to be set up again.
Keep using Apple Mail with Yahoo secure sign-in
Yahoo’s current guidance for Apple iOS Mail is to remove the Yahoo account from the iPhone and add it again, choosing Yahoo as the provider during setup. That provider selection lets the account use Yahoo’s secure sign-in flow rather than treating the setup as an arbitrary mail client. If Yahoo’s security settings require a client-specific app password, create one for that client and remember that changing your main Yahoo password does not invalidate it. If Apple Mail says “Server password has changed” or “Authentication failed”
Those messages can point to a client sign-in problem, but they do not by themselves establish whether your Yahoo account is secure or whether a credential has been revoked. Test Yahoo Mail in a browser first. If webmail works but Apple Mail does not, focus on the mail client setup: re-add the account using Yahoo as the provider, check that the required sign-in method is supported, and update its login details if prompted. If you cannot sign in to webmail either, resolve the Yahoo account sign-in issue before troubleshooting Apple Mail. If the client still cannot authenticate after account setup, Yahoo suggests using Yahoo Mail on the web or the Yahoo Mail app, or contacting the third-party app maker when that client is unsupported.
