XWorm 6.0 was announced in June 2025, and Trellix later described a campaign using the modular malware to load plugins for tasks including data theft, remote access, file manipulation, and ransomware. The “35+ plugins” figure is a reported capability count—not proof that every XWorm infection includes or uses all of them. For defenders, the practical concern is the combination of a changeable plugin set and an observed infection chain involving phishing or malicious websites, PowerShell, and process injection.

What is XWorm 6.0?

XWorm is a modular remote-access trojan first observed in 2022, according to Trellix researchers Niranjan Hegde and Sijo Jacob. Its architecture pairs a core client with DLL plugins that can add different malicious capabilities. Trellix describes the client receiving plugins from command-and-control (C2) infrastructure, storing plugin data in the Windows registry, and loading DLLs in memory in the campaign it analyzed.

Trellix reported that the earlier developer, known as XCoder, stopped providing updates after version 5.6 in late 2024. An account named XCoderTools announced version 6.0 on June 4, 2025. Trellix could not establish whether that account belonged to the original developer, so the announcement should not be treated as confirmation of who made the release.

The announcement claimed that version 6.0 fixed a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in version 5.6 and earlier. That is the account’s claim; Trellix did not verify that the fix applies across all circulating builds.

What can XWorm’s plugins do?

The Hacker News reported a count of “35+ plugins” based on Trellix’s analysis. That number describes reported capabilities, not how many plugins were present in a particular infection, how often each is deployed, or how prevalent XWorm is. The specific capabilities can vary by version and operator deployment.

Reported capability What it could enable Evidence qualification
Remote access and remote desktop Remote interaction with an infected computer. Described in Trellix’s campaign analysis and KPMG’s October 14, 2025 advisory.
Data theft and system information gathering Collection of credentials, other sensitive data, or details about the system. Reported plugin capabilities; the sources do not establish a victim count or amount of data stolen.
File management and manipulation Access to or changes to files on the infected system. Reported by Trellix and KPMG; the exact functions depend on the plugin and deployment.
Shell or hidden command execution Execution of commands on the infected computer. Described in the researchers’ and advisory’s capability lists.
Webcam streaming Potential access to webcam video. Included in KPMG’s description; not evidence that this capability appeared in every analyzed infection.
Ransomware Encryption of files and display of a ransom note. Trellix describes a ransomware plugin with these behaviors.
Persistence Mechanisms intended to help malware remain on a system. Described by KPMG; specific behavior may differ between deployments.

Trellix’s researchers summarized the design this way: “XWorm’s modular design is built around a core client and an array of specialized components known as plugins.” The quote appears in their Trellix analysis published October 2, 2025.

How does the observed infection chain work?

Trellix documented one campaign, not a universal installation method. In that chain, a malicious JavaScript file arrived through phishing email or a malicious website. Running it started a sequence that used a PDF decoy, PowerShell, and process injection before the client communicated with a C2 server.

  1. Delivery: A JavaScript file was delivered by phishing email or through a malicious website.
  2. Execution and decoy: When run, the script downloaded and executed PowerShell while displaying a harmless PDF to distract the user.
  3. Preparation: The PowerShell attempted to disable the Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI) and prepared the XWorm client and an injector.
  4. Injection: The injector placed the client into a legitimate Windows process, such as RegSvcs.exe.
  5. Communication and plugins: Trellix observed the client communicating with a C2 server; in the analyzed campaign, the client could receive and load plugins.

KPMG’s October 14, 2025 advisory also describes phishing, a PDF decoy, PowerShell, injection into a legitimate Windows process, dynamic plugin retrieval, and persistence mechanisms. These overlapping descriptions do not establish that every XWorm delivery follows the same chain.

Why are cracked XWorm builders a risk?

Trellix reports that cracked or modified builders circulated after the earlier project was abandoned. Researchers also found some XWorm V6 builder files uploaded to VirusTotal infected with XWorm. The finding illustrates a risk to anyone who downloads or runs illicit malware tooling: the builder itself may compromise the would-be operator. It does not establish how many such files are infected.

How can organizations detect and respond to XWorm?

The reports recommend layered defenses rather than reliance on a single indicator or control. The following measures map to the observed chain and reported behaviors:

  • Reduce exposure at delivery: Use email and web defenses to scrutinize suspicious attachments, links, and JavaScript files.
  • Monitor endpoint behavior: Investigate unexpected PowerShell activity, attempts to interfere with AMSI, suspicious process injection, and unusual execution inside legitimate Windows processes.
  • Watch for impact behaviors: Look for unexpected file access or changes, command execution, and rapid or suspicious file encryption.
  • Review network activity: Monitor for suspicious outbound communications that may indicate C2 activity, using current threat intelligence to assess indicators.
  • Investigate suspected compromise: Conduct threat hunting or a threat assessment, preserve relevant evidence, and follow the organization’s incident-response procedures.
  • Keep Windows updated: KPMG recommends applying Windows updates as part of defensive preparation.

KPMG published indicators of compromise in its October 2025 advisory. Because those indicators are time-sensitive, they should be checked against current threat intelligence before being used as a blocklist; an old indicator list alone cannot establish whether a system is safe.

The reviewed reports do not establish a victim count, prevalence rate, or financial-loss total. The plugin count should not be used as a proxy for any of those measures.
