The XTEP 160X 7.0 PRO is a firm, stiff, carbon-plated racing shoe whose propulsive forefoot is best suited to runners who like a direct toe-off and can load it at faster paces. Its less protective heel at lower forces makes it a less obvious fit for heel strikers or runners seeking a soft, forgiving ride.
What the XTEP 160X 7.0 PRO is built for
XTEP positions the 160X 7.0 PRO for road and track racing, from 5K through the marathon. Its listed use cases also include asphalt, track and gravel, and its product information targets professional and elite runners. The shoe combines an XTEP FIT upper, ACE+ midsole, GT700 carbon-fiber and PI-fiber plate, and XTEP DURA outsole. XTEP Norway’s product listing describes its intended use; XTEP’s corporate announcement presents the model as a performance shoe.
That racing focus matters: this is not simply a comfortable daily trainer with a plate. The central trade-off is a very rigid, propulsive forefoot against a firm ride that may feel harsh, particularly for runners who prefer softness or land heavily on the heel.

A stiff forefoot designed to drive toe-off
RTINGS tested a men’s US size 9 pair and found high responsiveness, with a notably stiff forefoot and rocker that work especially well at faster paces. Its lab measured forefoot bending energy return at 73.3%. That measurement describes the shoe in RTINGS’ test; it does not predict a particular runner’s speed or race result. The review’s scores were 8.5 for responsiveness, 8.3 for energy return, 8.3 for cushioning, 6.7 for stability and 9.6 for true-to-size fit. Those are RTINGS’ scores under its own methodology, not universal ratings of comfort or performance. Read the RTINGS review and methodology.

Heel protection depends on how hard you load it
RTINGS found strong forefoot protection across the force levels it tested, but the heel was less protective at lower forces and worked better under moderate and higher forces. In practical terms, the shoe may suit runners who land toward the forefoot or load the shoe decisively more than those looking for a forgiving heel at easy effort. RTINGS also described the heel as firm and the rear as narrow, making the shoe a stronger match for forefoot strikers than heel strikers.
Long-run cushioning and perceived bulk
In RTINGS’ lab test, its long-run cushioning measure changed from 9.27 J at 10 km to 8.97 J at 40 km. This is a test result, not a claim about injury prevention, shoe lifespan or how every runner will feel over a marathon. The review says cushioning held up over distance, while the shoe’s extra bulk became more noticeable late in long efforts.

How it compares with other racers in RTINGS’ review
RTINGS compares the shoe with the Li-Ning Feidian 6 Elite and Brooks Hyperion Elite 5. These are that review’s judgments about the tested models, not a guarantee that every version or size will feel the same.
| Shoe | Weight and ride | Cushioning and stability | Strike pattern and distance notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| XTEP 160X 7.0 PRO | Heaviest of the three in RTINGS’ comparison; stiffest rocker and most propulsive forefoot. | Firm heel; forefoot protection remained strong across tested force levels. RTINGS says stability is a consideration late in a race. | Better suited to forefoot strikers than heel strikers. RTINGS says it is better suited to half and full marathons than the XTEP 260X 3.0. |
| Li-Ning Feidian 6 Elite | More cushioned and energetic than the XTEP, according to RTINGS. | Less stable than the XTEP, according to RTINGS. | RTINGS does not establish a specific strike-pattern or race-distance advantage in this comparison. |
| Brooks Hyperion Elite 5 | Lighter than the XTEP, with a higher drop, according to RTINGS. | RTINGS describes a more heel-biased fit; it does not give a directly comparable heel-versus-forefoot cushioning figure here. | The more heel-biased fit may be relevant to runners who do not favor the XTEP’s forefoot-oriented feel. |
RTINGS’ comparison does not establish that one shoe is best for everyone. It suggests a useful choice: prioritize the XTEP for its rigid, forceful toe-off; consider the alternatives if lighter weight, more cushioning or a more heel-oriented feel matters more. For shorter workouts and races, RTINGS points to the XTEP 260X 3.0 rather than the 160X 7.0 PRO.

What XTEP claims about the plate and outsole
XTEP said in a 2025 corporate announcement that the GT700 plate offers 8% greater propulsion than the previous generation and that the DURA outsole improves slip resistance by 38.5%. These are manufacturer claims, not percentages independently validated by RTINGS. The independent review supports describing the shoe as stiff and responsive; it does not confirm those specific improvements. XTEP’s 2025 announcement also described the ACE+ midsole as intended to provide stable performance across a 42-kilometer marathon.
Fit, regional price and availability
RTINGS reported that its tested version fit true to size and came in one standard width. XTEP Norway also describes the model as true to size and provides a size guide and size conversions. Runners who need a particular width should check the exact regional version and the seller’s exchange policy rather than assume that all markets offer the same options.

At the time of the sourced product listing, XTEP Norway showed the men’s model at NOK 3,699, with listed sizes, delivery in 1–3 business days, free size exchange and a 30-day return period for unused shoes. Those are Norway-market retailer terms, not a worldwide price or a promise that the same terms remain available; check the listing for current stock and conditions. XTEP’s corporate announcement gave a launch-era China retail price of RMB 1,299. That historical figure is not a current global price quote. Check XTEP Norway’s current listing.
The review evidence does not establish a race-time advantage, injury-rate reduction or lifespan figure. Consider the 160X 7.0 PRO for its particular ride and fit, not as a guarantee of those outcomes.
