What is XPath in Selenium?
XPath is a language for selecting nodes in a document tree. Selenium WebDriver supports it as one of its eight traditional locator strategies: your test supplies an XPath expression to identify one or more elements. Selenium’s locator guide shows both absolute and relative expressions and demonstrates XPath through its Java API.
For example, //input[@name='fname'] means: search for an input element among the document’s descendants whose name attribute equals fname. The initial // searches through descendants; the bracketed expression is a predicate that filters the matches.
How do I write an XPath in Selenium?
Start with a stable attribute
When the target has a useful attribute, write a relative expression that selects the element by that attribute. Selenium’s guide uses //input[@name='fname'] as a relative XPath example.

Use an absolute path only to understand the distinction
An absolute XPath spells out the path from the document root. Selenium illustrates one with /html/form/input[1]. The final [1] selects the first matching input at that step. Because this expression depends on the exact nesting of the page, adding or rearranging markup can make it point elsewhere or stop matching. Prefer a shorter relative expression when it identifies the intended element clearly.
Use predicates for attributes, text, and relationships
//button[@type='submit']selects buttons whosetypeattribute issubmit.//button[.='Save']selects a button whose element text is exactlySave.//form[@id='profile']//input[@name='email']selects an email input that is a descendant of the form whose ID isprofile.
These are standard illustrative XPath patterns. Confirm them against the page’s actual DOM and check that the expression selects the intended element. Text matching can be sensitive to the exact text present, including spacing and additional text within an element.

In Selenium’s Python binding, pass the XPath to By.XPATH with find_element:

Make the match count intentional
A singular find-element call returns the first matching element in the current search context. It does not prove that the XPath is unique. If the expression could match several elements, make it more specific—or use a plural lookup when collecting all matches is the actual goal. Selenium describes element lookup in its element-finding guide.
When should I use XPath instead of CSS?

Make XPath locators more reliable
- Favor stable attributes. Prefer a predictable attribute over an element’s position or a long chain of ancestors.
- Keep the expression readable. A compact locator is easier to review and debug.
- Check uniqueness when uniqueness matters. A singular lookup returns the first match, so a broad XPath can silently select a different matching element than intended.
- Handle dynamic values carefully. If your code inserts external data into an XPath string, account for quote characters in that value. Otherwise the expression may become invalid or select something unintended.
- Separate locating from waiting. Finding an element and waiting for it to appear are different tasks. For dynamic pages, consult Selenium’s current waiting strategies documentation and choose a wait appropriate to the condition your test needs.
Troubleshoot XPath that does not find the right element
No element is found
- Inspect the live DOM and check the tag name, attribute name, and attribute value; the page may not match the markup you expected.
- Check quote characters in the expression, especially when values are assembled from variables.
- If the page is dynamic, determine whether the element has appeared before the lookup; use an appropriate Selenium wait rather than assuming that a valid XPath makes the element immediately available.
The wrong element is returned
The XPath may match multiple elements, and a singular lookup returns the first one in the search context. Add a stable predicate, narrow the search to a relevant parent, or use a plural lookup and inspect the matches if collecting them is intended.
The locator breaks after a page change
An absolute path, positional predicate, or long ancestor chain relies on page structure. Re-check the DOM and replace structural assumptions with a stable attribute or a shorter relationship-based expression where possible.
The expression is hard to maintain
Consider whether an ID or CSS selector identifies the same target more simply. If XPath is necessary, split the reasoning into a clear relationship and a small number of predicates, then verify the result in the page’s DOM.
