For most command-line pipelines that need a plain table of rows and columns, CSV is the more convenient working format. It is text and can be handled by CLI tools for selecting, filtering, summarizing, converting, and querying data. Keep XLSX when you need spreadsheet features such as multiple worksheets, formatting, or charts. Exporting an XLSX sheet to CSV creates a derived table, not an equivalent copy of the workbook.
How CSV and XLSX differ
CSV represents records and fields as text. RFC 4180 documents a widely used convention for headers, comma-separated fields, quoting, and escaping quotation marks. It is informational, not a formal specification that every CSV implementation follows identically.
XLSX is a spreadsheet workbook format. Microsoft says it can preserve worksheet and chart data, formatting, and other workbook features. By contrast, Microsoft describes CSV as saving the text and values displayed in cells of the active worksheet.
Choose based on what the pipeline needs
| Decision | CSV | XLSX |
|---|---|---|
| Best role | Interchange or pipeline input/output when the data is a simple table | Source workbook when worksheet structure or presentation features matter |
| Command-line handling | Works naturally with text-oriented tools, provided the CSV is parsed correctly | Requires a workbook-aware reader or converter and a deliberate worksheet choice |
| What remains | Text and values exported from one worksheet; formatting is lost | Supported workbook features, including worksheet and chart data and formatting |
| Key risk | Incorrect assumptions about quoting, delimiters, encoding, or inferred types can change interpretation | Flattening a workbook may omit other worksheets and workbook-level features |
| Performance | No universal speed advantage is established by the cited documentation | No universal speed advantage is established by the cited documentation |
Use CSV for straightforward tabular jobs
CSV is a good fit when the downstream job expects rows and columns, workbook presentation is irrelevant, and portability or composing shell operations is important. csvkit 2.2.0 documents CLI commands for listing column names, selecting columns, filtering rows, converting formats, producing summary statistics, and querying with SQL.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a CSV-aware parser rather than treating every newline as a record boundary. RFC 4180 permits quoted fields to contain line breaks, as well as commas that must not be mistaken for field separators.
Keep XLSX when the workbook itself matters
Retain XLSX as the source of record if formatting, chart data, or worksheets beyond the active sheet are important. Microsoft notes that CSV export saves only the active worksheet and loses formatting. A CSV extracted for a pipeline should therefore be treated as a table export, not a replacement backup of the workbook.

How to process an XLSX file from the command line
Convert or read the workbook with a tool that understands Excel files, and specify which sheet supplies the pipeline’s table. csvkit’s in2csv accepts Excel formats and supports worksheet selection. In Python, pandas provides separate read_csv and read_excel interfaces; its documentation describes reading Excel 2007+ .xlsx files with an engine such as openpyxl.
- Identify the intended worksheet. Do not assume the active sheet or first sheet is the data the job requires.
- Extract that sheet. For csvkit, consult
in2csvdocumentation for the worksheet-selection option and command syntax. - Validate the exported table. Check the sheet, headers, types, and values that the downstream job relies on before using the export.
- Parse the result consistently. Make delimiter, quoting, encoding, and type-handling assumptions explicit where the tool allows it.
Avoid surprises from CSV sniffing and type inference
csvkit documents automatic dialect sniffing and type inference, and cautions that they can sometimes be wrong. When deterministic handling matters, its documentation describes --snifflimit 0 to disable sniffing and --no-inference to disable inference. Check the help for the specific command: an option available in one utility does not necessarily apply to every csvkit command.

Type inference can be consequential when values that look numeric are actually identifiers or when formatting affects how a value should be interpreted. Verify what the consuming tool reads instead of assuming that a text export will preserve the workbook’s data types or display behavior.

The cited format and tool documentation does not provide a controlled XLSX-versus-CSV performance benchmark, so there is no supported universal speed winner or file-size crossover to quote. CSV’s text form often makes it convenient to compose simple command-line operations, but actual processing depends on the tools, data, and workload. csvkit advises considering SQL-oriented workflows or other tools for larger files or more complex analysis; that is qualitative guidance, not a quantified threshold.

Practical decision rule
- Choose CSV when the pipeline needs a flat table and workbook features are not required.
- Choose XLSX as the retained source when sheets, formatting, charts, or other workbook structure matter.
- Use both when appropriate: preserve the workbook, extract the intended worksheet to CSV for the pipeline, and validate the export before relying on it.
