If an XLSX converter returns blank cells for formula totals, it may be reading the formula’s last saved result rather than calculating the formula itself. When that stored result is missing or outdated, the converter may have nothing to display. Recalculate the workbook in Excel or LibreOffice Calc, save it, and try the conversion again. This is a likely explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis: the converter and workbook details determine the exact cause.
Why formula cells can convert to blanks
A formula and its calculated result are distinct. Microsoft describes calculation as computing formulas and displaying the results as values in their cells. A workbook can contain formula text without a current stored result for another program to read. Some readers expose the formula; others can be configured to read the value stored the last time a spreadsheet application calculated the sheet. For example, the Python library openpyxl’s data_only option controls whether a formula cell exposes its formula or its stored value. That illustrates one possible reader behavior; it does not establish how an unnamed converter works.
Workbook calculation settings can also affect the stored results. Microsoft documents automatic calculation, manual calculation, and recalculation before saving, and notes that a workbook retains the calculation option selected by its author. Recalculate the workbook and retry the conversion
In Excel
- Make a copy of the workbook so the original remains unchanged.
- Open the copy in Excel and check the calculation mode under Formulas > Calculation Options. If calculation is set to Manual, choose Automatic if appropriate for your workflow.
- Select Formulas > Calculate Now to recalculate, then save the workbook.
- Run the converter on the saved copy and check whether the total cells now contain values.
In LibreOffice Calc
If Excel is unavailable, open a copy in LibreOffice Calc and select Data > Calculate > Recalculate Hard. LibreOffice documents this command as forcing recalculation of formula cells, including non-volatile formulas, even when no new input event has occurred. If the converted totals are still blank
Recalculation is a useful diagnostic and recovery step, but it does not prove that the converter supports every formula or workbook feature. Check the converter’s documentation or settings for whether it evaluates formulas, reads cached results, or exports formulas as formulas. Also check support for the functions used in the totals and for any external workbook links; behavior can depend on the converter and its version.
- Compare a small, known total in Excel or Calc with the converted output.
- Check whether the total depends on formula functions the converter supports.
- Check whether external links or other workbook features affect the formula result.
- Confirm that the converter reads the saved workbook copy you recalculated, not the original file.
The converter’s name and version, workbook calculation mode, and formula types are needed to identify the exact failing component. Without those details, it is not possible to determine whether the issue is an absent cached result, unsupported formula evaluation, or another product-specific behavior.
