For the question behind “Xiaomi Mi A3 review: more capable than you might think,” the verdict is mixed: the 2019 phone delivered AMOLED contrast, clean Android One software, useful cameras, strong battery life, microSD storage, an IR blaster and a headphone jack, but its 720p display, unreliable fingerprint reader, missing NFC and aging software make it a cautious 2026 purchase.
The Mi A3 was unusually well-rounded for an affordable phone when it launched. Xiaomi combined a glass-bodied design, USB-C, a 4,030mAh battery and flexible triple-camera hardware with a nearly stock Android experience. The phone did not compete with premium devices on processing power, display sharpness or connectivity, but it offered more practical features than its modest price suggested.
The important distinction is between being good in 2019 and being a sensible purchase in 2026. A clean interface and headphone jack remain useful, but official support is historical, the battery is now five to seven years old, and imported examples may not work reliably on every carrier.

Key takeaways
- The Xiaomi Mi A3 paired a Snapdragon 665, 4GB of RAM, AMOLED display and Android One software with practical extras including microSD expansion, an IR blaster, USB-C and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
- The 6.088-inch AMOLED panel has excellent blacks and contrast, but its 1560 × 720 resolution is visibly softer than the Full HD displays used by many contemporary competitors.
- The 48MP primary camera produced good daylight photos for its class, while the 8MP ultrawide and 2MP depth cameras added flexibility; low-light detail and video performance were less impressive.
- The 4,030mAh battery could last more than a day when new, but a 2019 handset’s battery health must be checked rather than inferred from launch-era testing.
- The Mi A3 has no NFC, 5G, IP68 rating, wireless charging or stereo speakers, and Android One should not be treated as an active or indefinite update guarantee in 2026.
- The Mi A3 can still make sense as an inexpensive secondary, music or offline-media phone, but it is generally a poor choice as a primary phone for security-sensitive use.
What was the Xiaomi Mi A3 trying to be?
The Xiaomi Mi A3 was an affordable Android One phone designed to offer a cleaner alternative to Xiaomi’s MIUI-based Redmi devices. The product focused on the features people notice every day—battery life, cameras, an AMOLED screen, expandable storage and a headphone jack—rather than raw benchmark performance.

That positioning explains the phone’s unusual balance. The Mi A3 looked more expensive than its price suggested and included several conveniences that newer budget phones sometimes omit. Xiaomi saved money with a low-resolution display, a mid-range processor and limited connectivity. The result was not a gaming powerhouse, but it was a capable general-purpose phone when new.
The historical value judgment is supported by the contemporary review: NextPit’s September 26, 2019 review listed a UK price of £185 and considered the phone a strong sub-£200 option. That £185 figure is a launch-era UK list price, not a current 2026 used-phone price.
What are the Xiaomi Mi A3’s main strengths and weaknesses?
| Strengths | Compromises |
|---|---|
| Clean Android One interface | Historical, not current, software-support advantage |
| AMOLED contrast and deep blacks | Only 1560 × 720 resolution |
| Good daylight primary-camera results | Weaknesses in low light, digital zoom and video |
| 4,030mAh battery | Every used example has an aged battery |
| microSD expansion and dual-SIM capability | Hybrid tray may prevent simultaneous use of two SIMs and a microSD card |
| 3.5mm headphone jack, IR blaster and USB-C | No NFC, 5G, wireless charging or official IP68 rating |
| Compact, attractive glass-and-metal-style design | Slippery body, fragile glass and mono bottom-firing speaker |
How well does the Mi A3 handle?
The Mi A3 has a glass front and rear protected by Gorilla Glass 5, a metal-style frame and curved edges. Xiaomi lists dimensions of 153.48 × 71.85 × 8.475mm and a weight of 173.8g on its official UK specification page. Those proportions made the phone relatively manageable in one hand compared with many large modern phones, although the 6.088-inch display is not genuinely small.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe glass construction gives the Mi A3 a premium-looking finish, but the back is slippery. The included case is useful rather than ornamental, especially for a used phone whose rear glass may already have weakened from previous drops. The rear panel houses a triple-camera arrangement and should be inspected carefully for cracks or lifting.
Ports and physical features are practical. The Mi A3 has a USB-C charging port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an IR blaster for controlling compatible appliances, a mono bottom-firing speaker and a hybrid SIM/microSD tray. The tray’s exact arrangement means buyers should confirm whether their regional model can use two SIM cards and a microSD card at the same time.
The Mi A3 does not have an official IP68 water-resistance rating. Do not treat a surviving splash or an intact-looking seal as evidence that a used handset is waterproof. Check for liquid damage, corrosion, a loose USB-C port and battery swelling before buying.
Is the Mi A3 display good enough?
The Mi A3’s 6.088-inch AMOLED display is both its most premium-looking feature and its defining compromise. Xiaomi specifies a 19.5:9 panel with a 1560 × 720 resolution and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The AMOLED technology supplies deep blacks, strong contrast and vivid colors, but the approximately 283 pixels-per-inch density is conspicuously low beside Full HD phones.
In practical use, the display’s resolution affects text, icons and fine interface details. Small lettering looks less crisp, fine lines appear softer and the PenTile AMOLED pixel structure can make the resolution compromise easier to notice. A buyer moving from a 1080p phone may find the screen disappointing immediately, even though black levels and contrast look excellent.
The lower resolution also reduces the amount of work the processor and graphics hardware must perform, which helped the phone’s battery endurance. That is a real benefit, but it does not erase the daily visibility of the softer image. The most accurate description is premium AMOLED technology with a budget-oriented resolution.
| Display characteristic | What it means in daily use |
|---|---|
| AMOLED panel | Deep blacks, high contrast and vivid-looking colors |
| 6.088-inch size | Comfortable for video and web use, but not a small-screen phone |
| 1560 × 720 resolution | Less sharp text and interface detail than Full HD displays |
| Approximately 283ppi | Pixel softness can be noticeable to users accustomed to denser screens |
| Gorilla Glass 5 | Some scratch and drop protection, but not immunity from damage |
Does Android One still make the Mi A3 attractive?
Android One made the Mi A3 attractive at launch because the phone ran a near-stock version of Android 9 Pie with less manufacturer customization and less preinstalled software than Xiaomi’s MIUI-based phones. The clean interface was fluid and easy to understand, and the contemporary update proposition was clearer than on many inexpensive Android phones.
According to the 2019 NextPit review, the Android One program promised two years of major Android updates. That was a launch-era promise, not a commitment to indefinite support. Because the Mi A3 launched in 2019, the update window must be treated as historical in 2026.

Do not buy a Mi A3 on the assumption that Android One guarantees current security patches. No device-specific current security-support record is established here, so the safe buying position is to regard the phone as legacy unless you independently confirm the exact software status. Used examples may also have different update histories because of region, carrier, bootloader state or unofficial software.
A clean Android interface remains pleasant, but software cleanliness cannot compensate for an expired or uncertain support cycle. The Mi A3 is therefore unsuitable for buyers who need a currently supported phone for banking, business access or other sensitive activity.
How fast is the Xiaomi Mi A3?
The Mi A3 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 665 processor with an octa-core CPU clocked up to 2.0GHz, an Adreno 610 GPU, LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 storage. Xiaomi’s cited configurations include 4GB of RAM with 64GB or 128GB of storage, although regional options can differ. The official Xiaomi UK specifications document the core hardware and storage options.
The Snapdragon 665 was adequate for calls, messaging, email, web browsing, video streaming and ordinary social apps when the phone was new. App launches were not especially fast, and demanding games could produce pauses or occasional lag. The processor represented a modest improvement rather than a dramatic generational leap over the preceding Mi A2.
The contemporary review reported a Geekbench 5 score of 315 single-core and 1,420 multi-core. Those figures belong to that review’s testing and should not be presented as independently reproduced results or as a prediction of performance from every used handset.
The 128GB version is preferable for most buyers. A 64GB model can work with disciplined storage management, and a microSD card can hold photos, music and video, but external storage does not fully replace the speed and convenience of internal storage for applications. Modern apps and system files also leave less usable space than the original capacity suggests.
Are the Mi A3 cameras any good?
The Mi A3 has a 48MP primary rear camera with an approximately f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP ultrawide camera at approximately f/2.2, a 2MP depth sensor at approximately f/2.4 and a 32MP front camera at approximately f/2.0. Regional specification pages vary in detail, so buyers of imported models should check the exact version.
The primary camera normally produces 12MP photos through pixel binning; the 48MP mode must be selected separately. A 48MP label describes sensor resolution, not flagship image quality. Image processing, shutter speed, lens quality, lighting and stabilization matter just as much.

In good daylight, the main camera produced useful detail, pleasing colors and respectable contrast for its class. The ultrawide camera made the phone more flexible for landscapes, interiors and group scenes, while the depth sensor helped portrait mode separate subjects. Night mode could improve exposure and detail in darker scenes.
The compromises appear as light falls. Low-light photos lose detail, motion blur becomes more likely and the ultrawide camera is substantially weaker than the primary camera. Digital zoom is limited, processing can be slow and video capability and stabilization should not be oversold. The 32MP selfie camera does not automatically produce better selfies than a lower-resolution sensor in a newer phone.
| Camera | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 48MP primary, approximately f/1.8 | Daylight photography and general-purpose shots | Usually outputs 12MP pixel-binned images; low-light detail falls off |
| 8MP ultrawide, approximately f/2.2 | Wider landscapes, rooms and groups | Lower quality than the primary camera, especially in low light |
| 2MP depth sensor, approximately f/2.4 | Portrait-mode subject separation | Does not improve ordinary image detail like a second high-quality camera |
| 32MP front camera, approximately f/2.0 | Selfies and video calls | Resolution alone does not guarantee better image quality |
The fair historical verdict is that the Mi A3 was a good daylight camera phone for its price, not a modern camera specialist. The original NextPit assessment was broadly positive about daylight photography and battery life while noting degradation in evening scenes and the usefulness of night mode.

How long does the Mi A3 battery last?
The Mi A3 has a 4,030mAh typical battery and USB-C charging. The phone supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 and 18W charging, according to Xiaomi’s official India specifications. The charger included in the box varied by market and was not necessarily an 18W charger, so a used listing may not include the equipment needed for the fastest supported charging.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The launch-era review reported more than a day of use and potentially two days under moderate use. The same review reported approximately two hours and 20 minutes to charge with the supplied charger, while an 18W charger was required to use the faster charging capability. Those results describe a new or healthy phone in 2019, not a typical five- to seven-year-old handset in 2026.
Before buying a used Mi A3, check for unexpected shutdowns, rapid percentage drops, excessive heat while charging, battery swelling and whether the phone reaches and maintains a normal charge. A loose USB-C port can be a separate fault. A battery replacement may cost a substantial share of the handset’s value, so compare a repair quote with the cost of a newer supported phone.
What connectivity and useful extras does the Mi A3 have?
The Mi A3 includes 4G LTE, dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, an IR blaster, USB-C, a 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD expansion. Relevant regional models may also support FM radio. Xiaomi’s regional specification page lists the wireless standards, LTE bands, IR remote function and physical ports.
The missing NFC chip is more important than a simple specification checklist suggests. Without NFC, the Mi A3 cannot be relied upon for Google Wallet or other contactless payments, NFC tags, some transit systems or certain pairing and access-control workflows. NFC is a decisive deal-breaker for some buyers and irrelevant to others.

Will the Mi A3 work on a U.S. carrier?
A Xiaomi Mi A3 marked “unlocked” is not automatically compatible with every U.S. carrier. LTE bands differ by regional model, and dependable service also depends on VoLTE configuration and carrier certification. The UK specification lists FDD LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 20 plus TDD bands 38 and 40, while other regional pages differ; the exact model must be checked.
Before buying an imported Mi A3 in the United States, obtain the exact model number and IMEI, compare the device’s LTE bands with the carrier’s requirements, and ask the carrier to confirm VoLTE compatibility. Do not rely on old claims about 3G support, because U.S. 3G networks have been retired. An overseas device may also have different firmware, charger compatibility, warranty coverage or bootloader status.
A dependable return policy is particularly valuable when buying an imported example. Inspect whether the phone has a replaced screen or battery, whether the bootloader is unlocked and whether the seller can document the device’s network history.
Is the Mi A3 fingerprint reader reliable?
The Mi A3’s under-display optical fingerprint reader is one of its weakest everyday features. The original review criticized inconsistent recognition, and many users may find a PIN or face unlock more convenient.
Face unlock uses the front-facing camera and should not be treated as equivalent to secure biometric authentication. A PIN is the safer fallback for sensitive access. When inspecting a used handset, register several fingerprints, test recognition from normal angles and check whether a screen protector interferes with the sensor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Xiaomi Mi A3 worth buying in 2026?
The Xiaomi Mi A3 is generally not worth buying as a primary phone in 2026 unless the price is exceptionally low and the buyer accepts substantial compromises. The original hardware remains functional, but software age, battery degradation, missing NFC, no 5G and uncertain carrier compatibility outweigh the phone’s historical strengths for most people.

| Gaming phone | Avoid | Snapdragon 665 performance is adequate for ordinary use, not demanding gaming |
| Android enthusiast or modding project | Possible with caution | Depends on device-specific software and community support; not a safe mainstream recommendation |
A newer replacement phone is the better direction for buyers who need current updates, NFC, 5G, reliable carrier support or a sharper display. A current Google Pixel generally prioritizes a clean Google software experience and stronger update support, although Pixel phones commonly lack microSD expansion and a headphone jack. A current Samsung Galaxy A-series phone generally offers broader carrier availability and longer-term support. A newer Xiaomi phone may provide a larger battery and newer Android version, but it will typically use Xiaomi’s MIUI or HyperOS experience rather than Android One. Exact model and price comparisons require current shopping research.
For buyers who keep the Mi A3, an 18W-compatible USB-C charger may be more appropriate than an expensive high-wattage charger whose additional capacity the phone cannot use. A protective case and compatible screen protector are sensible for the slippery glass body, but neither accessory fixes the missing NFC, low-resolution display or obsolete software. Screen-protector compatibility matters because some protectors can worsen the already inconsistent fingerprint reader.

What should you check before buying a used Mi A3?
- Confirm the exact regional model. Check the model number, LTE bands, IMEI, VoLTE support and carrier compatibility before paying, especially in the United States.
- Check the software state. Record the installed Android version and security-patch date, and do not assume Android One means current updates.
- Test the battery. Look for rapid percentage loss, shutdowns, heat, swelling and charging that stops or disconnects.
- Inspect the USB-C port. Confirm that the cable fits firmly and that the phone charges consistently.
- Test the fingerprint sensor. Register fingerprints and try unlocking repeatedly with and without any screen protector.
- Inspect the display. Look for dead pixels, burn-in, discoloration and touch areas that fail to respond.
- Test every camera. Check the primary, ultrawide, depth-assisted portrait mode, front camera, flash and video recording.
- Check the physical body. Look for cracked Gorilla Glass, frame dents, liquid damage and signs of battery swelling.
- Verify storage and SIM behavior. Confirm whether the phone is the 64GB or 128GB version and whether the hybrid tray meets your needs.
- Use a returnable purchase channel. Imported or refurbished phones may contain replacement parts, regional firmware or an unlocked bootloader that was not disclosed.
Why was the Mi A3 more capable than its processor suggested?
The “more capable than you might think” description is justified by the phone’s combination of practical features rather than by raw speed. The Snapdragon 665 was ordinary, but the Mi A3 added AMOLED contrast, Android One, a useful primary camera, an ultrawide camera, a large battery, microSD expansion, dual-SIM support, USB-C, an IR blaster and a headphone jack in a relatively compact body.
That combination made the phone feel complete in ways that a specification sheet could miss. A user could store media on a microSD card, connect wired headphones, control a television, take wide-angle photos and use a clean Android interface without paying for a premium device. The 720p display, unreliable fingerprint sensor and missing NFC were not hidden details, however; those compromises could be unacceptable even at the original £185 price depending on the buyer’s priorities.

No, the Xiaomi Mi A3 does not include NFC. The lack of NFC prevents dependable use of contactless payments and other NFC-based features such as tags, some transit systems and certain access-control workflows.
Does the Xiaomi Mi A3 support 5G?
No, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is a 4G LTE phone based on the Snapdragon 665 platform. Regional LTE bands and VoLTE support must still be checked before using an imported model on a particular carrier.
Is the Xiaomi Mi A3 still supported in 2026?
The Xiaomi Mi A3’s Android One update promise was a historical two-year launch-era commitment, not indefinite support. The phone should be treated as legacy in 2026 unless an independently verified, device-specific support record shows otherwise.
Can the Xiaomi Mi A3 use a microSD card?
Yes, the Xiaomi Mi A3 supports microSD expansion, but its hybrid SIM/microSD tray may prevent simultaneous use of two SIM cards and a microSD card depending on the regional model. The 128GB internal-storage version is preferable for most used buyers.
Is the Xiaomi Mi A3 good for gaming?
The Xiaomi Mi A3 is adequate for ordinary apps and light gaming, but it is not a demanding-gaming phone. The Snapdragon 665 can show slower loading and occasional lag in heavier games, and newer supported phones offer substantially better performance.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Xiaomi Mi A3 was a genuinely well-rounded budget phone in 2019, and its practical feature list explains why it seemed more capable than its processor suggested. In 2026, buy one only as a very inexpensive, tested secondary or offline-media device. Avoid it as a primary phone if you need current security updates, NFC, 5G, reliable fingerprint unlocking, dependable U.S. carrier compatibility or a healthy battery.
