There is no universal Xfinity WiFi password. Your gateway’s WiFi name and password are usually printed on its label if they have not been changed. The password for the gateway’s Admin Tool is a separate credential, so the WiFi password may not let you sign in at 10.0.0.1.

Which Xfinity password do you need?

What you’re trying to do Credential to use Where to find or manage it
Connect a phone, computer, or other device to WiFi The WiFi network password (also called the network key) Check the gateway’s side or bottom label if the defaults have not been changed, or view the WiFi details in the Xfinity app. Xfinity’s WiFi name and password instructions.
Sign in to the gateway Admin Tool Username: admin. The password depends on the gateway setup and whether Admin Tool access or its password has been changed. Open http://10.0.0.1 from a device connected to your home network. Depending on the setup, the password may be on the gateway label or one you established when enabling access or changing the login. See Xfinity’s Admin Tool credential instructions.

Do not assume the two passwords are interchangeable, and do not rely on an old, universal default such as “password.” Xfinity’s instructions describe setup-dependent Admin Tool credentials, not one password that applies to every gateway.

Find your current WiFi name and password

If you only need to connect a device, look for the gateway label first. It gives the factory WiFi name and password when those defaults have not been changed. If someone has changed them, use the Xfinity app to view the current WiFi details, where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xfinity says most gateways require customers to change the default WiFi credentials during installation. If yours still uses the label defaults, changing them is a sensible security step. The label does not reveal credentials that were changed later.

Change the WiFi name or password

The available method depends on your gateway and network configuration. Xfinity documents the app for managing WiFi details, while the Admin Tool is an option for supported rented XB2 and XB3 gateways. XB6 and newer gateways, WiFi Extenders, and WiFi Intelligence configurations may require the app; in those configurations, the Admin Tool may not manage the network name or password. Check your model and the current options in the app before following a particular menu path.

  1. Open the Xfinity app and go to the WiFi details or network-editing flow available for your gateway.
  2. Update the network name, password, or both, then save the change.
  3. Reconnect your phones, computers, TVs, smart-home devices, and other clients using the new credentials. Devices that still have the old password saved will not connect until their WiFi settings are updated.

For a supported rented XB2 or XB3, you can also use the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1 while connected to your home network. Follow Xfinity’s Admin Tool instructions. If the settings you need are unavailable there, use the app instead.

Sign in to the Admin Tool

Connect to your home network and visit http://10.0.0.1. Enter admin as the username. Use the applicable Admin Tool password: on some setups it is printed on the gateway label; on others it is the password created when Admin Tool access was enabled or the login was changed. The precise credential depends on the gateway and its configuration.

Choose a WiFi security mode that fits your devices

Xfinity documents WPA2, WPA3-Personal, and WPA3-Personal-Transition. It describes WPA2 as using AES rather than TKIP. Its guidance characterizes WPA3-Personal as using Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE), with stronger resistance to password guessing and offline dictionary attacks and forward secrecy. These are Xfinity’s explanations of the modes, not independent comparative test results.

Security mode Compatibility to consider When it may fit
WPA2 Useful for devices that do not support WPA3. When older or smart-home devices cannot connect using WPA3 options.
WPA3-Personal Requires WPA3-compatible devices; older clients may fail to connect. When all the devices that need WiFi support it.
WPA3-Personal-Transition Allows WPA3-capable devices to use WPA3 while WPA2 legacy devices connect using WPA2. When you want a WPA3 option but need to retain compatibility with older devices.

Xfinity’s documented route for changing the security mode is the app, with the Admin Tool also available in supported configurations. Check compatibility before choosing WPA3-only, especially if older or Internet of Things (IoT) devices are on your network. Do not set the network to open: Xfinity says an open network has no security settings and lets anyone within range connect without a password, and it does not recommend that mode. See Xfinity’s WiFi security-mode guidance.

Recover access before resetting the gateway

If you cannot remember a changed WiFi password, check the Xfinity app for the current details. If you cannot sign in to the Admin Tool, use the available access setup or account recovery options for your gateway before resetting it. The WiFi and Admin Tool credentials serve different purposes, so recovering one does not necessarily recover the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A factory reset is a last resort: Xfinity says it restores the gateway’s defaults and disconnects WiFi devices. Its instructions call for pressing the recessed reset button with a pen or an unfolded paperclip; no special tool is needed. After the reset, devices must reconnect, and you can use the gateway label credentials before setting new ones. Follow Xfinity’s Admin Tool and reset guidance and WiFi credential guidance for the applicable steps.

Connect without typing the WiFi password

For a supported device, WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) can connect using a push-button or PIN method instead of manually entering the network key. It is an optional connection method, not a way to recover or change the password. If WPS does not work, use the network name and password shown in the app or on the unchanged gateway label. See Xfinity’s WPS instructions.
