Xbox mode is a controller-optimized, full-screen gaming interface for Windows 11—not a way to turn a PC into an Xbox console. Microsoft announced that its gradual rollout to Windows 11 PCs in select markets began on April 30, 2026, so it is no longer a feature expected “next month.” It brings games together for browsing and launching, while keeping the option to return to the Windows desktop.
What Xbox mode does—and what it does not do
Xbox mode puts a console-style interface over Windows 11. Its full-screen layout is designed for controller navigation, making it easier to browse a game library and open recently played titles without working through the regular desktop. You can switch back to the Windows desktop when you want to use the PC normally.
The mode is a Windows interface and game-launching layer, not a conversion of PC hardware into an Xbox console. Microsoft describes it as preserving Windows’ openness. It does not establish that the feature runs Xbox console versions of games or improves frame rates.
When Xbox mode is available
Microsoft said the rollout to Windows 11 PCs in select markets began on April 30, 2026. The announcement includes laptops, desktops and tablets, and Microsoft also describes availability on Windows 11 handhelds. Expansion is gradual, so the announcement does not mean the feature is available in every country or on every eligible device.

Microsoft Support lists Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2 and says Xbox mode is available only in supported markets. The support guidance does not establish broader availability on earlier Windows versions. For an individual device, check the available Xbox mode setting and Microsoft’s current regional support information.
How to open Xbox mode
On other Windows 11 PC form factors
- Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Use the Xbox mode setting to enable or enter the experience, if it is available for your PC and market.
From Windows
Microsoft lists Game Bar, Task View and the Win+F11 keyboard shortcut as entry points. The interface is built for controller use, but these Windows entry points mean a controller is not the only way to reach it.

Which games and libraries appear?
Xbox mode provides an aggregated library that includes the Xbox Game Pass catalog and installed games from leading PC storefronts. Microsoft’s Windows gaming guide says the Xbox PC app can connect Game Pass, purchased games and installed games from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG and other storefronts. That makes the experience broader than a Game Pass-only catalog, but it does not mean every game from every store will appear or launch through the interface.
Game Pass is not a requirement for Xbox mode. It is one source of games the interface can surface; installed games and games purchased through supported PC storefronts can also be part of the library. Microsoft’s May 20, 2026 Windows guide describes Game Pass as offering “hundreds of games,” but catalog size, titles, features and regional availability vary over time and by plan and platform.

Microsoft’s guide describes both downloaded games and cloud gaming options. Those are distinct ways to play: cloud access depends on the applicable Game Pass plan, supported region and service availability, while downloaded games run on the PC. The fact that Xbox mode can show a Game Pass catalog does not mean every title is downloadable or available through cloud play on every plan.

What to check if Xbox mode is missing
- Windows version: Confirm that the PC is on Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2, the versions listed by Microsoft Support.
- Market availability: Microsoft describes supported markets and a gradual rollout, not universal availability. A missing option may reflect regional or rollout eligibility.
- Device type: Microsoft announced rollout across Windows 11 laptops, desktops and tablets, and describes handheld availability. The support page gives the Settings route for other PC form factors.
- Library expectations: An installed game from a leading storefront may be surfaced, but an aggregated interface is not a promise that every title or store is supported.
What Microsoft has confirmed—and what remains unproven
Microsoft’s March 11, 2026 Windows Experience Blog previewed an April rollout. Xbox Wire then reported on April 30 that rollout was beginning in select markets. Microsoft Support identifies Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 and supported markets, while Microsoft’s May 20 Windows gaming guide explains how the PC Xbox app can connect games and Game Pass.

Those sources establish a full-screen, controller-optimized interface and a gradual rollout; they do not establish worldwide availability, a universal performance gain, or access to every Xbox console game. Xbox mode is best understood as a more console-like way to navigate Windows PC gaming, with the desktop still available when needed.
