Xbox Cloud Gaming streams games to your PC, so you generally do not need a gaming-class processor or graphics card just to play from the cloud. You do need a supported browser or Windows app, a reliable internet connection, an eligible account and game, and usually a compatible controller. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app lists Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or later, 150 MB of storage, and a 720p display as its minimums; those are app requirements, not a promise of smooth streaming or the hardware requirements for installing PC games.
What you need for Xbox Cloud Gaming on a PC
- A supported Windows PC or other supported device, in a region where cloud gaming is available.
- Either a supported browser at xbox.com/play or the Xbox PC app on a supported Windows PC.
- An internet connection. Microsoft’s guidance is 10 Mbps minimum download speed; it recommends 20 Mbps for best performance on PCs and tablets.
- An eligible subscription and a cloud-playable game, except for select free-to-play games available with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
- A compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB for most console cloud games. Select games support touch controls instead.
These are cloud-streaming requirements: the game runs remotely and its video and audio stream to your device. They are different from the system requirements for downloading and running a PC game locally.
Choose a browser or the Xbox PC app

Microsoft’s listed app requirements were checked on October 7, 2026. They describe the Xbox PC app baseline. Microsoft says game system requirements vary, so do not treat those figures as the requirements for every locally installed game or as a guarantee of cloud-streaming performance.
Use a browser
- Open a supported browser and go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the game or eligible subscription.
- Choose a game available for cloud play in your region and start streaming.
Use the Xbox PC app
- Confirm that your PC runs Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or higher and has a 720p display.
- Install or open the Xbox PC app, then sign in with the account that has access to the game or subscription.
- If the app cannot be used while your PC is in Windows S mode, switch out of S mode as Microsoft’s guidance requires.
- Choose a cloud-playable game and start streaming.
Microsoft’s cited pages do not state a minimum CPU, GPU, RAM, or dedicated graphics card for browser-based cloud play. A powerful gaming PC is therefore not a stated prerequisite for streaming, but the app baseline should not be confused with the needs of a game you install and run locally.

Internet speed and connection quality
Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ, checked October 7, 2026, gives 10 Mbps as the minimum download speed for Wi-Fi or LTE, says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and identifies 20 Mbps as best performance guidance for PCs and tablets. These figures are guidance, not a guarantee of low-latency or uninterrupted play. Microsoft says performance also depends on your connection, location, device, and other factors.
- Use a stable connection; where possible, connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- If play is choppy, check whether your connection can sustain Microsoft’s recommended speed and whether other network activity is competing for bandwidth.
- Remember that streaming uses your internet service, so your ISP’s data charges or limits may apply.
Cloud-streamed games can also have limitations involving video resolution, audio outputs, and cloud-save storage. The pages cited do not specify a single performance result that applies to every PC, network, or location.

Controller and game availability
For console games streamed from the cloud, Microsoft generally requires a compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB. You do not need a particular controller model. Select games support touch controls, so check the individual game if you want to play without a controller.

Subscription and region requirements
Microsoft’s current FAQ lists Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate as eligible subscriptions for cloud gaming. It also says select free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Cloud gaming is not available everywhere, and supported devices and titles vary. Check Microsoft’s supported regions and current account and game details before relying on access; cloud playtime limits also vary by plan.

How to tell whether a problem is a PC requirement
- The app will not install or open: Verify Windows version, available storage, display baseline, and whether Windows S mode is preventing app use.
- The game will not launch for your account: Check whether the title supports cloud play, whether your plan or account provides access, and whether cloud gaming is supported in your region.
- The stream stutters or feels delayed: Check connection speed and stability, Wi-Fi band, device, and location. Meeting a speed figure alone does not guarantee good performance.
- You cannot control the game: Connect a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller, or check whether that game supports touch controls.
- A locally installed game performs poorly: Cloud-streaming guidance does not replace that game’s local PC system requirements.
