Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Short answer: X and Bluesky both let you attach photos to posts, but their published rules describe different things. X documents post attachments, video-upload limits by account tier and upload surface, and places to browse media you have posted. Bluesky’s protocol tutorial describes image files uploaded separately as blobs and referenced by posts. Neither service’s cited documentation establishes a directly comparable account-wide storage quota or a guarantee that posted media will remain available indefinitely.
At a glance: posting media is not the same as storing it
| Question | X | Bluesky |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and GIFs | Up to four total media items can be attached to a post. X Help Center: How to post photos or GIFs on X and How to Post | The cited protocol tutorial documents up to four images per post, with a 2 MB limit for each image. Bluesky Protocol Services: Creating a post |
| Video | Limits vary by account tier and upload surface. The general video help page lists non-Premium uploads up to 140 seconds and 512 MB; it describes longer Premium uploads, with limits that differ from the Media Studio documentation. X Help Center: How to share and watch videos on X | The cited tutorial covers images, not a general video-upload limit. It does not establish a video limit comparable to X’s. |
| Finding posted media | A profile’s media timeline displays photos, videos, and GIFs attached to posts. Media Studio has a separate library view. Neither is documented as a personal backup guarantee. X Help Center: About media timelines in profiles and Media Studio Library | The tutorial explains image blobs and post references; it does not describe a user-facing archive guarantee. |
| Account-wide quota or retention promise | Not established by the cited documentation. | Not established by the cited documentation; choosing a PDS does not by itself establish a universal quota or retention period. AT Protocol Team: Network Account Management and Bluesky API reference |
How much video can I upload to X?
There is no single figure that applies to every X upload route. The general video help page describes limits for web and mobile posting, while Media Studio has its own specifications. Keep those surfaces separate when comparing limits.
Regular posting and Premium
X’s general video help page lists video uploads for non-Premium accounts up to 140 seconds and 512 MB. It describes longer uploads for Premium accounts, but the stated allowance varies by surface: the general page describes some uploads shorter than four hours and up to 16 GB, while other X Premium documentation describes roughly three hours and up to 8 GB for specified surfaces. Check the help page for the route you intend to use rather than treating the largest figure as a universal limit. X Help Center: How to share and watch videos on X
Media Studio has separate specifications
X’s Media Studio Library documentation sets a maximum video file size of 8 GB for that feature and explicitly says its directions do not apply to desktop, mobile, or API uploads. A Media Studio limit should not be substituted for the limits on those other upload routes. X Help Center: Media Studio Library

How many photos can I put in a post?
X: four total media items
X allows up to four total media items in a post, including photos and GIFs. The four-item ceiling is a post attachment limit, not a statement about how many photos an account can keep. X Help Center: How to Post and How to post photos or GIFs on X
Bluesky: up to four images, 2 MB each
The Bluesky protocol tutorial documents up to four images in a post, with each image limited to 2 MB. That is a per-image posting constraint, not a total account-storage allowance. The cited tutorial does not establish a comparable general video limit. Bluesky Protocol Services: Creating a post

Does Bluesky store images in the post?
Not as inline image bytes in the post record, according to Bluesky’s protocol tutorial. The image is uploaded as a blob, and the post record includes a reference to that blob. This explains how an image is represented in the posting flow; it does not specify how long the blob must remain available or how much storage an account receives. Bluesky Protocol Services: Creating a post
Bluesky accounts use a Personal Data Server (PDS) as part of the AT Protocol account model. The account-management documentation describes hosting choices that include independent or self-hosted options. That flexibility is about where an account’s data is hosted; it does not, on its own, promise indefinite media retention, a fixed quota across providers, or effortless migration. Where do my old photos go on X?
X’s profile media timeline displays photos, videos, and GIFs attached to posts. It is a way to browse posted media, not a separate personal archive. X says that deleting a post removes its media item from the profile media timeline. X Help Center: About media timelines in profiles
Media Studio provides a library view for that feature, with its own upload specifications. The existence of a library view does not establish that it functions as a backup for all media uploaded through X or guarantees continued access. X Help Center: Media Studio Library

What the documentation does—and does not—say about storage
The published details are not an apples-to-apples storage comparison. X describes user-facing upload routes, post attachments, a profile media timeline, and a Media Studio library. Bluesky’s tutorial describes blob uploads and references in post records, while its account documentation describes PDS hosting. Those facts explain posting and some ways to find or host media, but the cited sources do not provide directly comparable total account-storage quotas or a common long-term retention policy.
