Unmention is X’s name for the “Leave this conversation” control. It removes your handle link from a specific conversation, stops further mentions of you in that thread, and turns off notifications for it while leaving the conversation visible. X’s current Help documentation lists the feature on iOS, Android, and X.com, but not X Pro; it also says leaving cannot currently be undone. See the X Help instructions.
What “Unmention” does
Leaving a conversation is a thread-level privacy and notification control. It does not delete the post, remove other participants, or hide the thread from you.
- Your username or handle link is hidden from the conversation.
- People cannot mention you again in that conversation.
- You stop receiving notifications about that conversation.
- You can still open and read the thread.
- X currently says the action cannot be undone.
X introduced the feature under the name “Unmention.” Its 2022 product announcement explained that the menu label would be “Leave this Conversation” and described the rollout from some web users to everyone, including mobile. That announcement is historical; use the current Help page for today’s availability and interface instructions: X’s Unmention announcement.
How to untag yourself from a conversation
From the Notifications timeline
- Open X and go to Notifications.
- Select the Mentions tab.
- Find the post connected to the unwanted conversation.
- Open that post’s More menu.
- Choose Leave this conversation.
- Confirm when X asks you to leave.
From the conversation itself
- Open any post in the conversation.
- Open the menu at the top of the thread.
- Select Leave this conversation.
- Confirm the action.
These two routes and the resulting changes are documented by X at How to post X replies and mentions. Menu wording can vary slightly by app version, but the action is the same.

What happens after you leave
| Effect | Result |
|---|---|
| Your handle in the thread | The handle link is hidden. |
| New mentions in that thread | Other participants cannot mention you again in that conversation. |
| Notifications | You no longer receive notifications about the conversation. |
| Viewing the thread | The conversation remains viewable to you. |
| Reversing the action | X says leaving cannot currently be undone. |
Because the control is permanent according to the current Help page, check that you are acting on the intended thread before confirming.
Where Unmention is available
X’s current Help documentation lists iOS, Android, and X.com as supported surfaces. It specifically says the feature is not available on X Pro. Availability and labels are software details that can change, so an account may show a slightly different menu after an app update.

Unmention versus mute, block, and notification filters
Choose the control according to the scope of the problem: one conversation, one account, or a broader class of notifications.
| Control | Scope | Handle in the thread | Can the person mention you again there? | Notification effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leave this conversation (Unmention) | One conversation | Hidden | No | Stops notifications from that conversation |
| Mute a conversation | One conversation | Not removed by the mute control | Not prevented by the mute control | Suppresses related conversation notifications |
| Mute an account | One account | Not an unmention action | Not prevented; X says mentions from that account can still notify you | Reduces what you see from the account, with the stated mention limitation |
| Block | One account | Not a thread-level removal | Applies broader account interaction limits | Changes the blocked account’s ability to engage with your posts |
| Quality filters, muted words, and advanced filters | A category of notifications or content | Not changed in a specific thread | Not a conversation-specific prevention control | Adjust what reaches your Notifications timeline |
For details on account controls, see Customizing your X experience. X’s notification options are described in X Notifications timeline and quality filters.

Which option should you use?
Use Unmention when one thread is the problem
Choose Leave this conversation when you want your identity link detached from a particular thread and want to prevent additional mentions there without taking action against an entire account.
Use mute when you only need fewer alerts
Mute is appropriate when the conversation is noisy but you do not need the handle link removed or future mentions prevented. Muting does not provide Unmention’s identity and mention controls.
Use block for an account-level boundary
Blocking addresses interaction with a specific account across X rather than leaving one conversation. It is broader than Unmention and should be reserved for situations that require that wider boundary.
Use filters for recurring notification categories
Quality filters, muted words, and advanced filters are better when the unwanted alerts share a topic, phrase, or notification pattern across multiple conversations. They do not detach your handle from an individual thread.

Common questions about “Leave this conversation”
Is Unmention the same as deleting a mention?
No. Leaving hides your handle link in that conversation and blocks future mentions in the same thread; it does not delete the conversation.
Can I still read a conversation after leaving?
Yes. X says the thread remains viewable even though your handle link is hidden and its notifications stop.
Why can’t I find the option in X Pro?
X’s current Help page lists the feature for iOS, Android, and X.com, but not X Pro. Use one of the listed surfaces if the menu is unavailable in X Pro.
