Microsoft replaced that removal plan with a decision to continue supporting driver-update synchronization to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). The capability is still marked deprecated, however, so Microsoft may remove it in a future release.
What changed
Microsoft’s June 28, 2024 announcement said, “Our plan is to deprecate WSUS driver synchronization on April 18, 2025.” That statement led many administrators to expect that WSUS would no longer import driver updates after that date.
On April 7, 2025, Microsoft reversed the immediate deadline. Paul Reed wrote, “Based on your valuable feedback, we’ll continue supporting driver update synchronization to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) servers.” Microsoft updated the original announcement on April 8 with an editor’s note confirming that the new decision overrides the earlier plan.
The practical distinction is important: the April 18, 2025 shutdown did not occur, but the feature remains deprecated. Deprecation means Microsoft is no longer actively developing the capability and retains the option to remove it in a later release.

Can you still synchronize drivers with WSUS?
Yes. Existing WSUS driver synchronization workflows can continue, subject to the normal requirements of your Windows Server and WSUS deployment. Do not schedule an emergency cutover solely because of the April 18, 2025 date.
Continuation is not a long-term guarantee. Because the function is deprecated, include it in lifecycle reviews and test a replacement path before Microsoft announces another change. Microsoft has not published a new removal date or a product-by-product replacement scorecard.

What the original plan would have meant
For on-premises environments, Microsoft said drivers would remain available through the Microsoft Update Catalog but could no longer be imported into WSUS after deprecation. That catalog therefore remains a relevant acquisition source even while WSUS synchronization continues.
The 2024 Microsoft Windows IT Pro Blog survey reported that 34% of participants used WSUS to synchronize drivers, while 8% expressed concern about the proposed change. Those are survey results from Microsoft’s announcement, not a measurement of every WSUS installation.

Actions for WSUS administrators now
- Correct internal dates. Remove April 18, 2025 as a shutdown deadline from runbooks, change records and compliance guidance.
- Record the deprecated status. Keep WSUS driver synchronization operating, but assign an owner and review Microsoft lifecycle and servicing announcements regularly.
- Inventory dependencies. List synchronized driver categories, approval rules, test rings, disconnected-device requirements, Configuration Manager integrations and any third-party catalog feeds.
- Measure operational windows. Document how often catalogs are synchronized, how long validation takes and when approved drivers reach production. Driver-delivery cadence and approval delays affect every replacement design.
- Build a fallback workflow. Test Microsoft Update Catalog procedures and at least one cloud-based driver-management approach before a future removal is announced.
- Preserve evidence. Keep records of driver versions, approvals and deployment outcomes so that a migration does not remove your audit trail.
What could replace WSUS driver synchronization?
Microsoft’s follow-up notes that many organizations were already moving to cloud-based driver services. The right option depends on network architecture and governance rather than on a single universally recommended product.

Questions to answer before choosing an alternative
- Which devices must receive drivers in networks with no direct internet access?
- Who approves a driver, and how many test stages are required before broad deployment?
- Can the process block a problematic release and roll back to a known-good package?
- Does the catalog cover your hardware vendors, operating-system versions and server models?
- How will packages integrate with Configuration Manager or another endpoint-management system?
- What are the recurring license, bandwidth, storage and administrator time costs?
- How will you retain approval history and deployment evidence?
Planning for a possible future removal
Start with a parallel pilot rather than a forced cutover. Select a representative set of hardware, including devices in disconnected segments, and run the candidate workflow through download, validation, approval, deployment and rollback. Compare its delivery time and administrative effort with your current WSUS process.

Keep WSUS as the production path until the pilot meets your security, connectivity and change-control requirements. A future Microsoft announcement could change technical prerequisites, so revalidate the plan against the applicable Windows Server and management-product documentation when a removal date is published.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will drivers already synchronized to WSUS disappear?
Microsoft’s correction addresses continued synchronization and does not announce deletion of driver packages already stored in your WSUS environment. Retain normal backups and approval records, and watch future servicing notices for any storage or compatibility changes.

Should an organization with a disconnected network move immediately?
Not solely because of the superseded April 18, 2025 date. Continue the tested WSUS process while piloting an offline Microsoft Update Catalog workflow or another option that explicitly supports your disconnected segments.
The Bottom Line
WSUS driver synchronization is still usable after April 18, 2025, but it remains deprecated. Keep the current service running, remove the obsolete deadline from your plans, and validate a catalog- or cloud-based fallback before Microsoft sets a future removal date.
