You can write NUnit tests for reusable driver logic and run them on Windows, then validate the driver in a Crestron Home system. But the available documentation does not establish that NUnit runs on a Crestron Home processor—or that one test assembly can run unchanged in both environments. Treat this as two complementary stages: automated tests on Windows and platform integration testing on Crestron Home.
Can NUnit run on a Crestron Home processor?
Do not assume so. NUnit documents test execution in supported .NET or .NET Framework environments, while Crestron’s Home testing guidance describes loading and exercising a driver in a configured Home system. The cited Crestron instructions do not document an NUnit runner on a Home processor. The processor models named for running Crestron Home driver packages are not evidence of NUnit support.
A practical goal is to test shared logic with NUnit on Windows and then verify the packaged driver against Crestron Home hardware and software. Whether a particular assembly or project can target both environments depends on its framework, SDK, and the processor software in use; confirm those requirements before claiming one executable test suite works in both.
What each test stage verifies
| Stage | Where it runs | What it is suited to verify | Main requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automated NUnit tests | Windows with a compatible .NET test runner | Reusable, deterministic logic such as protocol parsing, state transformations, and validation rules | An NUnit test project targeting a supported .NET or .NET Framework runtime, plus the appropriate NUnit adapter and Microsoft test SDK for the documented dotnet test workflow |
| Crestron Home integration validation | A configured Crestron Home system and processor | Driver packaging, device configuration, platform behavior, command traffic, responses, routing, and processor logs | A supported Crestron Home setup, applicable devices and driver package, and access to Crestron Toolbox |
This division is an engineering approach based on the separate execution requirements of NUnit and Crestron’s documented Home workflow, not a promise of a shared test runner. Unit tests can exercise isolated cases repeatedly; processor testing checks integration in the target system.

How to set up NUnit tests for Windows
Keep the test project distinct from the code under test
Where the driver architecture permits, put platform-independent behavior—such as parsing, validation, and state conversion—in code that a Windows test project can reference. This separation is a practical design recommendation, not a project layout prescribed by Crestron. A .NET Standard library may be referenced as code under test, but it cannot itself serve as the NUnit test project: the test project must target .NET or .NET Framework.
Add the test dependencies and run the tests
Use the NUnit project template, or add NUnit, NUnit3TestAdapter, and Microsoft.NET.Test.Sdk references to a compatible test project. NUnit documents dotnet test as a command-line way to run tests for the supported project setup. The adapter connects NUnit tests to the test platform; the target framework and runtime still have to be compatible with the Windows environment.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose a target framework based on the project and the actual Windows build environment. A framework mismatch can prevent the test assembly from loading, so do not assume that installing an arbitrary .NET runtime will make a differently targeted project runnable. Check NUnit’s current setup guidance and package versions when creating or updating the project; versions shown in its documentation are examples, not a reason to freeze dependencies indefinitely.
How to validate a driver in Crestron Home
Prepare the Home system and load the package
- Configure a Crestron Home system with the applicable devices and the driver package you intend to validate.
- Side-load the custom driver package before adding its corresponding device. Crestron’s instructions describe transferring the package by FTP or File Manager into
UserThirdPartyDriversImport. For IR drivers, use Device Learner as directed by Crestron. - Add the corresponding device and exercise the driver’s functions in the configured system. Verify expected commands, responses, state changes, and source routing against the behavior the driver is supposed to provide.
Crestron identifies CP4-R, DIN-AP4-R, and MC4-R as processors for running driver packages in a Crestron Home environment. That identifies Home hardware for driver validation; it does not establish that any of those processors can execute NUnit tests.

Inspect output and errors
- Use Crestron Toolbox to establish a Telnet connection to the system and open Text Console.
- Enable program commands, then issue
ERRto view error logs and messages. - Exercise each relevant driver function while monitoring the output. Check for unexpected errors and confirm that observed command traffic and state updates match the expected behavior.
Crestron’s guidance also calls out checking volume ramping when using hardware keys. Include that behavior when it applies to the driver and system configuration.
Reimport a changed driver safely
For an iterative test cycle, Crestron says to remove instances of the old driver and reboot through the Crestron Home Setup UI before importing the changed package. Its instructions specifically warn against using the reboot console command for this reimport procedure.

Check project compatibility before promising one suite
The relevant question is not simply whether the code is written in C#. NUnit’s runner requires a compatible test-project target and runtime; the Crestron driver must also meet the requirements of its SDK and target environment. Crestron’s Drivers SDK provides libraries and files for drivers used in Crestron Home and other Crestron environments, but that does not mean every driver project has the same framework target or can produce one executable assembly for every platform.
- Record the test project’s target framework and verify that the Windows machine has a compatible runtime.
- Check the Crestron SDK and framework requirements for the driver and the specific Crestron Home software in use.
- Keep NUnit execution on Windows unless documentation for the exact processor and software versions explicitly supports an NUnit runner there.
- Use Crestron Home testing for the integration behavior that a Windows unit-test runner cannot establish, including device interaction, routing, package loading, and processor output.
Crestron’s Drivers SDK setup page identifies Visual Studio 2019 and the .NET desktop development workload for residential or 4-Series development. Treat those as facts from that setup guidance, not as a universal requirement for every current project; verify current SDK documentation for the versions you use. For Home solution work, the same page lists CP4-R, DIN-AP4-R, and MC4-R as Home processors.

When Crestron Home is not the target platform
Crestron’s testing overview says Home testing should be performed for drivers supported within Crestron Home. For platform-agnostic drivers, it describes SIMPL as the most robust test platform. Choose the validation environment that matches the driver’s intended support rather than treating Home processor testing as universal for all Crestron drivers.
