To get a useful WP Engine speed test, measure the same public page under comparable conditions, record whether each request was served from cache, and distinguish a one-time page test from WP Engine’s longer-term Performance Insights. A cache miss and a cache hit are different results—not repeat measurements of the same condition.

How to run a WP Engine speed test

  1. Choose one representative URL. Test the specific landing page, product page, or article you care about; a homepage result does not describe every page on the site. Keep the URL and page content fixed across runs.
  2. Run an external page test and save the result. Use a browser-based page-speed testing service. Record its name, the test time, and the device or test location if the service provides them. Treat the result as a snapshot of that URL under that setup.
  3. Record the cache condition. Note whether you purged cache before the run or whether the response appears to have come from cache. WP Engine documents cURL as one way to inspect response headers. In the relevant cache layer, an x-cache value of HIT indicates the request was served from cache; MISS means it was not served from that layer. A miss and a hit should not be combined as if they were identical runs. See WP Engine’s caching documentation.
  4. Repeat under comparable conditions. Keep the URL, test tool, device or location, and cache state as similar as practical. If a test follows a cache purge, label it accordingly; compare it with another run in the same state rather than silently mixing it with cached requests.
  5. Check platform trends separately. Review WP Engine Performance Insights for environment-level context such as latency, cache hit ratio, errors, and slow pages. Those figures answer a different question from an external page test.
  6. Change one likely cause at a time. If you make a performance change, test it in a staging or development environment where practical, then rerun the same page test with matching conditions. Avoid changing multiple factors at once, which makes it harder to identify what affected the result.

Why WP Engine speed test results vary

“Page speed” is not one fixed property of a site. A test result depends on the requested URL, its content, test location and device, the testing service’s method, the time of the run, and which caches served the request. Keep those conditions with every result so that a comparison does not confuse a changed setup with a changed site.

A fresh request and a cached hit are different conditions

WP Engine documents several caching layers: server-side Varnish, network or CDN caching, optional object caching, and browser caching. Its support documentation says the default page-cache expiration is 10 minutes; Edge Full Page Cache can store HTML at Cloudflare’s CDN when the applicable network service is enabled; and static assets have a default 365-day browser-cache expiration on its platform. These are documented defaults, not a guarantee that every request takes the same route or receives the same cache response. WP Engine explains its caching layers and defaults.

A page may not be cached on its first request. WP Engine says several consecutive cURL requests may be needed to generate cached hits. That means a first request after a purge can measure a different path from later requests, even when the URL has not changed. Use response headers to identify the cache condition where possible, and label the runs rather than averaging unlike conditions together.

Browser cache also affects repeat visits

When checking a visual or content change, WP Engine recommends purging cache to ensure updated, consistent content and using a fresh private or incognito browser session to test with a fresh browser cache. A private session still retains cache while it remains open, so reopening it is relevant when you need another fresh browser-cache condition. Follow WP Engine’s troubleshooting guidance for its suggested checks.

How to test changes without risking a live site

WP Engine environments are separate WordPress installations. Its documentation recommends using staging to test minor changes such as plugin updates and suggests creating a checkpoint or a staging/development environment before troubleshooting changes. See WP Engine’s environments guide and troubleshooting guidance.

  • PING Tester+IP Scanner: This handheld Ping cable toner can be used to diagnose and maintain local area networks (Lans) running TCP/IP protocols. Powerful PING capabilities can verify connections, check the integrity of transmitted and received data, indicate network traffic load by measuring round-trip times and provide IP addresses
  • Network Rate Test + Cable Continuity Test: Ethernet tester can quickly assess network rate issues. Conducts PING tests from multiple locations to gauge server and website response speeds. Allows users to ensure the integrity and connectivity of network cables by identifying any breaks, openings, or short circuits along the cable length.
  • POE Tester: Identifies PoE devices efficiently. Detects crossover methods (unknown/end-span/mid-span/8-core power supply) and polarity. Comprehensive PoE detection, including non-standard, IEEE 802.3AF, and IEEE 802.3AT.
  • Make one change in staging or development, then test the same URL and conditions you used for the baseline.
  • Use cache purges deliberately and record them; a purge changes the condition being measured.
  • Do not add random, constantly changing asset query strings to a production site just to force a fresh test. WP Engine says dynamic query strings can help during staging or development but are not recommended in live production because caching matters for page-load performance. The guidance is in its caching documentation.
  • After a change behaves as intended in a non-production environment, follow your normal deployment process and verify the live page separately.

External page tests and Performance Insights answer different questions

Measurement Best question it answers What to keep in mind
External page test How does this particular page load under this test setup? It is a point-in-time snapshot. Interpret its score and recommendations in light of the test location, device or emulation, cache state, URL, and run time.
WP Engine Performance Insights How is this environment performing over time from WP Engine’s perspective? It includes a site score, busiest-hour requests, average latency, cache hit ratio, error rate, metric comparisons, slow pages, and a slow query monitor. Review the definitions and thresholds, not just the score.
Application Performance Which application or code component may be contributing to persistent slowness? WP Engine describes it as ongoing, code-level monitoring through New Relic. It is a paid extension, is unavailable for purchase on Shared plans, and is intended for users with code-development experience.

WP Engine says its site score combines WordPress latency and cacheability. Its documentation specifies a seven-day lookback and requires at least 150 page requests in a day to generate a score for that day; a new site begins showing a score seven days after the first day it meets that traffic threshold. These named figures are WP Engine’s documented thresholds in 2026, not requirements for running an external test. Read WP Engine’s Performance Insights metric definitions.

The score also has a specific scope: WP Engine measures latency from its servers, and its cache-hit ratio refers to Varnish page cache rather than Cloudflare CDN cache. It is therefore not interchangeable with an external test score. WP Engine notes that the score may be less relevant for sites where all users log in, sites that do not experience viral traffic, or sites that do not prioritize high search ranking.

What to investigate when a result is slow

Start with the evidence the test provides, then match the next step to the suspected layer. A page test can point to a slow asset or page-level issue, but it does not necessarily identify the application code responsible.

  • Unexpectedly different repeat runs: Compare cache headers and the browser-cache condition first. Confirm that both runs used the same page and test setup.
  • Slow page or request patterns across the environment: Check Performance Insights for latency, cacheability, errors, and slow pages; use the metric definitions to understand what each value covers.
  • Persistent slowness with no clear cause from the page report: Application Performance is WP Engine’s ongoing, code-level diagnostic option. It is a paid extension and cannot be purchased on Shared plans; WP Engine says code-development experience is useful for getting the most from it. Details are in WP Engine’s Application Performance documentation.
  • Considering an optimization product: NitroPack is an optional WordPress optimization extension documented by WP Engine. It is an intervention to evaluate, not a guaranteed improvement; check compatibility in staging or development before applying changes to production. See WP Engine’s NitroPack configuration guide.

WP Engine’s guidance on improving page cacheability can also help when the platform metrics point toward cacheability as an issue.
