If a Wowza-fed YouTube stream does not resume after a reconnect, check the two connections separately: first the encoder-to-Wowza incoming stream, then Wowza’s stream target to YouTube. An encoder reporting that it reconnected is not proof that YouTube is receiving video. Confirm the relevant status in Wowza and look for a preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
1. Check whether the encoder is reaching Wowza
- In Wowza Streaming Engine, open the application’s Incoming Streams view and find the expected stream. Confirm its status is Active. The stream detail view can also show uptime and throughput.
- If the stream is missing or inactive, check the encoder’s configured application name, stream name, server address and port. Confirm any required source username and password are correct; Wowza says RTMP and RTSP-based encoders require source authentication by default, and credentials are case-sensitive. The default streaming host port is TCP 1935.
- Reconnect the encoder after correcting any mismatch, then check Incoming Streams again. Continue to the YouTube target only after the incoming source is present and active.
These checks follow Wowza’s encoder connection instructions, updated September 17, 2026.
2. Check Wowza’s connection to YouTube
If the incoming stream is active but YouTube is not receiving it, inspect the configured YouTube stream target in Wowza. This is a separate connection from the encoder’s input.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the target uses the actual incoming source stream, not a different or misspelled stream name.
- Check that its destination application corresponds to the YouTube Stream URL.
- In YouTube Studio, verify the event’s Stream URL and stream key, then compare them with the values configured in Wowza. Correct a stale, mistyped or mismatched value.
- Read the target’s status in Wowza and use it to decide what to check next.
| Wowza target status | What it indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting | The target is enabled but is not yet pushing. Its source may not be connected, or Wowza may still be initializing the destination connection. | Confirm the incoming source is active and the target refers to that source; allow for initialization, then check the status again. |
| Active | Wowza connected to YouTube and is pushing the stream. | Verify receipt by checking for a preview in YouTube Live Control Room. |
| Error | Wowza could not connect. The target configuration may be invalid or the destination server may have a problem. | Make sure the configured source is connected, then recheck the URL, stream key, source and destination application. |
Wowza’s YouTube stream-target walkthrough, updated August 7, 2026, describes YouTube as receiving the target over RTMP.

3. Verify receipt in YouTube Live Control Room
Open the relevant event in YouTube Live Control Room and look for its preview. Wowza’s documented verification is the preview: it shows that YouTube is receiving the stream. An active incoming stream proves the encoder reached Wowza; an active target indicates Wowza is pushing. Neither should be treated as a substitute for checking the YouTube endpoint.
Does Wowza automatically reconnect the YouTube target?
Wowza documents a MediaCaster Stream Monitor streamTimeout setting for monitoring and reconnecting certain offline incoming streams. Its documented protocol scope is native RTP, MPEG-TS, RTSP/RTP and SHOUTcast/Icecast—not RTMP. The guide’s example uses 12000 milliseconds (12 seconds) as a timeout before retrying when a supported incoming stream has been offline for more than 12 seconds. This is an example configuration value, not a promised recovery time, and it is not a general fix for an outgoing RTMP target to YouTube.

- Encoder says it reconnected, but Wowza shows no incoming stream: recheck the server and port, application and stream names, and any required case-sensitive source credentials.
- Wowza incoming stream is active, but the target says Waiting: make sure the target uses that incoming stream; Wowza may also still be initializing the destination connection.
- Target says Error: check the YouTube Stream URL and key, target source and destination application. Wowza also identifies a destination-server issue as a possible cause.
- Target is Active, but you cannot confirm playback at YouTube: check the correct event’s Live Control Room for a preview. Do not infer YouTube receipt from encoder status alone.
- You are considering
streamTimeoutfor an RTMP source or YouTube output: the documented reconnect feature’s listed protocol scope does not include RTMP, so do not assume it applies.
