Wireless over-ear headphones can work well for lifting and other relatively still, light-to-moderate workouts, but they are not a dependable choice for every exercise. A shortlist based on current cited reviews has two clear picks: Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless for comfort and isolation, and Nothing Headphone (a) for a more stable fit during some movement. Neither should be treated as proven sweat-proof. For running, HIIT, or floor exercises, secure earbuds or open-ear designs may be a better fit.
Which workout over-ear headphones are worth considering?
There is no well-supported, standardized head-to-head test establishing five current over-ear workout headphones in ranked order. The two strongest current recommendations in the cited reviews are Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless and Nothing Headphone (a). Two older workout-oriented models appear in a 2026 roundup, but their present availability and exact versions need confirmation; they are alternatives to investigate, not equally established current buys.
| Model | What the cited source supports | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless | RTINGS names it its best tested over-ear workout choice. It highlights comfort, noise isolation, lightweight construction, soft cushions, and 26-hour battery life. | Static or moderate gym sessions where comfort and blocking gym noise matter. | RTINGS says fit may become unstable during high-intensity movement. The cited review does not establish a sweat-resistance rating. (RTINGS, updated July 8, 2026) |
| Nothing Headphone (a) | RTINGS names it its mid-range pick and reports an IP52 rating. It found the fit more stable than Bose during more mobile exercises such as walking lunges, but less comfortable. | People who want an over-ear option for walking, controlled movement, or gym sessions that are not high-impact. | IP52 is not proof of sweat-proof performance. SoundGuys separately lists Nothing Headphone 1 with IP52; that is a distinct model name, and its specifications should not be transferred to Headphone (a). (RTINGS; SoundGuys, 2026 roundup) |
| Plantronics BackBeat FIT 6100 | SoundGuys describes this older workout over-ear model as IPX5-rated and exercise-oriented. | A possible used or remaining-stock alternative, if the exact model and condition suit you. | The source calls it several years old; verify current stock, model status, and the precise listing. Do not assume a rating or feature applies to another product. (SoundGuys, 2026 roundup) |
| Under Armour Project Rock by JBL | SoundGuys lists this workout over-ear model as IPX4-rated. | An alternative to check only if you can confirm the exact edition and availability. | The rating applies to the specific model cited, not other JBL or Under Armour headphones; current availability is not established by the roundup. (SoundGuys, 2026 roundup) |
These four entries are not a five-way ranking: the evidence supports two current review picks plus two older possibilities that require availability checks. Adding a fifth full-size over-ear model would imply a level of current, comparable evidence that the cited sources do not provide.

Start with movement and fit security rather than sound quality. Over-ear cups can feel secure during exercises where your head stays relatively still, but running, quick changes of direction, floor work, and high-impact intervals make slippage more likely. The cups also cover the ears, which can retain heat and moisture.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
- Mostly lifting or machine work: Over-ears are most defensible for controlled sets such as squats or deadlifts, provided the headband and cups remain stable when you brace or look down. Bose is the comfort-oriented option in RTINGS’ assessment; Nothing Headphone (a) has the more stable fit in its reported mobile-exercise comparison.
- Walking or moderate movement: Nothing Headphone (a) is the better-supported over-ear candidate when some movement is involved, although its comfort trade-off matters for longer sessions.
- Running, HIIT, or floor exercises: Do not assume a full-size headset will stay in place. SoundGuys warns that over-ears can slip during floor and bench exercises. Consider earbuds with hooks or fins, or an open-ear style, if secure retention matters more than having full ear cups.
- Busy gym: Noise isolation can help reduce surrounding sound, but be mindful of safety and announcements. Bose is the cited option with noise isolation specifically identified as a strength.
What do IP ratings and sweat claims actually tell you?
An IP code describes tested protection against ingress of dust or water under specified conditions. It is not a blanket promise that headphones will tolerate sweat during exercise. RTINGS notes that manufacturers’ sweat-resistance claims are not standardized, so ratings should be read as model-specific protection information—not as proof that a headset is suitable for heavy sweating.
Nothing Headphone (a) is reported as IP52 by RTINGS, while the older Plantronics BackBeat FIT 6100 and Under Armour Project Rock by JBL are listed by SoundGuys as IPX5 and IPX4 respectively. These are distinct ratings for distinct models; they do not establish equivalent protection or justify applying the ratings to a brand’s other headphones.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
After a workout, wipe the headphones down, especially the cushions and areas that contact skin. If you plan to use over-ears frequently for exercise, check whether replacement cushions are available for the exact model: replaceable pads can help address odor from trapped sweat, but compatible replacement pads have not been confirmed for each headphone listed here.
How to choose between the two current picks
Choose Bose for comfort and isolation
RTINGS’ July 8, 2026 guide identifies Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless as its best tested over-ear workout choice. Its review cites a lightweight build, soft cushions, comfort, and noise isolation, and reports 26-hour battery life for this model. That makes it a more natural fit for controlled gym sessions than vigorous movement, where RTINGS says the fit can become unstable.
Rank #3
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Choose Nothing for a more mobile over-ear fit
RTINGS’ mid-range pick, Nothing Headphone (a), was more stable than Bose in its comparison during walking lunges and similar movement, but it was less comfortable. Its reported IP52 rating is a separate consideration, not a guarantee against sweat damage. Choose it if the fit comparison matters more to you than Bose’s comfort advantage, and keep your workout intensity in mind.

If your routine includes runs, fast intervals, or repeated floor transitions, a purpose-built earbud may be more secure than a full-size headset. For example, TechRadar describes the ear-hook design of Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 as secure through runs and gym workouts, and reports up to 10 hours per earbud and around 45 hours total with the case. Those are cited figures for this earbud model, not an over-ear comparison or a promise for other products. (TechRadar, 2026 guide)

JBL Reflect Contour is another easily confused category case: JBL/HARMAN’s specification sheet describes it as an older wireless sport earphone with an in-ear fit and over-ear hook, IPX5, and up to eight hours of continuous playback. It is not a full-size over-ear headphone, and its specification sheet does not establish current availability. (JBL/HARMAN specification sheet)
