A first latch is something you and your baby learn together—not a pass-or-fail test. Get comfortable, bring your baby close and wait for a wide-open mouth before bringing them chin-first to the breast. If it hurts or the latch keeps slipping, gently break the suction and try again; ask a midwife, clinician or lactation professional for help if the problem continues.

Start with comfort and closeness

Breastfeeding can take time to get used to. The NHS describes it as a skill that parent and baby learn together, so needing more than one attempt is not a failure.

  1. Choose a position in which you can relax and support your baby. A pillow or cushion is optional if it helps you get comfortable; it is not required for a latch.
  2. Hold your baby close, facing your breast. Keep the head and body aligned rather than turning the head toward you while the body faces elsewhere.
  3. Position your baby so their nose is level with your nipple. Support the baby without pressing the back of the head in a way that prevents it from tipping back.

Skin-to-skin contact after birth can encourage a newborn’s natural reflexes to attach. ACOG says most healthy newborns are ready to breastfeed within the first hour after birth, but this is general guidance, not a deadline: readiness and birth circumstances vary.

Help your baby take a deep mouthful

  1. With your baby’s nose level with the nipple, wait for the head to tip back and the mouth to open wide.
  2. Bring the baby toward the breast, chin first, so they can take a large mouthful. Avoid leaning your breast forward into the baby’s mouth.
  3. Check that your baby’s nose remains clear and that the chin is against the breast. Keep your baby close while they feed.

If your baby starts with a narrow, shallow mouthful, or the latch feels uncomfortable, you can gently release the suction with a clean finger between the breast and your baby’s gums, then reposition and try again.

Check how the latch looks and feels

A single sign does not tell the whole story. Look at the latch and how feeding feels, and watch for swallowing.

  • Signs of a good attachment: your baby’s mouth is wide open, the chin rests against the breast, the lips turn outward and the cheeks stay rounded. You may see or hear swallowing. NHS guidance notes that more of the darker skin around the nipple is usually visible above the baby’s top lip than below the bottom lip.
  • Signs to reassess: the baby is sucking only on the nipple, the lips curl inward, the cheeks dimple, the baby repeatedly comes off, or there is little evidence of swallowing. A nipple that looks flattened or misshapen after a feed can also be a sign of a shallow latch.
  • Pain or injury: a latch should not remain painful. Persistent pain, cracked or bleeding nipples, or concerns that your baby is not getting enough milk are reasons to seek skilled help.

If a concerning sign persists, ask a midwife, clinician, health visitor or lactation support provider to observe a feed. Getting help early can make it easier to assess positioning and attachment and address worries about intake or milk supply.

Expect frequent feeds, not a pass-or-fail first attempt

Newborns commonly feed often. ACOG reports that most babies feed at least 8 to 12 times in 24 hours during the first weeks. That figure describes feeding frequency; it is not a required schedule for every baby, nor a measure of whether the first latch succeeded. Follow your care team’s advice for your baby, especially if your baby was born early or has a health concern.

When to get individual advice

General latch guidance cannot assess an individual baby’s health or milk intake. Contact your baby’s care team or a breastfeeding support professional if you remain worried, feeding is persistently painful, your nipples are injured, your baby repeatedly cannot stay attached, or you are concerned about swallowing or milk supply. They can watch a feed and tailor advice to your circumstances.
