WordPress is the better choice for a blog, growing business website, online store, or site that needs extensive design and SEO control. Google Sites is better for a simple, mostly static site that should be quick to build and easy to share with a team using Google Workspace. The key distinction is that WordPress offers more room to customize and expand, while Google Sites reduces setup and maintenance work. “WordPress” can mean either managed WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress.org, and that affects who handles hosting.

How WordPress and Google Sites differ

Google Sites is a website tool for creating internal project hubs, team sites, and public-facing information pages. Google says it is designed to work without requiring a designer, programmer, or IT help. Its help materials cover editing pages, embedding Google content, sharing and publishing, custom domains, analytics, accessibility, and exporting or troubleshooting a site (Google Sites Help; Google Workspace Learning Center).

WordPress is a broader publishing platform. WordPress.org lists blogs, business websites, portfolios, magazines, communities, and networks among its uses, and supports themes, user roles, and plugins (WordPress.org Features). Those options make it possible to build a more tailored site, but also mean more choices—and, particularly with self-hosting, more responsibility.

WordPress.org and WordPress.com are not the same hosting arrangement. WordPress.com includes managed hosting; with WordPress.org software, the site owner finds and manages hosting from a third party (WordPress.com Support; WordPress.com managed hosting).

WordPress vs. Google Sites at a glance

What matters WordPress Google Sites
Best fit Blogs, business websites, portfolios, magazines, communities, and sites expected to grow; supported uses listed by WordPress.org (WordPress.org Features). Internal hubs, team sites, classroom or event information, and simple public-facing pages; use cases described by Google (Google Workspace Learning Center).
Hosting WordPress.com includes managed hosting. WordPress.org software requires the owner to arrange and manage third-party hosting (WordPress.com Support). Google’s product help describes creating and publishing Sites without requiring the owner to manage a PHP/MySQL server (Google Sites Help; WordPress.org Requirements).
Design and functions Themes change presentation; plugins can add functions, including SEO features (WordPress.org Features; WordPress.org plugin directory). Google documents page editing and embedded Google content. The cited help does not document WordPress-style plugin and theme extensibility (Google Sites Help).
Search visibility Offers control through content, site configuration, and plugins; results still depend on the site and its content (WordPress.org SEO guidance). Google’s cited documentation covers analytics and publishing, but does not establish the same plugin-based SEO controls (Google Sites Help).
Ecommerce Can be extended with plugins, but the right setup and its costs depend on the chosen implementation; the cited sources do not specify a standard price. The cited Google Sites documentation does not establish a built-in ecommerce system. Verify any proposed third-party integration before relying on it (Google Sites Help).
Ongoing work Self-hosted sites require hosting and software-stack maintenance. Managed WordPress.com reduces infrastructure work (WordPress.org Requirements; WordPress.com managed hosting). Google handles the platform infrastructure; the site owner focuses on content, access, and publishing (Google Sites Help).

Which is easier for a beginner?

Choose Google Sites for the simplest setup

Google Sites is easier when the goal is a basic set of pages and the content already lives in Google Workspace. A team can assemble information, embed Google content, control sharing, and publish without choosing a web host or maintaining a server. This makes it a practical option for an internal portal, a class resource page, or a small event site.

Choose WordPress.com to reduce server work

WordPress.com offers WordPress publishing with managed hosting, so beginners can avoid arranging a separate server. It still presents more publishing and customization choices than a simple Google Sites project. Plans and included features vary, and WordPress.com warns that introductory hosting prices can change (WordPress.com managed hosting).

Self-host WordPress only if you want that control

With WordPress.org software, you must choose a compatible host, connect a domain, and keep the software environment maintained. WordPress.org recommends Apache or Nginx and requires PHP and MySQL support. It also warns that end-of-life software versions may expose a site to security vulnerabilities (WordPress.org Requirements). That work can be worthwhile when control matters, but it is not the easiest route for someone who wants to publish a few pages and leave infrastructure alone.

Is Google Sites good enough for a small business?

It can be enough if the business needs a straightforward information site: what it does, where it is, how to contact it, and other mostly static details. It is particularly convenient when a team already collaborates in Google Workspace and values simple editing and sharing over extensive customization.

Consider WordPress if the business expects to publish regularly, expand its site structure, add specialized features, or rely on a more configurable SEO and marketing setup. Google’s cited documentation does not establish WordPress-style plugins or built-in ecommerce, so do not assume Google Sites will support advanced sales, membership, or application workflows without checking a specific integration first.

Which is better for a blog, SEO, or ecommerce?

Blogging and content growth

WordPress is the stronger fit for a blog that may grow into a larger publication. WordPress.org explicitly supports blogs and magazines, and themes and plugins provide options for changing presentation and adding functions (WordPress.org Features). Google Sites can publish information, but the cited materials do not document comparable publishing extensions or content workflows.

SEO

WordPress provides more implementation control, including plugins that can add meta tags and keyword descriptions. Its SEO guidance also stresses the importance of useful content: “Make sure you have quality word content for a search engine to examine and compare with all the parts and pieces to give you a good ‘score’” (WordPress.org SEO guidance). A plugin is not a guarantee of search traffic; content and the overall site still matter. Google’s Sites help documents analytics and publishing but does not establish an equivalent plugin-based SEO toolset.

Ecommerce

If selling products online is central to the project, WordPress is the more plausible starting point because its plugin system can extend the site. That flexibility means you must select and maintain an appropriate ecommerce implementation; the available sources do not establish a single included setup or price. The cited Google Sites materials do not document a built-in ecommerce system, so confirm that any external sales service integrates with the exact site needs before choosing it.

How much control and maintenance do you want?

Self-hosted WordPress gives the owner control over hosting, themes, plugins, and code. That can support custom design, specialized functions, and future changes, but the owner is also responsible for the hosting environment and maintenance. Choose a host that meets WordPress.org’s stated requirements—Apache or Nginx is recommended, with PHP and MySQL support—and keep the stack on supported versions (WordPress.org Requirements).

WordPress.com trades some infrastructure responsibility for managed hosting. It is a middle option for people who want WordPress but do not want to administer a third-party server; available features and prices depend on the plan (WordPress.com Support).

Google Sites keeps infrastructure out of the site owner’s hands and fits naturally with Google content and team collaboration (Google Sites Help; Google Workspace Learning Center). The trade-off is less documented extensibility: the cited materials do not show the same theme-and-plugin model WordPress provides.

What does each option cost over time?

WordPress software itself is downloadable, but a self-hosted WordPress.org site still needs hosting and a domain, along with time spent maintaining it. Costs vary by host and by the themes, plugins, or services the site uses; the cited sources do not establish one universal total. WordPress.com bundles managed hosting, but plan prices and included features vary, and introductory prices can change (WordPress.com managed hosting).

Google Sites avoids the need to arrange a PHP/MySQL host for the site. The sources cited here do not establish a universal price comparison between Google Sites and WordPress plans, so the useful comparison is total effort as well as fees: simple collaboration and low infrastructure work versus greater control and the associated hosting and upkeep.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Google Sites for a small, mostly static information site, classroom or event page, internal documentation hub, or team portal where Google Workspace collaboration and quick publishing matter most.
  • Choose WordPress.com for a blog or business site that needs WordPress publishing features but where you prefer managed hosting over server administration.
  • Choose self-hosted WordPress.org when you need the greatest control over themes, plugins, code, SEO implementation, ecommerce options, or future site changes—and are prepared to manage hosting and updates.

WordPress.org says WordPress is “the platform of choice for over 43% of all sites across the web” on its About page, accessed in 2026 (WordPress.org About). That figure describes WordPress’s reach, not a guarantee that it is the right tool for every project.
