WordPress is testing a new design for real-time collaboration in posts, but it is not a feature shipping in WordPress 7.0 or ready for general use. The proposal would route edits through WordPress so the server can identify contributors, check permissions, combine updates, and flag conflicts. Three experimental sync engines are being compared, and performance—especially on lower-resource hosting—remains an open question.
What “server-aware” collaboration means
In the proposed design, collaborators send their edits to WordPress rather than exchanging them only with one another’s browsers. The server can record who made each change, verify that user’s authorization, merge and store updates, then send each editor changes they have not received. If an update cannot be merged cleanly, WordPress can raise a conflict for a person to review.
As proposal author Chris Zarate put it, “Collaboration should be server-aware, with WordPress Core in control.” That is the intended direction, not a description of a capability currently available in WordPress Core. The September 18, 2026 proposal says the exploration is early and not ready for Core inclusion.

Why the earlier browser-based experiment was removed
The previous approach kept a copy of a post as a CRDT document in each browser and exchanged updates among collaborators. Those edits stayed in browser memory until someone saved. This made it harder for WordPress itself to mediate authorship, permissions, and changes arriving from outside the active browser collaboration session.

- Attribution and permissions: WordPress could not reliably distinguish which collaborator authored each edit. For example, an author could add a script while an administrator edited elsewhere; if the administrator saved the combined document, the saved content could inherit the administrator’s permissions.
- Other editing paths: Changes made through the REST API or WP-CLI could not join the browser peer exchange cleanly. A scheduled integration could overwrite edits in an open editor.
- Drift and conflicts: Dropped connections or overlapping edits could leave collaborators with divergent copies, creating confusing merges or lost work.
The earlier real-time collaboration effort was removed from WordPress 7.0 before release. A May 2026 developer update cited the broad feature surface, race conditions, server load, memory efficiency, and recurring bugs found through fuzz testing. Work was described as continuing toward a future release; removal did not mean the feature had shipped. WordPress’s May 2026 developer update provides that release context.
How the three candidate sync engines differ
A sync engine determines how edits are combined. The project is comparing three candidates in a standalone plugin; the cited proposal has not selected a preferred engine.

These are design descriptions, not benchmark results. The Gutenberg Sync Engines repository calls the plugin a “decision tool, not a solution”: candidates can be selected and compared on the same site under the same conditions.

The engine governs how edits are represented and combined; a transport governs how updates travel between the editor and WordPress. The project makes both selectable so they can be evaluated in the same environment. A transport choice does not by itself determine how conflicting edits are merged.

What this could mean for hosting performance
Routing collaboration through WordPress makes server capacity and update delivery important parts of the design. The proposal says frequent polling is costly and less realistic for effective collaboration on lower-resource hosts. It suggests that collaboration may work better when peers exchange updates less often, while alternative transports could serve hosts prepared to invest more resources.
The official proposal and hosting outreach publish no measured resource cost or benchmark for the new candidates. They do not establish a minimum hosting tier, a performance improvement, or the expected load. WordPress’s Hosting team asked providers and hosting teams to test different server environments and return feedback with supporting data. Workload, allocated resources, and transport support are therefore evaluation questions—not settled findings. The September 24, 2026 host testing call describes that request.

Where the project stands and how to follow it
The proposal was published on September 18, 2026, followed by the Hosting team’s testing invitation on September 24. The next stated direction is to choose a preferred engine and package it as a feature plugin for wider testing; that selection has not yet been made in the cited proposal. The current work is an experiment, not a Core feature ready for everyday use.
WordPress framed the user-facing goal as collaborating in posts “the way you do in Google Docs,” but that describes the aspiration rather than current WordPress behavior. The WordPress Test team’s March 2026 invitation uses that comparison.

For hosting teams assessing the experiment, the useful contribution is comparative evidence from controlled environments: document the workload and server allocation, identify the transport and candidate engine, and report performance data alongside the conditions. The current official call asks for testing and supporting data, but does not prescribe a benchmark protocol.
