Start at that site’s API index—usually https://example.com/wp-json/ when pretty permalinks are enabled—to see which routes and methods it exposes. Use cookie authentication with a REST nonce for logged-in code running on the site; for an external client, use an Application Password over HTTPS. The examples below show how to discover routes, retrieve and create posts, and page through collections.
How the WordPress REST API is organized
The WordPress REST API is organized around predictable, resource-oriented URLs and HTTP response codes for API errors, according to the WordPress REST API Handbook. It exchanges JSON, including in error responses. The API is not a single central service for all WordPress sites: each compatible site exposes its own API and may have different routes depending on its configuration and installed extensions.
A route is a URI path. An endpoint is the operation associated with a route and an HTTP method, so one route may support several operations. For example, /wp-json/wp/v2/posts/123 can retrieve a post with GET, update it with PUT, or delete it with DELETE, if those operations are available and the requesting user is allowed to perform them.
How to find the routes available on a site
Request the API index on the WordPress site you intend to use. With pretty permalinks, the usual URL is https://example.com/wp-json/. A GET request returns information about the routes and supported methods on that installation. If the site does not use pretty permalinks, pass the route with the rest_route query parameter instead. curl "https://example.com/wp-json/"The core reference includes routes for posts, pages, comments, media, categories, tags, users, settings, search, and plugins. These are common examples, not a guarantee that every route is enabled on every site. Use the target site’s index as the authority, then consult the documentation for the route you plan to call. Authentication identifies the user but does not by itself grant permission to perform an operation; access depends on that user’s capabilities and, for custom routes or plugin routes, the route’s implementation.
Which authentication method should you use?

"https://HOSTNAME/wp-json/wp/v2/users?context=edit"Replace USERNAME, PASSWORD, and HOSTNAME with the WordPress username, generated Application Password, and site host. Use HTTPS. The authentication guide also describes a separate Basic Authentication plugin that sends a username and password with every request; it says to use that plugin only for development and testing and prefers Application Passwords for production. That warning concerns the plugin, not the documented Application Password method.
How to retrieve posts
The posts collection is /wp/v2/posts. These requests use the API root for a particular site:

The endpoint’s available arguments and permissions can depend on the site; see the official posts reference for the collection’s documented fields and parameters.
How to create a post
Creating a post uses POST /wp/v2/posts. The request must be authenticated as a user allowed to create posts. This illustrative curl command sends a JSON body with a title, content, and draft status:

curl "https://example.com/wp-json/wp/v2/posts?search=WordPress&per_page=20&page=1"Collection requests can use page, per_page, and offset. The pagination documentation states that per_page accepts 1 through 100; large queries can affect site performance, so it recommends multiple requests rather than trying to retrieve more than 100 records at once. Paginated responses include two useful headers:
X-WP-Total: the number of records in the collection.X-WP-TotalPages: the number of pages available for the request.
These limits and headers are described in the handbook’s pagination guide, last updated January 16, 2024. Read the response headers to determine how many pages to request; do not assume that a single response contains the whole collection.
