Analytics measures visits and on-site activity; Search Console shows how pages appear in Google Search and the clicks they receive.
Choose an analytics tool for your WordPress blog
The right option depends on whether you need Google reporting, simple post activity counts, or more control over where analytics data is hosted. These systems use different collection methods and definitions, so their totals may not match.

For a beginner who wants Google measurement, Site Kit is a practical starting point. Its setup documentation lists WordPress 5.2 or later and PHP 7.4 or later, and requires a publicly accessible production site. Check the Site Kit installation and setup requirements against your hosting environment.
Connect Site Kit to GA4
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Site Kit by Google, install it, and activate it.
- Open Site Kit > Dashboard and begin setup. Sign in with a Google account that has access to the services you want to connect, then complete the site verification steps.
- Connect Analytics during setup, or later go to Site Kit > Settings > Connect More Services > Analytics.
- Select the Analytics account, GA4 property, and web data stream for this site, or create them through the setup flow. Check that you are connecting the intended property rather than another site’s data.
- Follow the prompts to connect Search Console if you want Google Search impressions and clicks in WordPress as well.
Labels can change as Google updates its interfaces. Consult Site Kit’s Analytics setup and reporting documentation if a label or step differs. A newly connected service can take up to 48 hours to begin populating the Site Kit dashboard.

Find statistics for an individual post
Site-wide totals show how the blog is doing overall, but they do not reveal whether a particular article is attracting readers. In Site Kit, open the dashboard and select a page or post from its search results to see URL-specific metrics. The toolbar integration can also show information for the page you are viewing. Look at the post’s exact URL and reporting period, then use the metrics that help answer a specific editorial question:

- Views or page views: How much page consumption was recorded? The tool’s definition determines what counts as a view.
- Users: How many estimated distinct visitors were reported for the period? Users are not the same as views; one user can generate multiple views.
- Acquisition or source: Where did visits come from? When available, use this to distinguish Google Search, other referrals, social platforms, and direct traffic.
- Engagement or time on page: Did visitors interact with the page, and how long did they spend? These metrics are signals, not proof on their own that an article is useful or successful.
- Search impressions and clicks: How often did the page appear in Google Search, and how many clicks did it receive there? These describe Google Search visibility and clicks, not all site visits.

Use post metrics to decide what to do next
Start with the question you want the report to answer. A post with many views but few Search impressions may have an audience arriving from other channels. A post with impressions but few clicks may merit a closer look at its search result presentation. If visitors arrive but show little engagement, review whether the page meets their apparent needs and whether the tracking is configured correctly. These are diagnostic clues, not universal rules: context and the metric definitions matter.

Use a consistent date range when comparing posts, and compare like with like—for example, similar publication ages or traffic sources. Avoid treating a single metric as a score. Views measure volume, users estimate distinct visitors, and engagement describes on-page behavior; none alone establishes an article’s value.
Track events or conversions only after defining the action that matters, such as a completed signup, and configuring measurement for it. Site Kit alone cannot configure event tracking; it can work with GA4 and/or Google Tag Manager. See Site Kit’s event tracking guidance.

Verify tracking if reports are empty or unexpectedly low
Do not draw conclusions from a report until you have checked that collection is working. Work through these checks:
- Confirm the destination: In Site Kit settings, verify that the intended GA4 account, property, and web data stream are connected.
- Check installation: Make sure the tracking snippet is present and that another plugin or theme has not added a duplicate tag.
- Check access: Confirm that the Google account used in WordPress has adequate permissions for the connected services.
- Check site availability: Site Kit setup requires a publicly accessible production site; a private or development copy may not collect the expected data.
- Account for consent: If a consent-management plugin waits for visitors to accept cookies before analytics runs, visits without consent may not be recorded by that setup. Do not disable consent controls just to increase reported counts.
- Allow time for reporting: A new connection needs time to collect data and for the dashboard to populate.
For additional troubleshooting, consult Site Kit’s Analytics troubleshooting guide. If GA4, Jetpack Stats, Analytify, or Matomo reports differ, investigate their definitions, filters, permissions, and consent behavior. There is no universal adjustment factor that makes their counts equivalent.

When to choose an alternative to Site Kit
Choose Jetpack Stats for simple activity reporting
If your main need is a quick view of post views, likes, comments, and daily trends, Jetpack Stats may be enough. Its figures should be interpreted as Jetpack’s reporting, not as a substitute for GA4 counts.
Choose Analytify for GA4 reports near posts
If you prefer to see GA4 metrics close to individual posts in WordPress, Analytify’s listing describes per-post views, users, bounce rate, and average time on page. Review which features are included in the version you plan to use.
Choose Matomo when self-hosting matters
Matomo for WordPress may suit site owners who want a self-hosted analytics implementation and control over their data. Because it runs on your WordPress server, its resource demands matter; the vendor’s 50,000-page-view monthly guidance is a planning reference, not a guaranteed threshold for every host.
