WordPress hosting is a type of web hosting configured or packaged for WordPress. It may simplify installation and include services such as backups or updates, depending on the plan. General web hosting can also run WordPress if it meets the software’s requirements. The key choice is not between two fundamentally different kinds of servers; it is how much WordPress-specific setup and maintenance you want the host to handle.
What is the difference between WordPress hosting and web hosting?
Web hosting is the broad service that stores a website’s files and makes the site accessible online. WordPress is software that runs on a compatible web server and database. A host’s “WordPress hosting” is a service or configuration aimed at running that software; it is still web hosting.
A WordPress-focused plan may have WordPress pre-installed and may offer backups, updates, or developer tools. Those are possible features, not guarantees attached to the label. Check the plan’s actual inclusions and limits.
Can regular web hosting run WordPress?
Yes. WordPress.org says any host that supports WordPress’s requirements can host a site using the software. Many general hosts also offer an automatic WordPress installer, but installation help and other services vary by provider and plan. See the WordPress.org installation FAQ and its Hosting WordPress documentation.

Before signing up, compare the host’s current software versions with WordPress.org’s requirements. As of the requirements page consulted for this article, WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended, though another server that supports PHP and MySQL may work. These recommendations can change, so check the live page when choosing a plan.
WordPress.org warns that legacy PHP 7.4+ and MySQL 5.5.5+ have reached official end of life and may expose sites to security vulnerabilities. Do not treat a provider’s ability to install WordPress as proof that its software stack is current.

What does managed WordPress hosting mean?
“Managed” generally means the host takes responsibility for some setup or maintenance work, but the exact division varies. WordPress developer guidance describes one approach in which the host supplies a chosen software stack with fixed versions. That can reduce routine administration, while limiting the site owner’s ability to choose or change those versions.
Do not assume every managed plan includes the same services. Confirm whether the host handles WordPress core updates, server-environment updates, backups, restoration, staging, and migrations—and whether those services are automatic, optional, or limited. WordPress.org lists backups and updates as features hosts may offer, not universal promises.

How to compare two hosting plans
Compare a general plan and a WordPress-focused plan against the same practical questions. A WordPress label alone does not establish compatibility, performance, security, or reliability.
- Compatibility: Which PHP and database versions are available? Is HTTPS supported, and what server configuration is used?
- Setup: Is WordPress pre-installed, or is an installer available? Does the plan include migration help, staging, or other developer tools you will actually use?
- Maintenance: Who applies WordPress and environment updates? Are backups included, how often are they made, and how do you restore one?
- Security responsibilities: Which protections does the host manage, and which remain your responsibility? WordPress.org notes that hosting is more secure when PHP applications such as WordPress run using the account’s username rather than the server’s default shared username. Ask the provider how accounts are configured; the plan label itself does not guarantee this protection.
- Resources and flexibility: What CPU and memory resources are available? Are software versions fixed, and can you change them if your site needs a different configuration?
- Support: Does support cover WordPress-specific issues, and is that help included at your plan level? WordPress.org suggests an experienced provider may be useful for people new to WordPress, but check the support terms rather than relying on a general marketing claim.
These questions are more useful than assuming a WordPress-branded plan is automatically faster or safer. The right choice depends on the actual features, restrictions, and support you receive.

Is WordPress hosting the same as WordPress.com?
No. WordPress.com is one hosted platform. Its support page describes its plans as all-inclusive managed hosting, so customers do not need to host those sites elsewhere. WordPress software from WordPress.org can instead be installed with other hosting companies, including general web hosts that meet its requirements. See WordPress.com’s guide to choosing a host and the WordPress.org installation FAQ.
