If your WordPress site redirects visitors to an unfamiliar website, treat it as a possible compromise—not proof of which file or account is responsible. To stop a hacked WordPress redirect safely, document what is happening, contact your host, preserve a snapshot, investigate, secure access, clean carefully, then patch and verify. WordPress.org recommends assessing symptoms in context rather than treating any one symptom or scan as a complete diagnosis. WordPress.org’s hacked-site FAQ is the reference for the steps below.
How do I stop a hacked WordPress redirect?
Work through these steps in order. Avoid guessing at a file to delete or restoring an unverified backup: either can destroy useful evidence or leave the cause untouched.

Record the redirect and its context
Write down the affected page URLs, the unexpected destination, when the redirect occurs and the time zone. Check whether it happens for logged-in visitors, logged-out visitors, or both. Note recent site changes and save screenshots and relevant hosting or security notices. WordPress.org recommends documenting the symptoms, timing, recent actions, and hosting details before cleanup.

Contact your hosting provider
Report that visitors are being redirected and ask whether the host sees related activity or can help contain the account. This matters especially on shared hosting, where other sites may be exposed to the same incident. The host may also help determine whether the behavior is connected to the site or a hosting service issue.

Preserve a snapshot before changing anything
Make a copy of the site files and database before cleanup, or ask the host to help create one. Keep it as evidence and a reference, not as a clean restore point: it may contain the malicious changes. Do not overwrite the live site with an old backup unless you have reason to trust that backup and understand what data or changes would be lost.

Investigate from more than one angle
Use more than one kind of check. WordPress.org describes application-based scans and remote crawler scans, while cautioning that no single solution is best. A scan result is a lead, not proof that the site is clean. Scan the computer used to administer the site as well; stolen FTP or administrator credentials may have originated there.

Secure every relevant access path
Reset passwords for WordPress accounts and relevant hosting access, including FTP or SFTP, the hosting control panel, and database access. Review the user list, particularly administrator accounts, for users you do not recognize or no longer need. Use long, unique passwords and consider enabling multi-factor authentication where available. After cleanup, reset passwords again; if database credentials change, update them in the site configuration as well.

Clean the installation without blind deletion
Identify the affected component and remove unauthorized changes. WordPress.org specifically calls out

The right cleanup method depends on the symptoms and your technical ability. Do not delete files simply because they look unfamiliar, or overwrite a working site without preserving its data and understanding how it is deployed. If you cannot safely compare files and database content or coordinate changes with the host, seek qualified help.

Patch, verify, and investigate how the attacker got in
After removing unauthorized changes, update WordPress, themes, and plugins. Determine how access was gained rather than stopping once the visible redirect disappears. Reset access again after cleanup, continue monitoring, and strengthen access controls. If you cannot establish that both the redirect and unauthorized access are gone, involve a qualified WordPress cleanup specialist.

Should you clean the site yourself or hire a specialist?
Choose based on what you can reliably inspect and verify, not just on whether a scanner reports suspicious files. WordPress.org notes that cleanup depends on the symptoms and the site owner’s technical ability; it also emphasizes snapshots, host coordination, and investigating the compromise.

What a redirect does—and does not—tell you
An unexpected redirect is a meaningful symptom to investigate, but it does not identify the entry route or the responsible file by itself. Removing one visible change or getting a clean scan does not establish that every unauthorized change is gone. Recovery includes securing access, finding how the intruder got in, and monitoring after cleanup—not only making the redirect stop appearing.
