To use one, first find the class on the correct element in the page’s rendered HTML, then target it in CSS with a period—for example, .wp-block-image. The exact classes depend on the page, content, theme, and other code on your site, so there is no universal list that applies everywhere.
Where WordPress-generated classes appear
| Element or feature | Common classes or pattern | What they describe |
|---|---|---|
| Page body | home, blog, archive, search, search-results, search-no-results, error404, wp-singular, wp-theme-{theme}, wp-child-theme-{theme} |
The current request, queried object, or theme context. The exact combination varies by page and installation. See WordPress’s body_class() reference. |
| Post container | post-{ID}, a post type name, type-{post_type}, status-{post_status}, format-{format}, hentry, category-{slug}, tag-{slug}, and taxonomy-term patterns |
The post’s identity, type, status, format, and applicable taxonomy terms. Not every post has every class. See WordPress’s post_class() reference. |
| Aligned content | alignnone, alignleft, aligncenter, alignright |
Alignment-related markup documented for images and block elements. The theme’s CSS determines the visual effect. See the CSS section of the WordPress Advanced Administration Handbook. |
| Captions | wp-caption and related caption markup classes |
Caption-related markup. Check the rendered HTML to identify the class on the particular element you want to style; the handbook documents the markup and CSS context at CSS – Advanced Administration Handbook. |
| Blocks | .wp-block-{namespace}-{slug}; core blocks commonly use .wp-block-{slug} |
The block type. For example, core image is commonly targeted as .wp-block-image; third-party block authors can customize their output. See Block Stylesheets – Theme Handbook. |
These are practical examples, not an exhaustive or version-independent inventory. The active request, post data, registered taxonomies, theme, and third-party code all affect the output.
How to add body and post classes in a theme
body_class() prints classes on the <body> element, giving CSS a way to target page or site context. Place it in the opening body tag in a theme template:
<body <?php body_class(); ?>>
post_class() prints classes for the current post on its containing element, often an <article> or <div>:

<article <?php post_class(); ?>>
Both functions accept an optional argument for adding one or more class names. Their get_body_class() and get_post_class() counterparts return class arrays for code that needs to inspect or process the list. Consult the body class function reference and post class function reference.
Read example output as an illustration
The body_class() reference illustrates markup such as <body class="page page-id-2 page-parent page-template-default logged-in">. It is an example, not a guarantee that those classes will appear on every site or page. Likewise, the post_class() reference includes a contributed example with post-4564, post, type-post, status-publish, format-standard, hentry, and category-news. Use those names to understand common patterns, not as a fixed output.

How to target a class in CSS
In a CSS selector, put a period directly before the class name. The selector only matches elements that actually carry that class:
.category-news {
/* styles for matching elements */
}
.wp-block-image {
/* styles for core Image blocks */
}
Choose a selector based on the scope you want:
- Page context: A body class can scope styles to a kind of request or page. For example, a body class such as
archivecan be useful when a style should apply across an archive view. - Post context: A post type or taxonomy class can match a group of posts, while
post-{ID}targets a particular post when that class is present. - Block context: A core block class such as
wp-block-imagecan match instances of that block. Check the output before assuming a third-party block follows the same naming pattern.
A class is a selector hook, not a built-in visual rule: the theme’s CSS determines its appearance. Inspect the rendered HTML on the intended page before relying on a class or writing a selector.

How to add a custom body class
Use the body_class filter when a body class should appear only under a defined condition. This example adds example on pages using page-example.php:
add_filter( 'body_class', function( $classes ) {
if ( is_page_template( 'page-example.php' ) ) {
$classes[] = 'example';
}
return $classes;
} );
The callback must return the class array after making changes. The official body_class hook reference warns that failing to return it clears the classes and can affect the site’s visual state. Keep customizations in a child theme or another maintainable customization point rather than directly editing a parent theme that may be updated.

Where to put CSS changes safely
WordPress’s Advanced Administration Handbook says Custom CSS loads after the theme’s original CSS and can override specific declarations. That can be a practical place for a focused override; use a child theme or another maintained customization point when the change belongs with theme code. Whichever approach you choose, confirm that the selector matches the intended element and test the result on the relevant page.
