First determine whether the form itself is failing or whether only its email notification is missing. A form can accept and save a submission even when WordPress cannot deliver its notification; the fix depends on which stage failed.
1. Identify what happens when you submit the form
Submit a test entry and note the exact result: no visible response, a validation message, a success notice, a spam warning, or a server error. This separates a submission problem from a notification problem.
- No response or an error: Check required fields, CAPTCHA and anti-spam settings, then inspect the browser console and the form’s network request for JavaScript errors or a blocked response.
- A spam message or a response marked as spam: Investigate the form’s spam controls first. In one WordPress.org support example, the form response was
status: "spam"; the discussion treated the submission as blocked by spam filtering, not as an email-transport failure. See the example. - A success notice, but no email: Check whether the form plugin recorded the entry, then troubleshoot notification settings and mail delivery separately. WordPress handing a message to a mail server does not establish that the recipient’s inbox accepted it. WPForms explains this handoff.
Do not start by changing SMTP settings when the form is rejecting or failing to submit the entry. SMTP concerns mail transport, not whether a form accepts its fields or clears its spam checks.
2. Check the form’s notification settings
For each affected form, verify that notifications are enabled, the recipient address is correct, and any dynamic email tags or conditional rules work for the test entry. A misspelled address or a rule that does not match can make a working form appear to have a delivery problem. WPForms lists notification checks.

Contact Form 7
In Contact Form 7, open the form’s Mail tab and review the recipient, sender, subject, additional headers, message body, attachments, and any secondary Mail (2) template. The To field must use valid mailbox syntax. Mail (2) is sent only if the primary Mail succeeds. Contact Form 7 recommends using a sender address on the same domain as the website. 3. Find out whether WordPress mail works outside the form
Send a separate WordPress email, such as a password-reset notification, or use the mail test provided by your installed tools. Compare that result with the form’s behavior:

- Other WordPress emails also fail: The form plugin is less likely to be the only cause. Check the hosting provider’s mail restrictions or the configured mail service.
- Other WordPress emails work, but this form’s notification does not: Revisit the form’s recipient, notification rules, spam handling, and plugin-specific behavior.
WordPress may use PHP’s mail function by default, and a host or mail service can block it, limit it, or require authentication. An SMTP plugin helps only when you configure it to use an actual mailer or provider; installing the plugin while leaving the default PHP mailer selected does not, by itself, improve delivery. A successful SMTP test can help isolate a transport issue, but it does not prove the receiving mailbox accepted the message. WPForms’ troubleshooting guide and a WordPress.org support thread discuss mail testing and configuration.
4. Align the sender address and check recipient filtering
Use a From address on your site’s domain. If replies should go to the visitor, put the visitor’s address in Reply-To rather than using it as the sender. Contact Form 7 recommends configuring SPF and DKIM through your email provider. It also advises that a template sender such as wordpress@your-site-domain should exist on the host, because some hosts reject messages from a nonexistent sender. Contact Form 7 email best practices.

If one recipient gets the message and another does not, the second mailbox or its mail server may be filtering or rejecting it even though the form submits successfully. Ask the email provider to check its logs if the message cannot be found. WPForms’ delivery guidance covers recipient-side checks.
5. Isolate plugin, theme, and browser conflicts
If the form does not reach a success or error state, or the browser shows a blocked request, focus on submission blockers: required-field validation, CAPTCHA setup, anti-spam tools, and JavaScript errors. A plugin or theme interaction may also affect how the form behaves.

Contact Form 7 developer Takayuki Miyoshi has described plugin or theme interference as a frequent cause in his support experience; that is an account from support work, not a measured rate across WordPress sites. Contact Form 7 troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling other plugins and switching to a default theme to test whether the behavior changes, then restoring plugins one at a time to identify a conflict.
- Make a backup and, where practical, reproduce the issue on a staging site.
- Record the current symptom and test the form with other plugins disabled and a default theme enabled.
- If the form works, reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each change. Restore the original theme and retest once the plugin check is complete.
This process is a diagnostic test, not proof that the form plugin is defective. WordPress.org’s Health Check plugin listing describes a troubleshooting mode that disables plugins and uses a default theme only for the logged-in user. The same listing warns that the plugin has not been tested with the latest three major WordPress releases and may no longer be maintained, so check its current status before relying on it. 6. Escalate with useful evidence
- If a mail test fails: Send the error and timestamp to your mail provider or host.
- If the mail test succeeds but form notifications fail: Contact the form plugin’s support team with the plugin and version, redacted notification settings, the form response or network status, and relevant mail or debug logs.
- If logs show that mail was accepted but the recipient cannot find it: Ask the recipient’s email provider to search its filtering and quarantine logs.
Redact email addresses and other private information from public screenshots or support posts. A WordPress.org support discussion specifically advises users to hide personal addresses. See the discussion.
