Choose based on the kind of word challenge you want: Wordle is a compact deduction puzzle, Connections is about spotting relationships among words, and Spelling Bee asks you to build words from a set of letters. Quordle belongs in the comparison, but its current rules are not established by the available official sources, so check the live game before assuming how its challenge differs.
How the main daily word games differ
| Game | Main task | What the official description establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wordle | Deduction | Guess a five-letter word in six attempts. The New York Times Games listing. | Players who want one clearly bounded puzzle built around testing guesses. |
| Quordle | Not stated in a usable current official rules source | The current number of words, guesses, and other mechanics are not established here. | Players curious about the Wordle-versus-Quordle comparison should review the live game’s instructions before choosing based on difficulty or puzzle count. |
| Connections | Association and pattern recognition | Organize 16 terms into four categories; the Help Center describes finding themes between words. The New York Times Games listing and Connections Help Center. | Players who enjoy interpreting clues and finding a shared idea among seemingly unrelated terms. |
| Spelling Bee | Word construction | Make words from selected letters, including the required center letter; the daily word list is editor-curated. Spelling Bee Help Center. | Players who like exploring possible words from a limited letter set rather than solving one hidden answer. |
Which game should you play?
Choose Wordle for a focused deduction puzzle
Wordle is the clearest choice if you want a single target and a fixed attempt limit. Its five-letter answer and six guesses make the challenge easy to understand before you start.
Choose Connections for themes and associations
Connections shifts attention away from spelling a hidden answer. You look for a relationship that links words into categories, making it a better match for players who enjoy sorting, lateral thinking, and noticing patterns.
Choose Spelling Bee to make words from letters
Spelling Bee is the word-building option. Its center-letter requirement gives the letter set a constraint, while the editor-curated daily list defines which words count.

What else is in the daily puzzle lineup?
If none of these formats fits, The New York Times Games app listing also includes Strands, Sudoku, crosswords, Pips, Tiles, Letter Boxed, and other games. The formats vary beyond word guessing: Sudoku is number-based, while the lineup’s other titles offer their own puzzle mechanics. See the New York Times Games page for the current selection.
