When Word shows “Product Activation Failed” or “Unlicensed Product,” first check which Microsoft account owns the license, whether that license is still active, and whether multiple Office versions are installed. The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Follow the steps below in order, and use the branch for your Office version and device.
1. Confirm you’re signed in with the account that has the license
In Word, check the account shown in the app and sign out if it is not the one used to buy, redeem, or receive Office. Sign in with the correct personal, work, or school account. These accounts are not interchangeable: a valid license can appear missing if Word is signed in to a different one.
For a personal Microsoft account, check Services & subscriptions and look for the Office product or Microsoft 365 subscription. If nothing appears, try the other Microsoft accounts you may have used to purchase or redeem it. Microsoft’s activation guidance also recommends confirming the account associated with the product: Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office.

2. Check whether more than one Office version is installed
Two Office installations can conflict during activation. On Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label can vary by Windows version) and look for duplicate or older Office entries. Before uninstalling anything, verify which version you need and that you can reinstall or access it. Remove only the unused copy, restart the computer, then open Word and check activation again. Microsoft lists duplicate installations as a possible activation cause in its Office activation troubleshooting.

3. Verify that the subscription or license is active
Return to the account’s Services & subscriptions page and check the status and renewal information. If a Microsoft 365 subscription has expired, Microsoft says it must be renewed for continued use of the subscription version. A computer with Office preinstalled does not necessarily include a paid license; check whether you were offered a trial or need to activate a separate license. If you recently bought a new, unused retail product key specifically to renew an expired subscription, redeem it through the account associated with the subscription. Do not assume a new key is needed for every activation error; check the existing account and license first. Microsoft explains the renewal and key routes in its Microsoft 365 renewal instructions.

4. Use troubleshooting for your Office version and device
Windows with Microsoft 365
After confirming the account and subscription, use Microsoft’s Windows activation troubleshooter from its activation and unlicensed-product page. Follow the prompts for the Microsoft 365 installation showing the error. The troubleshooter is for supported Windows scenarios; it is not a Mac procedure.

Use the version-specific section of Microsoft’s Office activation guidance, rather than assuming the Microsoft 365 steps apply. Check that the account used to activate the installed edition is the one associated with that Office license.

Mac
In Word for Mac, sign in with the account that owns the Office license, then verify that the account actually has an Office product or subscription. If the right account is signed in but activation still fails, follow Microsoft’s Mac-specific sign-in and credential guidance: Activate Office for Mac. Do not run Windows activation tools or Windows registry procedures on a Mac.
5. Follow the specific product-key error, if Word mentions a key
A key that has already been redeemed cannot be used again as a fresh activation key; manage the associated product through the Microsoft account where it was redeemed. Other key errors can have different causes, including an incorrect, blocked, region-mismatched, or work-or-school key. Use the exact message and Microsoft’s product-key error guidance to choose the right redemption or support route. Check the key and linked account before buying another one.

6. If this is a work or school device, ask IT before changing licensing
Managed Office installations can use organization-specific activation. Contact your organization’s IT administrator before removing licenses, clearing credentials, or changing registry settings. Microsoft Learn documents commands such as cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus and additional license-reset procedures for enterprise administrators; these are not routine consumer fixes: Reset Microsoft 365 Apps activation state.

If you need Word while sorting out the license
Microsoft says reduced-functionality desktop Office may still open and print existing documents when a subscription is not active, but creating and editing are disabled. You can also use Office on the web as an alternative to renewing, with the features available there. Microsoft notes that after an extended time offline, subscription verification may fail—usually around 30 days—so reconnecting to the internet can allow the subscription status to be checked.
