You can run a WooCommerce promotion without changing a product’s stored regular or sale price, but it is a custom promotion—not WooCommerce’s native scheduled sale-price feature. The key design choice is where the discount is calculated and displayed: only in the cart, or consistently across product pages, checkout, orders, and connected systems. The available implementation details do not establish the code or tested versions behind the first-person title, so this guide explains the verified WooCommerce behavior and the checks a price-preserving build needs.
How WooCommerce’s native sale pricing works
WooCommerce’s standard product-editor workflow stores a sale price on the product and can schedule when that sale starts and ends. For variable products, prices are set at the variation level. The REST API makes the distinction between stored sale fields and the current customer-facing price explicit: regular_price and sale_price are editable fields, while price and on_sale are read-only response fields. A promotion that must leave the product’s stored prices unchanged therefore needs to be evaluated separately; it should not be described as a native WooCommerce sale price. The Store API provides customer-facing product data, and its product collections support filtering by on_sale. A price-preserving promotion needs a deliberate catalog and API presentation plan: a cart discount does not automatically make a product appear as natively on sale. What a price-preserving flash sale needs to define
A sound approach is to keep the product’s regular and sale-price fields untouched and evaluate a separate promotion rule at the point where the customer sees or receives the discount. WooCommerce documents a Store API filter for adding supplemental data to cart items, but that extension point alone does not establish a complete pricing strategy or guarantee that every store surface uses the same amount. - Product and category pages: Decide whether the discount is shown there, only in the cart, or through a custom-rendered promotion. Make the displayed amount and terms clear.
- Cart and checkout: Verify that the amount due reflects the promotion and that the same rule applies through checkout.
- Orders and customer communications: Check the recorded order amounts and the totals shown in emails and other order views.
- Taxes, refunds, and integrations: Verify how taxes and refunds are calculated and whether connected systems or feeds receive the intended prices. Do not infer consistency from a cart display alone.
- Product types and quantities: Test eligible variations, quantities, and any limits the promotion is meant to enforce.
- Timing and caching: Define the store-timezone interpretation of start and end times, then check whether page or object caches and API responses show the right state as the promotion changes.
These are verification requirements, not behavior guaranteed by the documented cart-item data filter. The exact pricing mechanism, tax treatment, coupon interaction, scheduling method, cache invalidation, and compatibility with a particular theme or extension depend on the actual implementation.

Inventory tracking, backorders, and quantity limits are distinct from price logic. WooCommerce’s product settings include stock controls and a “sold individually” option, but sold individually does not prevent a customer from placing repeated orders. If a flash sale needs a per-order or per-customer cap, define and verify that rule separately from the discount calculation. WooCommerce: Managing Products

When a recurring-sale extension may fit

A first-person implementation account should identify the actual code path and tested environment rather than imply that a generic Store API extension point is the whole system. Record the WooCommerce and WordPress versions, product types, theme and relevant integrations tested, and how the promotion is represented in catalog, cart, checkout, order, and downstream views. Official documentation establishes WooCommerce’s native sale fields and relevant Store API capabilities, but it does not establish which hooks, pricing strategy, or compatibility results a particular build used.
