On October 2, 2026, West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari told minority voters in Nandigram that they did not have to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and could say “Bharat Mata ki Jai” instead. He made the appeal while campaigning for the October 6 assembly by-election, presenting support for the BJP as a chance for friendship and partnership in development work.
What Adhikari said to minority voters
At Birulia Bazar in Nandigram II, Adhikari said: “Yes, we chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’, but we don’t force you to do it. You can choose not to and just say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’.” Hindustan Times published the quotation, attributing it to PTI; India Today and The New Indian Express reported the same central message, with minor differences in spelling and punctuation.
The offer was framed as political outreach rather than a change in BJP policy. Adhikari also urged voters to “Make friendship, we will walk together; you will also be a partner in the development work,” according to Hindustan Times, which places those remarks at Debipur.
Why he was campaigning in Nandigram
Adhikari was campaigning for BJP candidate Hasirani Rath. The seat was holding a by-election after Adhikari resigned from Nandigram: he had won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the April 2026 assembly election. The reports identify Rath as the mother of Chandranath Rath, Adhikari’s former aide, who was killed on May 6, 2026.

The campaign was sharply contested. Adhikari said the Trinamool Congress (TMC) had “ceased to exist” and made claims about political rivals, government work, recruitment and the investigation into Rath’s killing. Those are statements and allegations reported from his campaign speech, not independently established findings. He also claimed that his government had published a merit list for 12,000 police constables and promised one lakh appointments within a year; the cited coverage does not independently verify those outcomes.
