This is a source-based recommendation, not a universal claim about speed or visual fidelity.
How the rendering approaches differ
wkhtmltopdf is a command-line HTML-to-PDF tool built on Qt WebKit. Its project status page discusses the age and deprecation of that rendering lineage and cautions about dynamic JavaScript sites. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library that provides a high-level automation API for Chrome and Firefox; its documented uses include generating PDFs, navigating pages, and interacting with complex interfaces.
The wkhtmltopdf maintainer advises: “If you’re using it to convert a site which uses dynamic JS, consider using puppeteer or one of the many wrappers it has.” That guidance makes Puppeteer the safer initial choice when the PDF depends on client-side application behavior. It does not establish that Puppeteer will produce a better result for every page or deployment.

Print CSS and PDF layout behavior
Puppeteer uses print media by default
Puppeteer’s page.pdf() generates a PDF using the print CSS media type. If the intended output should use screen styles, set await page.emulateMediaType('screen') before calling page.pdf(). The documentation also says colors are modified for printing by default; use CSS -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact color treatment is required, then inspect the actual PDF.

wkhtmltopdf lets you select media behavior
The wkhtmltopdf manual documents --print-media-type, with screen media as its documented default. If a site has separate @media print rules, test with the intended setting: changing media can affect visibility, layout, colors, and pagination.
Match options to the document
wkhtmltopdf documents headers and footers, margins, page controls, outlines, and tables of contents. Puppeteer’s PDF options document paper format or dimensions, orientation, margins, header/footer templates, CSS @page size preference, background graphics, scale, page ranges, outline generation, a timeout, and waiting for fonts. These options offer control, not a guarantee that arbitrary content will paginate correctly. Test long tables, page breaks, headers, and footers with representative pages.
Runnable Puppeteer example
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. The following example navigates to a page, waits for its load event and fonts, then writes a PDF using print styles. Supply a page-specific readiness condition if important content loads later than the initial navigation.

})();networkidle0 is one possible navigation condition, not proof that every application-specific component has finished rendering. Pages with persistent network activity or delayed client-side content may require waiting for a selector or another application-specific signal before printing.

wkhtmltopdf command-line example
For a controlled page, a basic command can select print media and save the result. Add the options needed by your template, and confirm that the installed build supports the expected behavior.
wkhtmltopdf --print-media-type https://example.com page.pdfThe manual also documents options for enabling or disabling JavaScript, delaying capture, waiting for a specified window.status value, setting headers and footers, generating outlines, and adding a table of contents. A delay is a timing workaround, not a reliable substitute for a meaningful readiness condition.
When each tool makes sense
Start with Puppeteer when
- The page depends on client-side JavaScript, application state, or browser interaction before its content is complete.
- You need to control navigation and readiness as part of a larger Node.js workflow.
- Your output depends on browser print behavior or CSS page-size settings.
Consider wkhtmltopdf when
- You have stable, controlled HTML templates and an existing command-line pipeline.
- Its documented layout controls meet your needs and the installed build behaves consistently in your environment.
- You have reviewed its deployment dependencies and can ensure the input is trusted and sanitized.
Security and deployment considerations
Do not feed untrusted HTML to wkhtmltopdf
The wkhtmltopdf project states: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML” and advises sanitizing user-provided HTML and JavaScript. Treat this as an explicit project warning when designing a server-side converter that accepts outside input.
Check the actual wkhtmltopdf build
The official downloads page lists 0.12.6 as the stable series, released June 11, 2020. It warns that distribution builds may differ in Qt patches and feature behavior. It also notes that “static” builds still depend on system packages, with libraries, libc, fontconfig, and FreeType affecting deployment. Test the exact package and operating-system image that will run the conversion rather than assuming all builds are interchangeable.

Plan Puppeteer around its browser runtime
Puppeteer gives your application browser automation and PDF generation, but the API documentation alone does not settle which browser build, operating-system packages, fonts, or security-update process your deployment uses. Pin and validate the runtime choices appropriate to your environment, and recheck output when those components change.
How to evaluate both tools fairly
No universal performance or visual-fidelity ranking follows from the documented capabilities. Run a small evaluation against the same pages and deployment conditions before committing.
- Choose representative pages. Include a static page, a JavaScript-heavy page, long content, and pages with tables or complex layouts.
- Define when content is ready. Include delayed content and identify a selector or application signal that indicates it is present. Do not treat an arbitrary wait as proof of completion.
- Compare media and typography. Check print-specific CSS, custom fonts, backgrounds, colors, and whether font loading finishes before rendering.
- Inspect pagination and document furniture. Compare page breaks, margins, headers and footers, paper size, and any required outline or table of contents.
- Measure your deployment. Record runtime, memory use, output size, and repeatability on the operating system or container you intend to use. These are measurements for your workload, not conclusions established by the tool documentation.
- Re-test after changes. Recheck representative PDFs after changing the renderer, browser, system libraries, fonts, or template CSS.
Troubleshooting common PDF problems
The PDF is missing content rendered by JavaScript
First check whether the page content appears after the navigation event. In Puppeteer, wait for a meaningful selector or application-specific completion signal before printing. In wkhtmltopdf, the manual documents JavaScript controls, a delay, and a window.status wait; these mechanisms do not guarantee compatibility with a modern application.
The PDF looks unlike the browser page
Check which media type was used and whether the page’s print CSS changes visibility or layout. Puppeteer uses print media for page.pdf() unless you emulate screen media first; wkhtmltopdf documents screen media as its default and offers --print-media-type.

Colors or backgrounds are missing
For Puppeteer, background graphics are an explicit PDF option, and print color adjustment can affect color output. Check the page’s print CSS and the PDF settings together. For either renderer, inspect the final document rather than relying on the screen rendering.
Fonts or page breaks differ between environments
Wait for fonts before generating a Puppeteer PDF and verify that the deployment has the required fonts installed. For wkhtmltopdf, account for the documented fontconfig and FreeType dependencies. Test long content and page breaks on the exact production package and system image.
wkhtmltopdf behaves differently across machines
Compare the package source and build, Qt patches, system libraries, libc, fontconfig, and FreeType. The official project documentation warns that packaging affects behavior, including for builds described as static.
