An “SSL error” from wkhtmltopdf is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First identify the exact URL that failed—main page, redirect target, or a CSS, image, font, script, or iframe—and capture the complete error output. Then test that host’s TLS connection independently. The fix depends on which request failed; wkhtmltopdf’s certificate flags are for client-certificate authentication, not a general way to accept invalid server certificates or upgrade an older renderer’s TLS support.
Start by identifying what failed
Record the complete standard error output, the exact input URL, the operating system and package source, and the output of wkhtmltopdf --version. Note whether the binary is a patched-Qt build if you know. Binaries sharing a version label can differ by build and packaging, so the version string alone may not explain the behavior.
Determine whether the error refers to the main document, a redirect destination, or a dependent resource. A page can load while its HTTPS stylesheet or image fails, leaving an incomplete PDF. A browser opening the page successfully does not prove that wkhtmltopdf can fetch every same-origin or third-party resource.
These distinctions matter in historical reports: a wkhtmltopdf 0.12.4 report described HTTPS stylesheets and images failing while HTTP equivalents worked, while an archived report involving 0.12.6 with patched Qt on Ubuntu Focal described an SSL warning followed by a 403 and ContentOperationNotPermittedError. These are examples, not proof of a universal cause or a safe reason to switch resources to HTTP. Issue #4462 and issue #4897.

Test the HTTPS endpoint outside wkhtmltopdf
Use the OpenSSL diagnostic client to inspect a connection to the host named in the error. Replace example.com with that host:
openssl s_client -connect example.com:443 -servername example.comThe -servername value sends the hostname for servers that select certificates using SNI. Read the handshake and certificate-verification output for evidence of a connection or trust-chain problem; a successful connection here does not prove the renderer can retrieve the page or its assets. OpenSSL documents s_client as a tool for establishing and inspecting SSL/TLS connections, and handshake failures can have multiple causes: OpenSSL s_client.

Also check whether the failed request resolves to the expected host, whether a redirect leads elsewhere, and whether a proxy or network access rule changes the route. Review proxy environment variables and any proxy configured for wkhtmltopdf; the command-line reference includes proxy options. Verify the endpoint’s certificate chain and access controls, then test the specific failing asset URL rather than only the page URL.
Choose a fix for the actual cause
The server requires a client certificate
If the remote server uses mutual TLS and expects a client certificate, wkhtmltopdf documents --ssl-crt-path and --ssl-key-path. The certificate path can include intermediate CA and trusted certificates. The usage reference describes --ssl-crt-path as “Path to the ssl client cert public key in OpenSSL PEM format, optionally followed by intermediate ca and trusted certs”. These options provide client credentials; they are not switches for bypassing server-certificate verification or enabling TLS features missing from a renderer build. A redirect, proxy, network rule, or access control blocks the request
Follow the redirect chain and inspect the final URL that wkhtmltopdf tries to load. Confirm that the rendering host can reach that destination, and check proxy configuration and server-side restrictions. An SSL warning followed by an HTTP 403, as in the historical issue report above, points to more than a TLS handshake alone; the response status and requested URL are essential diagnostic details.
A dependent HTTPS asset fails
Test the exact CSS, image, font, script, or iframe URL reported in stderr. Check its host’s certificate chain, redirects, network accessibility, and access rules. Replacing HTTPS with HTTP is not a general fix: it may expose content in transit and does not establish that the resource will work reliably.

The renderer and server cannot negotiate TLS safely
If the endpoint’s TLS behavior is incompatible with the rendering binary and neither the endpoint nor a safe deployment setting can be changed, test a different renderer against the actual document. Do not treat disabling certificate verification as a routine remedy; it weakens protection without resolving other possible causes of a failed load.

The --load-error-handling option controls what wkhtmltopdf does after a page load fails: the documented behaviors are abort, ignore, and skip. It changes failure handling, not the TLS handshake. Ignoring or skipping an error can produce a PDF with missing content, so use these modes only when that incomplete output is acceptable and checked. Consult the usage reference for the option’s exact behavior for your invocation.

When a different rendering tool makes sense
The wkhtmltopdf project status page points to WeasyPrint or commercial Prince for controlled report generation, and Puppeteer or a wrapper for pages that require dynamic JavaScript. Those are candidates to evaluate, not guaranteed HTTPS fixes: compare TLS behavior with the target endpoints, JavaScript requirements, output fidelity, deployment dependencies, maintenance, and licensing. The same status page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat HTML and JavaScript supplied by users as a security boundary: sanitize input and isolate the rendering process. The status page is old, so check the current maintenance status and versions of candidate alternatives before adopting one.
